Mercury is a toxic environmental contaminant that is known to undergo long range transport, resulting in deposition in remote and pristine ecosystems. Increases in methylmercury concentration at low trophic levels may result in greater risk to top predators in food webs. As a result, low trophic level invertebrates are important sentinels for ecosystem contamination and overall ecosystem health. Big Meadow Bog, located on Brier Island, Nova Scotia, is a disturbed wetland habitat that was subject to colonization by herring gulls (Larus argentatus), resulting in significant phosphate nutrient in

Human biomonitoring of mercury (Hg) exposure commonly relies on blood and hair measurements, often assuming a stable conversion ratio between these matrices. However, this assumption neglects dynamic toxicokinetic processes governing Hg distribution and elimination. Here, we characterized the distribution, determinants, and toxicokinetic implications of the hair-to-blood total Hg ratio in 453 individuals from Amazonian riverine communities chronically exposed to methylmercury (MeHg). Total Hg (THg) was determined in blood and hair, Hg speciation in hair by LC-ICP-MS, and selenium (Se) in blood

Mercury sulfide nanoparticles (HgSNPs) are widespread yet poorly understood Hg species in contaminated areas. Here, we present a 2.5-year simulated experiment tracking the persistence, transformation, and bioavailability of HgSNPs relative to larger HgS forms in soil-rice systems. We demonstrate that HgSNPs persist in soils with minimal physicochemical change but exhibit high methylation potential and rice uptake. Soil amended with HgSNPs yielded 13- to 26-fold higher methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations than bulk HgS treatments, resulting in 14- to 92-fold and 5.6- to 68-fold increases in MeHg

Mercury ions (Hg2+) pose serious threats to human health owing to their toxicity and bioaccumulative properties, requiring timely and accurate in-field monitoring. Although laboratory-based analytical techniques can offer excellent detection performance, they need expensive instrumentation and professional operators, making them unsuitable for on-site self-detection; existing portable optical approaches still rely on manual operation, inevitably introducing underestimated biases arising from operators' subjectivity and hardly meeting the demand for reliable monitoring. To fill this gap, here w

Heavy metal ions trigger hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) outbreak and sustained toxic damage, but current H2O2 fluorescent probes still suffer from critical limitations in revealing long-term oxidative stress under cadmium ion (Cd2+) and mercury ion (Hg2+) co-exposure, and are limited by narrow Stokes shift and insufficient sensitivity. Herein, an original donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) push-pull electron transferring fluorescent probe, TQ-H2O2, was designed for clarifying the vague relationship between Cd2+/Hg2+-triggered up-regulated H2O2 overproduction, oxidative imbalance and cellular damage. A significant fraction of atmospheric mercury enters the aquatic and terrestrial environments via the deposition of gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM). The photochemically produced GOM comprises many molecules, but most experimental work employs HgCl2 and HgBr2 as surrogates. This calls for a more realistic representation of GOM for the development of detection and sampling methods. Here, several mixed mercuric compounds XHgY (X and Y are Cl-, Br-, I-, NO2 -, and NO3 -) were synthesized by exchange reactions involving mercuric and nonmercuric compounds, isolated in crystalline form, and characteri

Oxidative stress plays a central role in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and is strongly influenced by environmental toxicants such as heavy metals. Mercury (Hg) is a well-known pro-oxidant agent capable of disrupting cellular redox homeostasis, promoting reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and inducing structural and functional alterations in circulating blood cells. In particular, erythrocytes (RBC) are highly susceptible to oxidative damage due to their continuous exposure to oxygen and limited antioxidant repair mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the protect

In this study, probe 1, a novel mitochondria-targeted fluorescent probe for the colorimetric and ratiometric detection of Hg2+, was developed. Upon addition of Hg2+ to the solution of 1, distinct spectral changes were observed. The absorption spectra underwent a blue shift from 510 nm to 450 nm (Δλ = 60 nm), and the solution color changed from red to pale yellow under daylight. Concurrently, a significant blue shift occurred from 645 nm to 540 nm (Δλ = 105 nm) in the fluorescence spectra. There were remarkable variations in the fluorescence intensity ratio of F540 nm/F645 nm with the R/R0 valu

Heavy metals like lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury and chromium are persistent environmental contaminants recognised for their harmful effects on human health. Among their various toxicological effects, recent studies have identified endoplasmic reticulum (ER) as a critical target of HM-induced cellular damage. This review explores the contribution of HMs in disrupting ER homeostasis, with a particular focus on ER dysfunctions, ER stress mechanisms, calcium regulation, and ER-mitochondria crosstalk. ER stress occurs when its protein-folding capacity is exceeded, activating the unfolded protein

This study explores the use of advanced synchrotron radiation (SR)-based imaging and spectroscopic techniques to investigate the distribution and nature of mercury (Hg) in numismatic artifacts, with a particular focus on its role in historical counterfeiting practices. A selection of medieval silver coins exhibiting anomalous surface Hg signals, initially identified through portable energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, were further examined using high-resolution synchrotron X-ray micro-computed tomography (SR-µCT), micro-X-ray spectroscopy (SR

Slaughterhouse waste is a major source of environmental pollution. However, its rich organic content holds considerable potential for enhancing soil fertility. Herein, slaughterhouses meat waste was used to produce organic fertilizer (OF), and its effect on sugarcane growth, productivity and soil fertility were evaluated. The decomposition of the collected meat waste was carried out in a controlled fermentation pit. Initially, the sample was treated by sulfuric acid (H2SO4), followed by the addition of potassium hydroxide (KOH) and dipotassium phosphate (K2HPO4). The pH of the medium was then

Mercury is one of the most toxic heavy metal, posing severe threats to environmental safety and human health due to its persistence, bioaccumulation, and detrimental neurological and systemic effects. Therefore, the development of fast, sensitive, selective, and on-site detection methods for Hg2+ remains an urgent priority. Herein, we present a phenylthiourea-derived indoline-fused chromenylium-cyanine chemodosimeter (INIR2), engineered as a "turn-on" near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent and colorimetric probe for Hg2+ recognition. Upon coordination with Hg2+, INIR2 undergoes a specific chemical tr

Approximately 50% of global lakes experience seasonal ice cover for an average of 217.5 days per year, a period that has traditionally been regarded as an ecological "dormant phase". During this period, lake ice regulates light availability, thermal structure, gas exchange, redox conditions, and hydrodynamic processes, all of which can influence mercury (Hg) speciation, transport, and transformation. However, most Hg biogeochemistry studies have focused on the open-water period, leaving Hg cycling during the ice-covered period insufficiently understood. To address this knowledge gap, six repre

Simultaneous detection of biologically relevant thiols and toxic heavy metal ions is important for biomedical analysis, food safety, and environmental monitoring. Cysteine (Cys) is a key sulfur-containing amino acid involved in redox regulation, whereas mercury(II) (Hg2⁺) is a highly toxic pollutant that binds strongly to thiol groups. This Hg2⁺-thiol interaction provides a chemical basis for sequential Cys/Hg2⁺ sensing. However, many nanozyme-based optical assays rely on H₂O₂-dependent peroxidase-like activity, and the instability of H₂O₂ can compromise assay reproducibility and practical use

Mercury (Hg), and specifically methylmercury (MeHg), is a contaminant of global concern to humans and wildlife, but there is still limited understanding of its effects on many taxa. Amphibians are closely associated with water, where Hg is converted to MeHg, and high concentrations of MeHg can reduce survival of amphibians in the wild. However, limited non-lethal proxies exist for estimating MeHg bioaccumulation in amphibian larvae, which could be used to reduce destructive sampling and allow sampling of imperiled species. We evaluated whether tail clips were indicative of whole-body MeHg conc

Silicon carbide (SiC) nanowires with rhombohedral structure, length of longer than 20 μm and diameter of less than 100 nm, respectively were prepared under Ar atmosphere at 1250 ℃ for 180 min using rice husk as the raw materials. The band gap of the rice husk-derived SiC nanowires (RH-SiC) is 2.05 eV and RH-SiC can be utilized as visible-light photocatalysts for organic pollutants removal. For rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) removal using 25 mg RH-SiC, 20 mL RhB and MB solution (0.01 g·L-1) can be removed with solar light irradiation for 40 min and 55 min, respectively. Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxic pollutant threatening aquatic ecosystems and human health. Photodegradation is a key abiotic pathway for MeHg elimination in aquatic systems, yet its underlying mechanisms and controlling factors remain poorly understood. We investigated MeHg photodegradation in the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) under varying light conditions and iron ion concentrations. Our results demonstrate that the indirect pathway, mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS), significantly contributes to MeHg degradation but yields negligible mass-independent fractionation

Reactive mercury (RM) has a short atmospheric residence time of hours to weeks, leading to primarily local deposition. Gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) has a residence time of 0.3-1 year, resulting in long-range transport. The Reactive Mercury Active System (RMAS) developed by the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is a membrane-based Hg-monitoring system. This study presents the first independent evaluation of RMAS outside the UNR group, focusing on its performance in polluted environments. The impacts of key factors on the accuracy of RMAS and the deconvolution method for thermal desorption pro

The precise monitoring of Hg2+ and norfloxacin (NOR) residues is essential for ensuring food safety and environmental health. This study describes the fabrication of a dual-emissive CQDs@Eu-UiO-66 hybrid, synthesized via the in-situ encapsulation of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) within a Eu3+-doped UiO-66 framework. By leveraging the blue emission of CQDs and the red emission of Eu3+, this ratiometric platform facilitates the ultrasensitive, discrete detection of Hg2+ and NOR, yielding LODs of 2.08 nM and 48.96 nM, respectively. Mechanistic investigations reveal that Hg2+ quenching proceeds via p

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is increasingly recognized as a systemic condition characterized by intricate endocrine and metabolic dysregulation. Emerging evidence suggests that environmental contaminants may drive its pathogenesis, supporting an expanded conceptualization of the disorder as polycystic metabolic-ovarian syndrome (PMOS). This systematic review aimed to evaluate the association between exposure to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and endocrine disruptors and the reproductive, hormonal, and metabolic clinical features of PCOS.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guideline
