The alkaline-earth elements (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) strongly favor the formation of diamagnetic compounds in the +2 oxidation state. Herein we report a paramagnetic beryllium radical cation, [(CAAC)2Be]+• (2) [CAAC = cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene], prepared by oxidation of a zero-valent beryllium complex with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl (TEMPO). Compound 2 was characterized by EPR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, X-ray crystallography, and DFT calculations. Notably, the isolation of 2 represents the first s-block charged radical and the first crystalline beryllium radical.

NEt3 adducts to BeCl2, BeBr2 and BeI2 were synthesized and characterised via NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as X-ray diffractometry. Depending on the halide and the state of matter these are either mono- or dinuclear. Population analyses were performed to determine the influence of the metal's partial charge on the coordination geometry. Additionally, the reactivity of these compounds towards C-Cl- and O-H-bonds was studied.

We develop relativistic short-range exchange energy functionals for four-component relativistic range-separated density-functional theory using a Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian in the no-pair approximation. In the present density functional theory (DFT) research, nine different molecules, each with different combinations of A (triel) and E (divalent metal) elements, were reacted to effect methane C-H activation. The inhalation of beryllium and its compounds can cause the development of chronic beryllium disease in susceptible individuals. This is caused by a distinct autoimmune process. Here, beryllium coordination compounds with biomimetic ligands are discussed, which are used to understand the coordination of Be2+ in the body and its effect on biomolecules. The advances in the development of precursors for the directed synthesis of these coordination complexes are presented as well as the potential use of non-aqueous solvents for these investigations.

Isolated Be2 is a typical example of a weakly bound system, but interaction with other systems may give rise to surprising bonding features. Designing deep-ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear-optical (NLO) crystals is one of the major current research interests, but it faces a great challenge. The atmospheric deposition of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) is considered a major pathway to isolated lakes and bogs in the Athabasca oil sands region (AOSR), Canada.
