Effect of hydrotreating on the pyrolysis oil composition: GC-MS studies.

The processing of waste tires is a significant challenge. The pyrolysis of waste tires offers a sustainable pathway to produce fuels, addressing both waste management and energy recovery challenges. However, due to the presence of a large amount of unsaturated, aromatic hydrocarbons and sulfur compounds, their direct use as fuel is not possible. Catalysts based on Pd, Pt, and other metals are commonly used for the hydrotreating of pyrolysis oil for producing alternative transportation fuels. The effect of hydrotreating with the commercial Pt/Al2O3 and NiMo/Al2O3 catalysts on the chemical compo

Acid Resistant and Highly Silver Selective Membranes Based on Charged Nanoporous 2D-Materials.

The amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is growing rapidly, yet less than a quarter of it is recycled. These "urban mines" contain valuable and critical metals that must be recovered. Therefore, developing more sustainable and energy-efficient separation techniques is essential. Membrane technology has demonstrated this capability, particularly those based on 2D materials, due to their atomic thickness and the ability to precisely tune pore size. This report introduces a novel nanofiltration membrane fabricated from charged, fully exfoliated, nanoporous 2D nanosheets. De

Facet-dependent Antimony Isotope Fractionation during Sb(V) Adsorption on Hematite.

The widely distributed hematite in soil and water environments can affect the environmental fate of antimony (Sb) through adsorption, yet little is known about the role played by various hematite facets in Sb isotopic fractionation. This study investigated the Sb(V) adsorption mechanism on the (001) and (012) facets of hematite and the associated isotope fractionation mechanism, combining batch adsorption experiments, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results indicate that the adsorption capacity of the (012) facet is strong

Toenail metal concentrations and kidney health among young people at risk of chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology.

BACKGROUND: Metal exposure is a hypothesized risk factor for chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology, an ongoing epidemic in Central America, yet metal biomonitoring data in this region are scant. METHODS: We measured metal toenail concentrations using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and calculated estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in a cohort of Nicaraguans 14-31 years (n = 297; 49% female; data collected in 2023). We used multivariable linear and ordinal regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression to examine individual element and mixture associations of ar

Metals and Metalloids Accumulation and Biomagnification in Three Commercially Important Fishes from a Turkish Brackish Lake.

Metal and metalloid (hereafter simply 'metal') pollution is a growing global concern for both aquatic organisms and human health. Fishes are important in human diet, but they can also accumulate metals in their tissues. Therefore, it is important to monitor the concentration of metals in their muscle, and to investigate potential patterns of bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Here, we studied the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) in three economically important fish species from Dalyan Lake (Türkiye): the grey mullet Mugil cephal

Effect of different leaching agents on the recycling of valuable metals in spent molybdenum-based catalyst.

Conventional hydrometallurgical recycling of spent molybdenum-based catalysts is often constrained by a trade-off between selectivity and total metal recovery when using single-step alkaline or acidic leaching. To overcome this limitation, this work presents a novel two-stage leaching process designed for the sequential and selective extraction of valuable metals. The approach leverages an initial alkaline leach (NaOH) to selectively dissolve molybdenum and silicon, achieving extraction efficiencies of 95.8% for Mo and 58.1% for Si while minimizing co-dissolution of other metals. The resulting

Changes in contaminant bioaccumulation and biochemical responses of Carcinus maenas in response to ecosystem restoration measures.

An environmental restoration programme based on Zostera noltii transplantation aimed to rehabilitate a historically multi-metal contaminated estuarine system. This study evaluates early responses of the crab Carcinus maenas during the first two years following seagrass transplantation (2021-2022), by combining tissue mercury burdens and biochemical biomarkers. Although several potentially toxic metals co-occur in the system, sediment quality guideline screening (Probable Effect Levels) identified mercury as the only element exceeding effect-based thresholds; therefore, results are interpreted

Heavy Metal Pollution and Assessment of the Bioaccumulation Potential of Earthworms from the Soil of Punjab, Pakistan.

Earthworms are widely used as biological indicators of soil contamination and are often referred to as the 'intestine of the soil'; however, their effectiveness can vary across regions and environmental conditions. The performance of earthworms as indicators of soil pollution may vary among regions, and there is a need to assess their reliability under specific environmental conditions. So, in this study, soil and earthworm samples were collected from 19 locations across Punjab, Pakistan, to assess heavy metal pollution and bioaccumulation using geoaccumulation indices (Igeo) and bioaccumulati

Preferential Formation and Stability of Copper Porphyrins amidst Other Metals in Dilute Aqueous Solution─Applications for Radiopharmaceuticals.

Two worlds exist for cupration of a ligand: the preparative lab where natural-abundance copper (in pure form) is typically used in excess versus the ligand, and the radiochemistry lab where the ligand is in great excess versus the copper radionuclide (unavoidably accompanied by contaminating metal ions). Here, seven synthetic free base water-soluble porphyrins have been examined to assess molecular designs suitable for targeted radiotheranostics. Studies were carried out with equimolar quantities of a porphyrin and natural abundance (nonradioactive) CuCl2 (10-4-10-7 M) and other metals in aque

Synthesis and Pharmacological Evaluation of Novel 1,5-Disubstituted-3-amino-1,2,4-triazoles Designed as Multitarget Directed Ligands for Alzheimer's Disease Targets.

A series of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole derivatives was synthesized and evaluated for their multitarget activities relevant to Alzheimer's disease. Inhibition assays revealed potent and preferential inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) for most of compounds, with IC50 values of up to 0.38 μM and selectivity ratios up to 32-fold over butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). Qualitative molecular dynamics indicated that interactions at the PAS and CAS appear to occur synergistically, with positive cooperativity. Electron-withdrawing groups in R1 and R2 favorize PAS interactions that seem to guide efficient

The effect of leaching on the joint toxicity of a complex metal mixture to Folsomia candida in relation to bioavailability in soil.

Metal-contaminated soils generally contain mixtures rather than single metals. Laboratory toxicity tests often focus on single metals in soils freshly spiked with soluble metal salts, potentially overestimating bioavailability in field soils. This study determined the toxicity of mixtures of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb dosed as chloride salts to the springtail Folsomia candida in LUFA 2.2 soil that was either left as is after spiking or leached to remove the chloride counterion. Effects on survival, growth, and reproduction were related to total, 0.01 M calcium chloride(CaCl2)-extractable, and water-ex

Triple-Synergistic Therapy with Cobalt-Pheophytin Coordination Micelles for Overcoming Drug Resistance in Pancreatic Cancers.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) represents one of the deadliest malignancies as KRAS (Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog) mutations continuously activate multiple downstream signaling pathways, leading to drug resistance. To overcome this issue, herein, we developed a cobalt-pheophytin (CoPheo) coordination micelle chelating two chemotherapeutic agents including ONC201 and Palbociclib (Pal), yielding CoPheo-ONC201-Pal-F127. Compared with other metals, cobalt exhibits stronger coordination ability and higher drug-loading efficiency. The resulting ligand bonds are both acid- and

Distribution and enrichment of heavy metal in the north of Wharton Basin, Indian Ocean.

Currently, there is no research focusing on heavy metals in deep-sea sediments from the northern part of the Walton Sea Basin in the Indian Ocean. Due to its unique geographical location, this area is ecologically significant to the Western Pacific-Indian Ocean system. Therefore, this study collected nine surface sediment samples from the Christmas Island Seamount Province using the Jiaolong human occupied vehicle (HOV) to investigate and elucidate the spatial distribution, enrichment characteristics, and ecological risks of heavy metals. By testing the concentrations of nine heavy metals (Hg,
