Bio-organic amendment enhances apple yield and nutritional quality in degraded sandy soils.

INTRODUCTION: 'Saiwaihong' apple (Malus pumila 'Saiwaihong') is a premium cultivar cultivated in the Horqin sandy land of Inner Mongolia, where soils are characterized by low organic matter content and poor nutrient retention capacity. Castor bean enzyme biofertilizer (CB), produced through microbial fermentation of castor meal, has shown promise in enhancing crop productivity, but its effects on fruit tree performance and underlying mechanisms remain inadequately characterized. METHODS: A two-year field experiment was conducted using 7-year-old 'Saiwaihong' apple trees in a randomized comple

Polarization reversal and ion-electron co-modulation in in-plane anisotropic AgVP2S6 for multimodal image processing.

The recent emergence of quaternary van der Waals layered transition metal phosphorus chalcogenide compounds, which serve as exemplary ionic-electronic coupled semiconductors, has motivated considerable interest in the development of optically modulated in-sensor computing and refreshable neuromorphic devices. Here, we report monoclinic AgVP2S6 crystals featuring quasi-one-dimensional ordering within well-defined zigzag chains, whose pronounced in-plane optical anisotropy arises from the highly asymmetric distribution of the conduction band minimum and valence band maximum along the a- and b-ax

Allelopathic inhibition of harmful algae by mangrove leaf extracts under contrasting habitats and algal densities.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) increase with intensified coastal eutrophication, underscoring the need for environmentally friendly control strategies. Mangrove-derived allelochemicals can regulate HABs, yet variability among plant and algal species remains unclear. This study compared the allelopathic inhibition of aqueous leaf extracts from three mangrove species (Aegiceras corniculatum, Avicennia marina and Kandelia obovata) on two HAB dinoflagellates, Scrippsiella trochoidea and Alexandrium catenella. Leaves collected from two mangrove wetlands in southern China, Futian (FT) and Dapeng (DP),

Integrated mineralogical, metabolomic, and gene expression analysis of the phosphate-solubilizing mechanism of Pseudomonas sp. PSB-13.

Phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) are pivotal for soil phosphorus (P) cycling and sustainable agriculture. This study aims to screen a high-efficiency PSM and systematically decipher its solubilization mechanisms for tricalcium phosphate (Ca-P), iron phosphate (Fe-P), and aluminum phosphate (Al-P). PSMs were screened on Pikovskaya (PVK) medium with tricalcium phosphate as the sole P source. The highly efficient strain was identified via 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and its ability to solubilize Ca-P, Fe-P, and Al-P was quantified in liquid culture. Mineralogical alterations were charac

Preparation of Magnetic Biochar Derived from Spent Mushroom Substrate and Its Adsorption and Regeneration Performance for NH4+ and PO43.

Nitrogen and phosphorus are the primary pollutants responsible for eutrophication in water bodies, and their effective removal is crucial for water environmental protection. Biochar, owing to its porous structure and surface functional groups, exhibits excellent adsorption performance for nitrogen and phosphorus, which can be significantly enhanced through metal modification. In this study, magnetic biochar (MBC) was prepared from spent mushroom substrate via FeCl3 impregnation and microwave pyrolysis, and its adsorption performance for NH4+ and PO43- was systematically evaluated. The physicoc

Desorption of Phosphate from Iron-Bearing Soil Minerals by a Plant Secondary Metabolite.

In soils, phosphorus readily adsorbs to the surfaces of ubiquitous iron (oxyhydr)oxide minerals, rendering it less accessible to plants and microorganisms. Plants have a number of strategies to access iron, among them the secretion of redox-active metabolites from their roots. Although these strategies likely increase the bioavailability of surface-adsorbed phosphorus through reductive dissolution, their effect on phosphorus cycling has not yet been investigated. We tested the ability of fraxetin, a coumarin-type redox-active metabolite produced by the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and othe

Iron ores with contrasting redox properties drive iron biogeochemical cycling to enhance acesulfame and nutrients removal in constructed wetlands.

Iron minerals have attracted considerable attention for their potential to enhance the removal of nutrients and emerging contaminants within water treatment. However, how the intrinsic redox state of iron in minerals governs pollutant attenuation remains insufficiently understood. In this study, Fe(III) (hematite) and Fe(II) minerals (pyrite) were employed to construct constructed wetlands (CWs) for the simultaneous removal of the artificial sweetener acesulfame (ACE) and nutrients. According to substrate characterization and soluble iron monitoring, the observed elemental changes indicated th

Unraveling the dynamics of organic phosphorus and its role in internal phosphorus feedback during algal blooms senescence.

Algal blooms (ABs) intensify the internal transformation of phosphorus, yet limited understanding of sedimentary organic phosphorus (SPo) and algal Po (APo) has constrained insight into phosphorus feedback in eutrophication. In this study, we comprehensively characterized SPo and APo compositions during an incubation experiment using solution 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR), Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) and complementary techniques. A marked decrease in bioavailable orthophosphate monoester and diester in APo (1223.7 mg/kg, 25.3%), contrasted

Critical re-evaluation of experimental settings with fluorescent probes for bioorthogonal chemistry with palladium antimony inactivation-resistant catalyst.

Bioorthogonal reactions, both in vitro and in vivo, show great promise in fluorescent proteins labelling and for the development of bioorthogonal anticancer therapies. In this work, we focus on palladium-catalysed deprotection chemistry. Despite its potential, many questions remain unanswered. The most critical issues include the long-term stability of the palladium catalysts in biological milieu, the lack of efficient methods of reaction monitoring etc. Herein, we report the design of palladium catalyst containing phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony ligands. The catalytic activity has been eval

Natural variation in antimicrobial activity and composition of the secreted metabolomes of the model moss Ceratodon purpureus.

Bryophytes have recently emerged as potentially promising producers of bioactive metabolites with multiple applications in biomedicine and biotechnology. Our previous studies have established that the model moss Ceratodon purpureus produces novel compounds with potent antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive bacteria. Here, we conducted a comparative analysis of metabolites produced by four different natural isolates of C. purpureus and observed considerable variation in the composition of antibacterial compounds. Next, we partially purified bioactive compounds from extracellular exudate

Leonardite-derived humic substances enhance phosphorus use efficiency in lettuce through integrated physiological and metabolic reprogramming.

Phosphorus (P) is essential for plant growth, and its deficiency significantly limits crop productivity. Plant biostimulants offer a sustainable approach to enhance plant tolerance to nutrient stress and reduce fertilizer use. Among these, humic substances (HS) derived from leonardite show promise, though their physiological effects under P deficiency remain unclear. This study evaluated the impact of a leonardite-derived HS on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown under two P regimes: high P (HP, 1 mM) and low P (LP, 0.2 mM). HS were applied at two concentrations via root (R1: 0.40; R2: 0.60 mL L

The root exudates of wild tomato compared to a modern variety maintain elevated soluble soil phosphorus by interacting with rhizosphere microbiota.

Wild plants are periodically exposed to nutrient flushes, whereas modern cultivars are acclimated to regular nutrition from fertilizers. Phosphorus (P) fertilizers, however, convert into unavailable forms in soil. Here, we assessed plant growth, rhizosphere microbiome, and root exudation of a wild and modern tomato to determine how a wild crop relative responds to a flush of P fertilization. We found that the modern tomato relatively lacked P-mineralizers and grew quickly, depleting soil P. Conversely, wild tomato continued growth and promoted an array of beneficial soil bacteria, resulting in

A promoter indel in GmSTOP1a drives soybean adaptation to low-phosphorus acidic soils in low-latitude regions.

Low phosphorus availability is a major barrier to soybean cultivation in tropical and subtropical regions, where phosphate is strongly fixed by highly weathered acidic soils. However, little is known about the genetic basis of soybean adaptation to such low-phosphorus environments. Here, we identify the major quantitative trait locus Superior Phosphate Acquisition 10 (SPA10), which confers enhanced phosphate-acquisition efficiency in low-latitude soils. SPA10 encodes a soybean homolog of SENSITIVE TO PROTON RHIZOTOXICITY 1 (GmSTOP1a), a transcription factor central to low-phosphorus and proton

Fatty diacid-modified FAP-targeted NIR fluorescent probes with modulated pharmacokinetics for enhanced tumor imaging.

Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes targeting fibroblast activation protein (FAP) have emerged as a promising approach for tumor imaging; however, rapid systemic clearance of small-molecule probes often limits tumor-to-background contrast and narrows the effective imaging window. Here we report a fatty diacid-based albumin-binding strategy to modulate the pharmacokinetics of FAP-targeted NIR fluorescent probes. By incorporating dodecanedioic acid (C12D) or hexadecanedioic acid (C16D) into a sulfo-Cy7-labeled FAP-targeting scaffold through an Ado2-Glu (AG) linker, we evaluated the impact of

Fluorescent boron and phosphorus Co-doped graphene quantum dots for bovine serum albumin sensing in cow's milk with smartphone-enabled real-time readout.

Accurate and rapid detection of milk proteins is important for ensuring dairy quality and assessing nutritional value. However, many conventional analytical techniques involve high operational costs, complicated sample pretreatment, and insufficient sensitivity, especially when applied to complex milk matrices. Among milk proteins, bovine serum albumin (BSA) is widely regarded as a key quality indicator, as its concentration can reflect the physiological condition of dairy animals and may also signal adulteration in milk products. In the present study, we developed a sensitive fluorescence-bas

Acacetin-incorporated lipid nanoparticles for inhaled mRNA vaccines.

Inhaled mRNA vaccines have shown great promise for the prevention of respiratory diseases. However, their broad application is still restricted by lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-induced oxidative stress, rapid clearance of LNPs from the lung, and limited mRNA expression. Here, we show that incorporating a natural compound, acacetin, into the LNP formulation can overcome these delivery barriers and greatly improve inhaled vaccine effectiveness. A natural compound library containing 242 compounds was used in an in vitro screening experiment, and acacetin was identified as the lead compound that substa

Defect-Induced Single-Photon Emission in ZnPS3.

Research on single photon sources in layered materials has been limited so far to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) as hosting platforms. These quantum emitters exhibit advantages due to the distinct semiconducting and insulating characteristics of the two classes of materials, which enable their integration with van der Waals heterostructures and devices. Here, we report single photon emission in ZnPS3, which belongs to the MPX3 family characterized by stronger electronic correlations than those observed intrinsically in TMDs or hBN. We provide a compre

Early cancer biomarker detection using a prism-based multi-resonant Ag/BaTiO₃/BP plasmonic sensor.

Early and precise detection of cancer biomarkers with a ultra low concentration is a critical issue in clinical diagnostics mainly because of limited sensitivity, low selectivity as well as variable workability of the conventional surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors. In order to deal with these drawbacks, this paper suggests a new prism-based, multi-resonant SPR biosensor with an Ag/BaTiO3/Black Phosphorus (BP) heterostructure. The goal is to improve field confinement, responsive refractive index and multiplexing capability to detected cancer biomarkers at an early-stage. The transfer m

Bisphosphane-Stabilized Borylenes: Unlocking Borylene Transfer Reactivities.

The development of borylene-transfer reactions-a powerful yet underdeveloped strategy for the efficient construction of boron-containing compounds-has been hindered by the scarcity of reliable reagents. A fundamental challenge lies in balancing the high ambiphilic reactivity required for transfer with the requisite molecular stability. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of bisphosphane-stabilized borylenes and disclose their exceptional borylene-transfer capabilities. The target borylenes (3) were prepared via facile deprotonation of the corresponding bisphosphane-coordinated hydrobor
