A series of mixed alkoxyalkoxo chloro complexes of vanadium(V), [VOCl2(OCH2CH2OR)]2 (R = Me, Et, iPr, Bz), [VOCl2(OCMe2CH2OMe)]2 and [VOCl2(OCH2(cyclo-C4H7O)]2, were synthesised and characterised. BACKGROUND: Conventional strategies to treat myocardial ischemia include interventions that reduce oxygen demand and/or increase myocardial blood flow. Animal experiments suggest that right-shifting the hemoglobin-oxygen dissociation curve may also attenuate the metabolic consequences of myocardial ischemia. Water samples from two southern California lakes adversely affected by internal nutrient loading were treated with a 20 mg/L dose of Al3+ in laboratory studies to examine Al solubility and solid-phase speciation over time. Alum [Al2(SO4)3 . 18 H2O] applications to water samples from Big Bear Lake and Lake Elsinore resulted in a rapid initial decrease in pH and alkalinity followed by a gradual recovery in pH over several weeks. Effect of five cyclic third components, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, perfluorocyclohexane, perfluoromethylcyclohexane and adamantane, on cyclodextrin-induced room-temperature phosphorescence (CD-RTP) of 1-bromonaphthalene is studied. It is found that these five compounds can induce intensive RTP, and the enhancement order is as follows: cyclohexane>adamantane>methylcyclohexane>perfluorocyclohexane>perfluoromethylcyclohexane. Dependence of RTP intensity on temperature of these systems shows the potential application in developing optical thermometer.

We have characterized commercially available up-converting inorganic lanthanide phosphors for their rare earth composition and photoluminescence properties under infrared laser diode excitation. These up-converting phosphors, in contrast to proprietary materials reported earlier, are readily available to be utilized as particulate reporters in various ligand binding assays after grinding to submicron particle size. The laser power density required at 980 nm to generate anti-Stokes photoluminescence from these particulate reporters is significantly lower than required for two-photon excitation.
