The Simplest Phosphinylperoxy Radical and Its Isomers in the Photochemical Phosphorus-Hydrogen-Oxygen Network.

The oxidation of phosphine (PH3) plays an important role in the photochemical phosphorus-hydrogen-oxygen network of the Earth's atmosphere. The phosphinyl radical (•PH2) is a key intermediate in the photochemistry of PH3, and its reactions with O2 yield phosphorus oxyacids as stable reservoirs via the intermediacy of yet elusive radicals. Herein, we report the identification of the simplest phosphinylperoxy radical H2POO• in gas phase reaction between •PH2 and O2. The characterization of H2POO• with matrix-isolation IR and UV-vis spectroscopy is supported by D- and 18O-isotope labeling experim

Dual cation-anion substitution in phosphorus-based perovskites A3PX3(A = Ca, Sr; X = Cl, F): structural, mechanical, electronic, and optical properties.

We present a comprehensive density functional theory investigation of cubic perovskites A3PX3(A = Ca, Sr; X = Cl, F) to explore the influence of cation-anion substitution on their structural, mechanical, electronic, and optical properties. Structural optimization confirms lattice expansion when substituting Ca with Sr and F with Cl. Electronic band structure calculations reveal direct band gaps at the Γ point, with values 1.85 eV (2.90 eV) for Ca3PF3, 2.06 eV (2.97 eV) for Sr3PF3, 1.96 eV (2.77 eV) for Sr3PCl3, using the PBE (HSE06) functional, respectively. These results demonstrate that subs

Efficacy of phosphonium amphiphilic salts against Acanthamoeba genotype T4.

Acanthamoebae are opportunistic pathogens causing serious human infections, including granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE) and Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). The treatment of those infections is limited and difficult to date. Recent research demonstrated high antimicrobial activity of phosphonium amphiphilic salts. In the present work we aimed to investigate the anti-Acanthamoeba effect of a series of 16 phosphonium salts. The structure of these synthesized cationic amphiphiles was modified in both the polar and nonpolar parts of the surfactant molecule. The compounds have different alkyl ch

ZnPCl7: a compositionally and structurally unprecedented metal-phospho-rus halide.

The synthesis and crystal structure of an unprecedented compound, zinc phospho-rus hepta-chloride or catena-poly[phospho-rus tetra-chloride [[di-chlor-ido-zinc]-μ-chlorido]], ZnPCl7 or {[PCl4][ZnCl3]} n , are reported. The reaction of ZnCl2 with PCl5 in a 1:1 molar ratio at 623 K produced single crystals of ZnPCl7, which crystallizes in the ortho-rhom-bic space group Ama2. The Zn and P atoms lie on crystallographic mirror planes, as do four of the Cl atoms. One Cl atom lies on a twofold axis and one occupies a general position. Its extended structure features isolated [PCl4]+ tetra-hedra and o

Predicting 31P NMR Shifts in Large-Scale, Heterogeneous Databases by Gas Phase DFT: Impact of Conformer and Solvent Effects.

In this study, we extend the Ilm-NMR-P31 data set by systematically enriching experimental 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data with quantum-chemically derived information. Using density functional theory (DFT) at the BLYP and B3LYP levels, we calculated 31P chemical shifts and optimized molecular geometries for 10,007 phosphorus-containing compounds. This hybrid data set provides a consistent framework that combines experimental measurements with theoretical descriptors, thereby facilitating the development of improved machine learning (ML) models and advanced structure elucidation tools

Unraveling the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of odorous compounds and their associated parameters in drinking water reservoirs: A systematic review.

Aesthetic parameters have become integral to drinking water reservoir management, yet the pronounced spatiotemporal heterogeneity of odorants challenges effective control. Current knowledge gaps include comprehensive characterization of seasonal/spatial odorant patterns and their associated factors, hindering evidence-based mitigation strategies. To address these gaps, we systematically analyzed 1005 observations from 22 reservoirs worldwide, quantifying spatiotemporal dynamics of four typical odorants-2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), geosmin (GSM), β-ionone and β-cyclocitral-alongside key environm

Deciphering underexplored rhizosphere processes: root acquisition of citric acid and its metabolic journey in tomato.

Root-exuded organic acids are crucial in mitigating iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies, and their biosynthesis and secretion require significant metabolic investment. Recent studies have shown that roots can also uptake exudates. We hypothesized that citric acid uptake increases under Fe and P deficiencies, declines over time, and contributes to primary metabolism. We investigated citric acid uptake, translocation, and metabolization in Fe- and P-deficient tomato plants grown hydroponically using 13C-labelling with bulk stable-isotope and compound-specific stable-isotope analysis. Battery-grade FePO4 recovery from P-rich urine via field-induced electro-Fenton in a compartmental electrolytic cell.

The recovery of ferric phosphate (FePO4) from wastewater offers a promising application as a valuable precursor in the new energy industry due to the substantial demand for the LiFePO4 battery. However, conventional FePO4 recovery from the massive neutral wastewaters is constrained by pH adjustment and the formation of low-purity precipitation. In this study, a new compartmental electrolytic cell was developed to recover high-purity FePO4 from phosphorus (P)-rich urine via an electric field-induced electro-Fenton process. The membrane-separated induced electro-Fenton (M/I-EF) system enabled th

Perspectives on the application of layered MPX3 materials (M: Transition metal, X: Chalcogen) in confined catalysis and energy applications.

The concept of confined catalysis, where reactions occur within nanoscale environments that modulate reaction energetics, has emerged as a powerful paradigm for designing advanced catalytic systems. Inspired by the efficiency of enzyme active pockets through metal-enzyme cascade reactions, confined architectures provide unique opportunities to enhance activity and selectivity across a wide range of chemical processes. Here, layered transition metal phosphorus trichalcogenides (MPX3, where M: transition metal and X: chalcogen) have attracted increased attention as versatile hosts for confined c

Functional Differences of Glutamine Synthetase Isoenzymes in Wheat Canopy Ammonia Exchange.

Canopy ammonia (NH3) exchange is a major contributor to agricultural NH3 emissions and is closely linked to nitrogen-use efficiency. Glutamine synthetase (GS) mediates plant NH3 assimilation, yet the specific roles of different GS isoenzymes in regulating wheat canopy NH3 exchange remain unclear. This study aimed to clarify the functional differences of wheat TaGS isoenzymes in modulating canopy-atmosphere NH3 exchange dynamics using two wheat cultivars (Yumai 49-198 and Xinong 509) under two nitrogen application levels (120 and 225 kg N ha-1). Field experiments combined with FTIR-based NH3 fl

Gomisin A and metformin co-treatment attenuates diabetic nephropathy and cardiovascular dysfunction by modulating the AGE/RAGE pathway in a diabetic rat model.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a severe complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) that is frequently accompanied by cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The current therapeutic options for DN and CVD are limited and often produce significant adverse effects. In this study, we evaluated the renal and cardioprotective effects of natural Gomisin A, alone and in combination with metformin, in a diabetic model. While treatment with Gomisin A at 20 mg/kg slightly improved glycemic control and renal function, co-administration with metformin yielded better results. The c

Enhancing Memory of Chirality in Phosphorus-Centered Radicals by Inductive Deceleration of Pyramidal Inversion.

The realization of stereospecific radical reactions-particularly those involving heteroatom-centered radicals-remains a formidable challenge due to the rapid configurational inversion (racemization) of transient radical intermediates. This study presents a general strategy to enhance the memory of chirality (MOC) in radicals by exploiting the inductive effect of substituents. Through DFT calculations, we demonstrate that the pyramidal inversion barrier of phosphorus-centered radicals can be dramatically increased by substitution with highly electronegative atoms. This deceleration of inversion

Initial and residual benefits of soil amendments in reducing phosphorus release from soils with simulated snowmelt flooding.

In the Canadian prairies, spring snowmelt occurs rapidly and causes flooding in low-lying areas, inducing anaerobic soil conditions and exacerbating phosphorus (P) release to meltwater. Soil amendments can mitigate P loss from flooded soils soon after amendment application; however, their residual benefits are less understood. We examined the initial and residual benefits of alum (Al2(SO4)3·18H2O), gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), and Epsom salt (MgSO4·7H2O) in a simulated snowmelt flooding experiment. Intact soil columns were taken from amended and unamended field plots in the same year and 1 year after

Rice Root Iron Plaque as a Molecular Sieve: Iron Oxyhydroxide-Mediated Selective Sequestration of Arsenate over Phosphate.

Iron oxyhydroxides in rice root iron plaques act as a molecular sieve, enabling rice to selectively uptake phosphorus while sequestering arsenic in paddies; however, the molecular mechanism of this filtration is still unclear. Here, we selected ferrihydrite and goethite, the active components of iron plaques, to elucidate this selective filtration. We demonstrated that under equimolar concentrations, ferrihydrite and goethite exhibited higher affinity for arsenate, substituting 31.36% to 46.99% of preadsorbed phosphate across pH 4.0-8.0. Then, our Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal

Climate extremes intensify global lake eutrophication by increasing the stress resistance of harmful bloom-forming algae.

Lake eutrophication is increasingly shaped by climate extremes, but how short-lived events yield persistent blooms remains unclear. Using global satellite records and laboratory and field experiments, here we show that heatwaves and extreme precipitation drive bloom dynamics beyond gradual warming. In harmful bloom-forming algae (HBFA), heatwaves trigger oxidative stress that rapidly induces intracellular polyphosphate and stabilisomes, dense polyphosphate-rich organelles. As intracellular ballast, stabilisomes drive downward migration, enabling access to sediment-derived phosphorus while avoi
