Advancements in fire-related toxic gas detection and prophylactic strategies: A focus on cyanide concentration analysis and antidote efficacy in controlled smoke inhalation models.

Fire smoke inhalation represents a major cause of acute mortality in fire incidents, with hydrogen cyanide being a critical contributor to rapid systemic toxicity. This study aimed to establish a controlled smoke inhalation model to characterize cyanide-dominant exposure and to evaluate the prophylactic efficacy of a nebulized antidote combination under acute conditions. A reproducible smoke chamber system was developed to generate cyanide-rich toxic atmospheres. C57BL/6 mice were exposed to controlled cyanide concentrations, followed by prophylactic administration of a nebulized formulation c

Silver-Functionalized Metal Oxide Nanofibers for High Precision Chlorine Sensing at the Parts-Per-Billion Scale with Tunable Selectivity.

Chlorine (Cl2) is a hazardous industrial gas and a choking agent, making highly sensitive ppb-level detection with tunable selectivity toward chemical warfare agent-related (CWA-related) analytes important. Here, we synthesized Ag-functionalized SnO2 and WO3 nanofibers by electrospinning and investigated how the host oxide governs Cl2 sensing and selectivity toward CWA-related analytes. The optimized Ag-functionalized SnO2 sensor (AgS5) showed a response of 6.89 to 500 ppb Cl2, an experimentally validated detection limit of 10 ppb, and a calculated lower limit of detection of 0.12 ppb. The hos

Self-Catalytic Mechanism of Prebiotic Reactions: From Formamide to Pyrimidines.

The search for prebiotic chemical pathways to biologically relevant molecules and their precursors has been a longstanding puzzle. On the basis of our previous experimental study, a general scheme for prebiotic reaction routes from formamide to different precursors and pyrimidine bases, namely, cytosine, uracil, 5-methylcytosine, thymine, isocytosine, and 2,4-diaminopyrimidine, is proposed. All required precursors, such as hydrogen cyanide, ammonia, water, formic acid, isocyanic acid, formyl cyanide, cyanamide, urea, 2-aminoacetonitrile, guanidine, formaldehyde, cyanovinylalcohol, and cyanoace

Characterization of Multitrait Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria From Opuntia ficus-indica in Different Moroccan Climates.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) enhance plant fitness through nutrient mobilization, hormone modulation, and improved tolerance to abiotic stresses. Despite the ecological and agricultural importance of Opuntia ficus-indica, a drought-adapted cactus widely cultivated in arid and semiarid regions, little is known about its rhizosphere microbiota. This study aimed to select culturable rhizobacteria associated with O. ficus-indica, assessing their plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits and identifying strains with potential for improving crop performance under challenging environmental c

Genomic insights and antifungal potential of Pseudomonas species isolated from maple sap, including the novel species Pseudomonas acericola sp. nov. and Pseudomonas edsoni sp. nov.

Fungal contamination poses a significant challenge in maple sap collection systems and postproduction processes, which affects the quality and shelf life of maple syrup. As an alternative to chemical treatments, microorganisms offer promising biocontrol potential. This study investigates nine Pseudomonas strains isolated from maple sap for their antifungal activity and genomic features. Whole-genome sequencing followed by comparative genomic analysis identified five distinct Pseudomonas species, including two previously uncharacterized taxa for which we propose the names Pseudomonas acericola

Genome assembly of Elcysma westwoodi provides insights into host-plant cyanogenic glucoside detoxification and chemical defence gene evolution.

Elcysma westwoodi is a major pest of cherry trees (Rosaceae), which contain high levels of cyanogenic glucosides that release toxic hydrogen cyanide upon tissue damage. To investigate the genomic basis of host-plant cyanogenic glucoside detoxification and the evolution of chemical defence genes, we generated a PacBio HiFi-based genome assembly of E. westwoodi. The final assembly spans 460.62 Mb with high contiguity (contig N50 > 15 Mb) and near-complete recovery of conserved genes (99.6% BUSCO completeness). We predicted 19,502 protein coding genes, with annotation completeness reaching 95.2%

Unraveling the Impacts of Preprocessing on the Metabolite Profile of Bitter Almond Using UPLC-MS/MS and GC-MS Analysis.

As a traditional Chinese medicine, bitter almonds contain amygdalin, which can be hydrolyzed by β-glucosidase to release highly toxic hydrogen cyanide. There are safety hazards in clinical use, and high-temperature pretreatment is required for use. This study is based on the differences in β-GC activity of bitter almonds treated with different pretreatment methods. SPME-GC-MS and UPLC-MS/MS combined techniques were used to analyze the metabolic profile differences before and after processing from both volatile and nonvolatile dimensions. A total of 30 compounds were identified through volatile

Dual role of HCN produced by the endophyte Pseudomonas urmiensis A32 in biocontrol and the defence response of pepper.

Plant-associated Pseudomonas species are widely recognised for their ecological versatility and potential as sustainable biocontrol and plant growth-promoting agents. Among their diverse metabolites, hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is traditionally considered a potent antimicrobial compound, yet its broader role in plant-microbe interactions remains underexplored. This study investigated Pseudomonas urmiensis A32, an endophytic bacterium previously shown to enhance drought tolerance and disease resistance in pepper (Capsicum annuum). Whole-genome analysis revealed genes involved in nutrient acquisition

Light-triggered hydrogen cyanide (HCN) release from self-immolative cyanohydrin donors.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is an emerging gasotransmitter and protic small molecule bioregulator. We report HCN release from a series of light-triggered, self-immolative cyanohydrin donors built on the 4,5-dimethoxy-o-nitrobenzyl (DMNB) platform. We demonstrate carbonate- and ether-ligated strategies for increasing release efficiency, expanding the chemical space for HCN release.

Statistical insights into the role of HCN-mineral interactions in aqueous aerosols during chemical evolution.

The polymerization of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is considered a central route to molecular complexity in prebiotic chemistry, following the seminal synthesis of adenine reported by Oró. Here, we investigate how mineral identity and mineral loading modulate cyanide reactivity in aqueous aerosols using selected geologically relevant silicate, oxide, carbonate, sulfide, and mixed mineral substrates as simplified analogues of early planetary mineral-water interfaces. Using a target-agnostic, systems-level strategy, we combine complementary spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques, such as FTIR sp

Differential inhibition of bark endophytes and a wood-decay fungus by inner bark of Sorbus commixta.

The endophytic mycoflora of the bark tissue of Sorbus commixta sampled from Hokkaido, Japan was investigated. Bark pieces were surface-sterilized and placed on potato dextrose agar to extract template DNA from the fungi. Twenty-one operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were isolated from whole and outer bark segments, with colonization frequencies of 20% and 43%, respectively. The fungal composition included 20% OTUs of Pezicula sporulosa and Xylaria spp. in the whole bark, 43% OTUs of Phaemoniella spp., and 24% OTUs of Helminthosporium spp. in the outer bark. Endophytic fungi were not detected i

DeepMech: a machine learning framework for chemical reaction mechanism prediction.

The ability to predict the complete, step-by-step mechanism of chemical reactions from first principles remains a grand challenge in science. The importance of chemical reaction mechanisms (CRMs) pervades almost all domains such as prebiotic chemistry, drug discovery, materials science and so on. Uncovering CRMs remains a complex task, traditionally reliant on expert-driven experiments or expensive quantum chemical computations. While deep learning (DL) studies have shown promise in predicting reaction outcomes, they have largely ignored important intermediates and mechanistic steps en route t

Nonconventional hydrogen and halogen bonds in the binary complexes of haloform with hydrogen cyanide and methylidynephosphane derivatives.

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the nature and stability of the nonconventional hydrogen bonds in the complexes formed between haloforms (CHX3, X = F, Cl, and Br) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) or methylidynephosphane (HCP) derivatives, denoted as MCZ (M = H, F, Cl, Br, CH3, C2H, CN, CP, CAs, Li, and Na and Z = N and P), with particular emphasis on the rarely investigated C-H⋯P and C-H⋯C hydrogen bonds. The more stable MCN complexes are governed by C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds, while the MCP systems show C-H⋯C/P/Cl hydrogen bonds and C-X⋯X/C/P halogen bonds. Complex stability increases wit

Nitrogen Status Rewires Transcriptional Regulation of Dhurrin, a Dual-Purpose Defense Metabolite in Sorghum bicolor.

Dhurrin, a cyanogenic glucoside, plays an important role in Sorghum bicolor physiology and defense. The concentration of dhurrin in sorghum is influenced by both nitrogen status and stage of plant organ development. While nitrogen resupply activates the expression of genes for dhurrin biosynthesis, the molecular mechanisms underlying this regulation remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the transcriptional response of sorghum to nitrogen resupply following growth under nitrogen-limiting conditions. Using a time-course design, we measured hydrogen cyanide potential (HCNp), growth, and

Host-recruited Bacillus and Pseudomonas strains provide potential biocontrol and yield protection against rice bacterial leaf blight.

Bacterial leaf blight (BLB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), threatens global rice production while growing bactericide resistance and environmental concerns necessitate sustainable disease management alternatives. We employed a microbiome-guided, habitat-specific isolation strategy targeting naturally recovered plants from BLB-endemic hotspots across ten districts of Punjab, Pakistan operating on the ecological premise that plants under pathogen pressure selectively enrich protective microbial taxa, making disease-affected hosts the most coherent source of adapted biocontrol ag

Rhizoxin and 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol contribute to biocontrol of Pseudomonas protegens Pf-5 against pea Ascochyta blight pathogen Didymella pinodes.

Biological control using beneficial bacteria is a promising strategy for managing pea Ascochyta blight (AB), yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we identified 10 bacterial strains from 4 genera, including Bacillus, Paenibacillus, Peribacillus, and Pseudomonas, that significantly reduced the severity of AB caused by Didymella pinodes under greenhouse conditions. Most strains inhibited D. pinodes in cultures, indicating a production of antimicrobial metabolite(s) by these bacteria. To identify the antimicrobial compounds responsible for inhibition of D. pinodes

Functional Annotation of Coding Sequences in the Cyanogenic Millipede Cherokia georgiana.

Across thousands of known millipede species, genetic data is extremely limited. Many interesting biological processes in millipedes are ill-defined, such as the production of a defensive hydrogen cyanide secretion and UV fluorescence. We describe a transcriptomic dataset of the millipede Cherokia georgiana, including predicted coding regions and functional annotations. This de novo transcriptome will facilitate future research in understanding gene expression under a variety of conditions. Next-generation sequencing was conducted on polyA-enriched mature messenger RNAs using Illumina 2 x 150 p

Extremohalophilic Stutzerimonas stutzeri mediated sodium complexation increases salt tolerance in wheat.

BACKGROUND: Hypersaline-tolerant bacterial metabolites are believed to play a critical role in sodium detoxification and salt stress tolerance in plants; however, this mechanism needs further investigation. This study aimed to evaluate halophilic bacterial strains from hypersaline environments for their ability to increase salt tolerance in wheat seedlings through sodium‒organic acid complexation, nutrient dissolution, and improved ionic homeostasis. METHODS: The halophilic bacterial strains were isolated from hypersaline conditions of salt mines and were characterized for multiple plant grow

Open-set combustion-fingerprint classification with out-of-distribution alerting for environmental fire-hazard screening.

Fire effluent gases - carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), hydrogen chloride (HCl), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) - are hazardous environmental contaminants released during structural and emerging fire incidents; rapid identification is critical for environmental hazard assessment and respiratory protection. The present framework does not measure these species directly; it classifies fire-material class and flags novel scenarios from bulk combustion-fingerprint features (CO, CO2, smoke extinction, and heat release rate), and is therefore a combustion-fingerprint screening tool rather than
