Investigation on thermal kinetic behavior of 5 aminotetrazole/sodium periodate gas generator.

This study presents the design of a gas-generating formulation with a stoichiometric 5-aminotetrazole/sodium periodate. TG-FTIR-MS analysis was used to investigate the thermal decomposition behavior of the gas generator. The thermal kinetic parameters were calculated by non-isothermal kinetic methods to gain insight into the reaction mechanism. The results of this study demonstrate a distinct decomposition process for this gas-generating agent compared to conventional 5AT-based formulations. Specifically, it eliminates the formation of melamine through deamination polymerization and subsequent

Photo-amygdalin: light-dependent control over hydrogen cyanide release and cytotoxicity.

Amygdalin is a natural glycosidic compound found in bitter almonds and apricot seeds. After enzymatic hydrolysis, amygdalin forms a cyanohydrin which spontaneously decays to release toxic hydrogen cyanide in a process called cyanogenesis. Due to this capacity to release cyanide, it has a long and controversial history of use as an anticancer therapeutic in alternative medicine. However, the inability to control amygdalin's cyanogenesis hinders its efficient medical use and renders it potentially dangerous. In this study we describe the design and development of 'photo-amygdalin', a compound wh

Determination of Hydrogen Cyanide by Gas Chromatography With Post-Column Reaction and Flame Ionization Detection.

A straightforward and practical 15-min gas chromatographic method utilizing flame ionization detection has been developed to measure hydrogen cyanide in various matrices. This new approach features a catalyzed two-stage post-column reaction that significantly enhances the detection and quantification of hydrogen cyanide. Selecting the right separation column is crucial for accurate analysis. Initial tests with porous layer open tubular columns resulted in significant peak tailing, rendering them unsuitable for trace-level analysis. Modified polyethylene glycol stationary phases also exhibited

Stability of Tin-Containing Hybrid Perovskites: The Thermal Decomposition of Formamidinium Tin Triiodide (FASnI3) Investigated by Thermogravimetry and Effusion Techniques.

The gas-releasing thermal decomposition processes of formamidinium tin triiodide perovskite (CN2H5SnI3, usually denoted as FASnI3 or, briefly, FASI) were investigated in order to obtain information on the temperature at which decomposition begins and on the nature of the gas species emitted under heating. Results of thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), and Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry (KEMS) experiments are presented. TG measurements showed that mass loss starts at temperatures much lower than those of the l

The role of endophytic bacteria in enhancing plant growth and health for sustainable agriculture.

Given the impact of abiotic and biotic factors on agriculture, it is crucial to adopt sustainable and environmentally friendly practices to enhance yields. One approach that is gaining prominence is the utilization of plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) in mainstream agriculture. Interactions between plants and microbes in the rhizosphere play a vital role in plant health, productivity, and soil fertility. PGPB, particularly endophytes that establish close associations with plants, have shown success in promoting plant growth and protecting plants against diseases and abiotic stresses throu

Computational Investigation of Radical- and Catalyst-Assisted Decomposition of CH2NO• to HCN.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is a chemically and prebiotically important molecule found in the Earth's atmosphere and other planetary environments. Previous photochemical studies have proposed that HCN could originate from reactions between methane photolysis products, such as methyl radical (CH3 •) and triplet methylene (3CH2), and reactive nitrogen species like atomic nitrogen (N) and nitric oxide (NO). In this study, we introduce a new atmospheric route to HCN formation involving the decomposition of CH2NOX intermediates, which are formed via the recombination of CH2NO• with other atmospheric rea

Elucidating the role of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the transformation of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) during the regeneration of spent fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts.

The emission of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) from the industrial fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalyst regenerator is a concerning pollutant that is highly toxic. Yet, the underpinning rationale particularly the role of carbon dioxide (CO2) and its competition with O2, remains poorly understood. Through the tests of three industrial spent FCC catalysts via temperature-programmed oxidation and Chemkin simulation, this study revealed a dual role of CO2 in the transformation of HCN. At high temperatures (e.g. >700oC), the presence of CO2 is in favor of promoting the thermal cracking of coke via the B

Novel UHPLC-(+ESI)MS/MS Method for Determining Amygdalin, Prunasin and Total Cyanide in Almond Kernels and Hulls (Prunus dulcis).

Almonds contain cyanogenic glycosides (CNGs), prunasin and amygdalin, which generate hydrogen cyanide upon hydrolysis. Different extraction and analytical methods are currently used to measure CNGs or cyanide (CN), necessitating distinct samples and can lead to inconsistent or incomparable results. To address this, we describe a method that uses ultrasonic-assisted sample extraction. Amygdalin and prunasin are measured directly in the extract, whereas CN is measured in the extract after derivatization with cysteine ethyl ester to form a cyano-S-ethyl-O-cysteine (CNCysEt) conjugate. The amygdal

A simple and specific colorimetric biosensor for early detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa wound infections.

Wound healing is a critical aspect of surgical care, often complicated by infections such as those caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA). In this study, we aim to develop a sensitive and specific colorimetric biosensor which allows early detection and naked-eye monitoring of PA wound infections. We used hydrogen cyanide (HCN) as a PA specific biomarker and aquacyanocobinamide (ACCbi), a vitamin B12 derivative, as the indicator which changes color from orange to violet upon interaction with HCN. We then encapsulated ACCbi with different electrospun fibers, including polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), po

Rhizobacterial diversity exhibiting biotic stress tolerance in association with wheat-cotton crop rotation: Implications for plant-microbe interactions and agroecosystem resilience.

Biotic stress, particularly from fungal diseases, significantly impedes agricultural productivity worldwide. To meet the increasing demand for sustainable food production, environment-friendly and cost-effective solutions are needed. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) provide a sustainable alternative by enhancing plant health and acting as biocontrol agents. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity and biocontrol potential of biotic stress-tolerant rhizobacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of cotton and wheat plants infected with fungi in a cotton-wheat rotation area.

Bio-mediated CN cycling in serpentinites and the origin of life.

Hydrogen-rich, high pH conditions associated with serpentinisation are fundamental to some theories of the origin of life on Earth and other planets. In these theories, the first life formed in hydrothermal vents from organic compounds produced by metal-catalysed reduction of carbon dioxide and nitrate by hydrogen. Competing theories suggest that life could not have arisen without hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and that HCN was provided by vaporisation of large impactors. Here, we show that carbon- and nitrogen-bearing species are associated with chalcopyrite and native copper in serpentinised perido

The dual nature of plant growth-promoting bacteria: Benefits, risks, and pathways to sustainable deployment.

Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) are pivotal in sustainable agriculture, enhancing crop productivity and reducing reliance on chemical inputs. However, their dual role as beneficial agents and potential stressors remains underexplored. This review examines the paradoxical adverse effects of PGPB, challenging the predominantly optimistic narrative surrounding their use. At the plant level, unintended consequences include hormonal imbalances (e.g., auxin-induced root inhibition), phytotoxic metabolite production (e.g., hydrogen cyanide), and trade-offs between growth and defense mechanisms

Prompt and delayed dissociation dynamics of dicationic HCN induced by electron impact.

We investigate the dissociation pathways of doubly ionized hydrogen cyanide (HCN2+) produced via 1.0 keV electron beam impact. Using a coincidence ion imaging spectrometer, we identify two distinct dissociation mechanisms: prompt decomposition, characterized by localized correlation islands in time-of-flight spectra, and delayed fragmentation, evidenced by elongated spectral tails. Kinetic energy release distributions indicate that the deprotonation channel (HCN2+ → H+ + CN+) stems from low-lying electronic states of the dication, aligning with prior photon double-ionization studies. However,

Direct, Selective, and Rapid Measurement of HCN at Sub-ppb Levels Using HiT-CD-IMS: Applications to Cell Culture and Breath Analysis.

This study demonstrates the use of a research-grade ion mobility spectrometer combined with a high-temperature negative corona discharge ionization source (HiT-CD-IMS) to detect hydrogen cyanide (HCN) emitted by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) cultures and in human breath. The HCN spectrum revealed distinct peaks for CN-, CNO-, and (CN)2- ions, with a resolving power of 63, successfully overcoming potential interferences such as the H2S peak by optimizing the experimental conditions. This approach achieved an estimated limit of detection (LOD) of 0.18 ppb. The method was applied to monitor HCN pro

Hydrogen cyanide and hydrocarbons mix on Titan.

This work reveals a striking exception to the well-established rule in chemistry that polar and nonpolar compounds do not spontaneously mix: insertion of methane, ethane, and other small hydrocarbons into the crystal lattice of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), a highly polar molecule. By mixing these components at cryogenic temperatures, we can observe distinct shifts in vibrational modes using Raman spectroscopy. Our computational predictions confirm that cocrystal structures of HCN and ethane, which match our experimental vibrational shifts closely, are thermodynamically and kinetically stable. Given

Enhancement of Tomato Growth Through Rhizobacteria and Biocontrol of Associated Diseases.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth-promoting effects of four rhizobacterial isolates (RS60, RS65, RS46, and RP6) isolated from the tomato rhizosphere. These isolates were screened for key plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) mechanisms, including ammonia production, nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production, and siderophore synthesis. Their potential to enhance seed germination and tomato plant growth was investigated in controlled and greenhouse conditions. Four isolates exhibited multiple PGPR attributes, notably IAA and am

Chemical effect of silver (Ag) and yttrium (Y) co-doping on silicon-based fullerene (Ag@Si59Y) sensor nanostructures: a computational adsorption study of cyanogenic halide gases.

Cyanogenic gases, such as hydrogen cyanide and cyanogen, are highly toxic and pose serious risks to both human health and the environment. Effective adsorption strategies are essential to mitigate these hazards. In this study, the adsorption potential of a silver-decorated and yttrium-doped silicon nanocluster (Ag@Si59Y) toward cyanogenic gases-BrCN, ClCN, and FCN-was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) at the ωB97XD/GenECP/LanL2DZ/Def2SVP level of theory. Adsorption was explored in two orientations for each gas molecule. The computed adsorption energies indicated favorable inte

Quorum sensing regulation by the nitrogen phosphotransferase system in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

UNLABELLED: In the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the nitrogen-related phosphotransferase system (PTSNtr) influences multiple virulence behaviors. The PTSNtr is comprised of three enzymes: first PtsP, then the PtsO phosphocarrier, and the final PtsN phosphoacceptor. We previously showed that ptsP inactivation enhances LasI-LasR quorum sensing, a system by which P. aeruginosa regulates genes in response to population density. LasI synthesizes a diffusible autoinducer that binds and activates the LasR receptor, which activates a feedback loop by increasing lasI expression. In thi
