Effects of air pollution on disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the associations of air pollution with disease activity and flare rate in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: This prospective cohort study included patients with RA who were treated at a tertiary medical centre in South Korea between January 2021 and December 2024. Air pollution exposure was estimated using monthly mean concentrations of 6 air pollutants (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, particulate matter [PM]10, and PM2.5). Disease activity and flares were recorded longitudinally at each outpatient visit. Assoc

Tissue Preservation and FFPE Samples: Optimized Nucleic Acids Isolation in Ewing Sarcoma.

Different methods have been described for the preservation of biopsy or resection samples. In routine pathology, the cheapest and most used method is fixation of samples in formalin and embedding in paraffin (FFPE samples). This method preserves tissue samples for a very long time and is suitable for several specialized techniques, such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and immunohistochemistry, the latter being the most frequent and often the only additional method used for the establishment of the final diagnosis. However, in light of the growing need for next-generation sequencin

Biochemical Identification of Salmonella Species: Classical Tools for Accurate Diagnosis.

Biochemical testing plays a crucial role in the detection and confirmation of Salmonella spp. Since the cultural characteristics of Salmonella often resemble those of other enteric pathogens, differentiation based solely on growth features can be challenging. Biochemical tests allow for accurate identification by exploiting the distinct metabolic traits of Salmonella. In this study, we described three key tests, including methyl red, hydrogen sulfide production, and urease production, which are particularly important for the confirmation of Salmonella.

Preparation of Postmortem Human Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded Frontal Cortex Tissue for Profiling Pyramidal Neurons Via Digital Spatial Profiling.

Digital spatial profiling (DSP) facilitates RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) of small populations of cells, specifically ~20 pyramidal neurons in postmortem formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) human brain tissue. This approach enables precise expression profiling via RNA-seq data linked to spatially characterized samples utilizing tissue-bound probes. We present a comprehensive protocol for manual slide preparation using the GeoMx DSP system as preliminary steps to spatial characterization of lamina-specific pyramidal neurons in human postmortem Brodmann area 9 (BA9) frontal cortex brain tissue.

Spatially Refined Analysis of Emission Burdens and Equity from Light-, Medium-, and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Traffic in the United States.

We estimate block-level emission intensities of nitrogen oxides (NOX) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from on-road vehicle traffic for every census block in the United States, combining MOVES-based emission factors with street level traffic data. We use this spatially refined, computationally efficient, and policy-sensitive metric to evaluate emissions burden. Despite comprising less than 11% of vehicle kilometers traveled, we find that medium- and heavy-duty trucks account for 46% of NOX and 50% of PM2.5 emission burden nationally ─ with PM2.5 burden from trucks dominated by exhaust emiss

Metal-Induced Localized Microcrystals Buffer Poisoning in NOx Catalytic Reduction.

Metal impurities in flue gas severely threaten the service life of NOx abatement catalysts. While traditional acid-base interaction strategies rely on sacrificial sites, such passive defense mechanisms merely mitigate activity loss rather than fundamentally resolving poisoning. This study establishes an active defense mechanism by fabricating amorphous high-entropy metal oxides capable of sequestering metal poisons by inducing localized microcrystallization. These resulting microcrystals are subsequently transformed into extra active centers for NOx reduction. Systematic investigation reveals

A Formaldehyde-Free, Soy Protein-Based Adhesive with P-N-Si Synergistic Flame Retardancy for Plywood Application.

To overcome the flammability and formaldehyde-emission problems associated with plywood, a novel soy protein-based intumescent flame-retardant adhesive with phosphorus-nitrogen-silicon (P-N-Si) synergism (C@Si@APP) was developed in this study. C@Si@APP was initially prepared by coating silane-modified ammonium polyphosphate with collagen. Subsequently, C@Si@APP was combined with lignin and adenine and incorporated into a soy protein, collagen, and isocyanate (MDI)-based adhesive matrix to fabricate a flame-retardant adhesive for eucalyptus plywood. Cone calorimeter (CONE) analysis demonstrated

Evolutionary Inferences Based on Thoracic Limb Muscles of South American Coati (Nasua nasua): Brachium and Craniolateral Antebrachium.

The South American coati (Nasua nasua) is a mammal of the order Carnivora and family Procyonidae, characterized by scansorial locomotion. Accordingly, several anatomical and functional studies examined its thoracic limbs. Nevertheless, the anatomical descriptions and terminology differ among those studies, and none considered the evolutionary derivations of the brachium and antebrachium muscles based on topology, innervation and anatomical variants. Therefore, the present study aimed to infer the muscle derivations and reconstruct muscle maps of the brachial and craniolateral antebrachial musc

Simultaneous valorization of nitrate and formaldehyde waste streams to hexamethylenetetramine via photo-electro-thermo-catalysis.

To remediate nitrate (NO3-) pollution and recover resources from formaldehyde wastewater, this work presents a waste valorization strategy integrating photoelectrocatalytic nitrate reduction (PEC NO3RR) to ammonia (NH3) with downstream chemical upgrading. Herein, a hollow MoO2@CuFe2O4@MnFe2O4 Z-scheme-Schottky dual heterojunction nanoreactor array is developed to spatially separate proton and nitrate adsorption sites. The MoO2@CuFe2O4@MnFe2O4 improves photogenerated charge separation and retaining robust redox capability, while the oxygen vacancy-rich MoO2 layer exhibits favorable photothermal

In Vivo Chemical Cross-Linking Coupled with Reversed-Phase Co-Fractionation Mass Spectrometry Enables Protein Complex Analysis.

Understanding protein-protein interactions (PPIs) and the architecture of protein complexes is essential for elucidating cellular functions and drug action mechanisms. Co-fractionation mass spectrometry (CF-MS) has emerged as an effective tool for analyzing protein complexes under near-native conditions, however, its resolution and structural fidelity are often compromised by complex dissociation during biochemical processing. Here, we present an analytical strategy that integrates in vivo formaldehyde cross-linking with reversed-phase cofractionation mass spectrometry (XL-RP-CF-MS) to identif

A Fast-Slow-Fast Strategy for Exploring Three-Component Reactions of Formaldehyde.

To explore a fast/slow reactivity partitioning strategy for the design of multicomponent reactions (MCRs), the fast-slow-fast (FSF) approach was applied to formaldehyde-based systems. The assembly procedure of substrates to the MCR product was designed to be a fast-slow-fast (FSF) cascade process. The most reactive one among all the substrates was converted rapidly to a substable substance (the fast first step), which can be slowly transformed to a highly reactive intermediate (the slow second step), and finally, the intermediate was trapped by another substrate to form the MCR product (the fa

Rhodium-Catalyzed Three-Component C(sp3)-H Activation of 8-Methyl Quinolines with Diazo Compounds and Formaldehyde/Formaldimine to Access Dual C(sp3)-C(sp3) Bonds.

The development of transition-metal-catalyzed three-component C(sp3)-H activation represents one of the most efficient strategies for the rapid construction of complex molecular architectures. Particularly, leveraging this strategy for the direct formation of dual C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds offers distinct advantages, whereas it remains largely challenging and underdeveloped. Herein, we report a rhodium-catalyzed three-component C(sp3)-H activation of 8-methyl quinolines with diazo compounds and formaldehyde/formaldimine. This protocol not only provides a novel route for the construction of dual C(sp

Rongalite-Promoted One-Pot Reductive Cyclization Strategy for the Construction of Pyrrolo[1,2-α]quinoxalines from 1-(2-Nitrophenyl)pyrroles.

A transition-metal-free strategy for the synthesis of pyrrolo[1,2-α]quinoxalines and 7-methylindolo[1,2-α]quinoxaline from 1-(2-nitrophenyl)-1H-pyrrole or 3-methyl-1-(2-nitrophenyl)-1H-indole using rongalite have been developed. In this transformation, rongalite serves a dual function, acting as both a reducing agent and a one-carbon (C1) synthon. The method offers an alternative approach to C-N bond formation. Furthermore, to investigate the reaction mechanism, several control experiments were performed, including radical scavenger studies, formaldehyde detection experiments, and reduction st

Compartment-specific oxylipin-derived carbonyl profiles in spinach chloroplasts.

The first compartment-resolved map of chloroplast carbonyls was established, revealing distinct carbonyl compositions and patterns of accumulation in thylakoids, envelopes, and stroma. Oxylipin-derived carbonyls, diverse aldehydes and ketones generated from oxygenated lipids, function as key cytotoxic agents and signaling molecules in oxidative stress responses of plants. However, the intracellular and sub-organellar sites at which individual carbonyl species occur remain poorly defined. Here, we analyzed carbonyl compositions in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) leaves, isolated chloroplasts, an

High-Performance SnO2 Ink for Detecting Low-Temperature H2S Gas with Advanced Dispensing Printing Technology.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a highly toxic and environmentally hazardous gas, necessitating sensitive and reliable detection at trace concentrations. In this study, a dispensing-printed SnO2-based MEMS gas sensor was developed using a sol-gel-derived SnO2 precursor ink deposited directly onto a Pt-interdigitated micro-hotplate. The precursor ink was optimized for dispensing printing and subsequently annealed at 450 °C to produce a crystalline SnO2 sensing layer. XRD and FTIR analyses confirmed the formation of crystalline tetragonal rutile SnO2 and characteristic Sn-O bonding, while FE-SEM revea

Bioinspired Janus-Structured Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Mask with Dual‑Scale Heterointerface for Ultrasensitive Exhaled H2S Detection in Periodontitis Diagnosis.

The accurate detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in exhaled breath is important for the early diagnosis of periodontitis; however, it is limited by high humidity in the oral environment, contaminant accumulation, and multicomponent interference. Herein, we present a Janus-structured surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform featuring a dual-scale heterogeneous interface inspired by the asymmetric wettability of lotus leaves for sensitive detection of ppb-level H2S. Specifically, thermal treatment of polypropylene melt-blown fabric precoated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) induces hydr

Tea polyphenols amplify oxidative stress-induced eradication of Staphylococcus aureus by disrupting the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) signaling pathway.

Endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) acts as a pivotal shield for Staphylococcus aureus against oxidative stress. Although tea polyphenols (TPs) are established antibacterial agents, their precise mechanistic impact on H2S-linked redox regulation has yet to be fully elucidated. Here, we test the hypothesis that TPs exert their bactericidal effect on S. aureus by compromising its intrinsic H2S-mediated antioxidant defense system. DL-Propargylglycine (PAG) was used to construct an H2S synthesis-inhibited model (designated WT + inh). The response of this model to TPs was evaluated against that of th

Biocatalytic synthesis of S-adenosyl-l-methionine analogues for allosteric activation of cystathionine-β-synthase.

Cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS) is the key regulatory enzyme of the transsulfuration pathway and plays a crucial role in eliminating homocysteine. Homocysteine, a by-product of methylation reactions, is a known risk factor for cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, all of which are among the leading causes of death worldwide. CBS represents a promising therapeutic target due to its allosterically inducible capacity to redirect homocysteine into sulfur metabolism, yielding the protective antioxidants cysteine, hydrogen sulfide and glutathione. Although the therapeutic benefit

Oxygen Vacancy-Modified WO3 for Advanced Photoelectrochemical H2S Sensing via Synergistic Interfacial and Surface Optimization.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a corrosive and extremely poisonous gas, poses serious threats to environmental security and human health, necessitating the development of highly sensitive and stable room-temperature sensing technologies. Conventional gas sensors are often limited by high operating temperatures and rapid deactivation. Herein, a solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for room-temperature gas sensing is developed by precisely controlling the oxygen vacancies (VOs) concentration in WO3, which optimizes interfacial transport and surface reaction kinetics. The results of integrated

Trace Hydrogen Sulfide Enhances Plasmid-Mediated Antibiotic Resistance Gene Transfer under Anaerobic Sewer-Like Conditions: Associations with Contact and Energy-State Responses.

The dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in sewer systems poses a potential threat to public health. However, it is currently unclear how hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in anaerobic sewers affects plasmid-mediated ARG transfer. Here, we evaluated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations (1-100 μmol·L-1) of H2S on ARG transfer across different sewer microbial communities. The results demonstrated that H2S significantly enhanced the transfer frequency of plasmid pKJK5 in sediment-derived (2.06-3.06-fold), sewage-derived (1.50-2.81-fold), and bioaerosol-derived (2.42-4.68-fol
