Associations of intraoperative end-tidal carbon dioxide concentrations with postoperative outcomes: is mechanical power next?

In an important patient-level analysis of two randomised controlled trials published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia, hypocapnia, as reflected by low end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) during surgery was associated with worse outcomes than normocapnia, with higher rates of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). The results can be used by anaesthesiologists in the operating theatre to reduce the occurrence of PPCs by carefully determining ventilatory settings to avoid overventilation in patients, and by considering cardiopulmonary interactions. This involves reducing tidal volume and

Activating Molybdenum Peroxide Scissors for Converting Polyamide Plastic into Low Carbon Alcohols.

Direct chemical conversion of plastic waste into low-carbon oxygenates, rather than carbon dioxide, with renewable energy, is important yet challenging. Due to high C─X (X═C, H, N) bond energy, fully optimized catalysts are required to enable precise bond cleavage for boosted efficiency and selectivity. Here, adaptable and recyclable molybdenum peroxide photocatalysts that demonstrate chemical scissors for the selective conversion of polyamide to alcohols are reported. It shows that dimensionally adaptable Mo(+5.8)-(O2) is activated via a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) process for loca

Integrated petrophysical and seal characterization of the heterogeneous jurassic plover formation for CO2 storage assessment in Northwest Australia.

Geological storage of carbon dioxide is critical to mitigate emissions; however, subsurface heterogeneity poses a major challenge. This study investigates the Jurassic Plover Formation in the Browse Basin, Northwest Australia, a region underexplored for carbon storage potential. An integrated petrophysical workflow was applied to the Kronos-1 and Poseidon-1 wells, combining borehole logs, petrographic analysis, and core measurements. The workflow included refined porosity-permeability modeling, shale volume estimation, water saturation calibration, and evaluation of top seal capacity under res

Experimental study of nanoparticle-stabilized foam with VTES surface modifier on generation, foamability, stability and oil recovery enhancement.

Gas injection in hydrocarbon reservoirs faces challenges, such as low macroscopic sweep efficiency and poor mobility control due to the low density and viscosity of injected gases, leading to gas fingering and gravity segregation. These problems can be resolved by injection of gas as foam to enhance gas mobility as well as sweep efficiency. However, during the foam injection in hydrocarbon reservoirs, foam stability is a crucial factor to enhance the recovery of the process, which could be improved by nanoparticles. Motivated by this interest, the present study aims to generate and stabilize f

Utilization of sequential model-based optimizer integrated machine learning models in correlation of famotidine solubility in supercritical carbon dioxide.

We investigated solubility variations of a medication in supercritical carbon dioxide with an insight into preparation of nanomedicines with improved aqueous solubility. As the case study, the solubility of famotidine (FAM) medicine in sc-CO2 (supercritical carbon dioxide) was computed as a function of temperature and pressure, with a particular focus on modeling and predicting solubility and sc-CO2 density. Three regression models with machine learning behavior including Quadratic Polynomial Regression (QPR), Weighted Least Squares (WLS), and Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) were employed to

Assessing urban CO2 emissions and sequestration potential: a case study of median strip trees in Baghdad.

Rapid population growth has led to increased concentrations of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), which contributes to rising temperatures. Trees are one of the most important tools for achieving carbon neutrality in cities. This study aims to evaluate the ability of trees planted in the median strip of Palestine Street in Baghdad to sequester CO2 from vehicle traffic emissions, using the Carbon Sequestration Index (CSI). A traffic survey was conducted on weekdays and holidays, with daily averages of 100,015 and 60,009 vehicles. Estimated annual emissions were 11,970,241.66 k

Tailoring chickpea protein functionality for food applications through supercritical CO2 processing.

This study evaluates the use of supercritical CO2 (SCCO2) as a dual-purpose method for defatting and modulating the functional properties of chickpea protein. Two processing routes were investigated: 1) post-extraction SCCO2 modification of protein obtained from full-fat flour (CP series), and 2) flour defatting followed by protein extract modification with SCCO2 at different pressures (DFCP series). CP0 and DFCP0 refer to proteins from untreated and SCCO2-defatted flours, respectively; CP75-800 and DFCP75-800 underwent additional SCCO2 treatments at indicated pressures. SCCO2 defatting at 850

Guard cell starch and malate metabolism facilitate stomatal opening in response to low CO2.

Guard cells adjust turgor to regulate stomatal aperture, integrating ion transport with metabolic adjustments. The effect of reduced CO2 on stomatal movement, expected under enhanced photosynthesis, remains largely unexplored. We exposed Arabidopsis thaliana plants to low CO2 before light onset and analyzed guard cell starch turnover, malate (Mal) accumulation, and stomatal conductance in wild-type and mutant lines. Low CO2 triggered rapid starch degradation and increased Mal levels in guard cells, accelerating stomatal opening. Mutants defective in starch degradation or hexose uptake showed i

Can sustained climate warming intensify the carbon source potential of saline lakes on the Qingzang Plateau?

Under global climate change intensification, the debate over whether high-altitude saline lakes act as carbon (C) emission sinks or sources remains unresolved. Moreover, there is currently a lack of systematic metabolic and mechanistic C assessments for saline lake ecosystems on the Qingzang Plateau (QZP), especially regarding their associative changes under climate change. Here, we used 18/16O technology and regression models to assess saline lake C metabolism on the QZP between 2000 and 2020. Additionally, we predicted the C metabolism of these lakes between 2030 and 2050 under three future

Superheated steam for regeneration of biomass-derived activated carbon: comparative evaluation of performance, life cycle impacts and net CO2 offset potential.

Coconut-shell derived activated carbon (AC); GCN has been used extensively in water treatment as an efficient adsorbent material. However, ACs progressively saturate with contaminants over time and require periodic regeneration to regain adsorption efficiency. This study presents an advanced superheated steam (SPH) (at 600 °C) method to regenerate saturated AC. This steam drives adsorbed contaminants to break down and detach from the carbon pores. With a regeneration efficiency of 95 %, SPH regeneration outperforms conventional chemical regeneration methods. The study also involves a comprehen

Metabolic and ventilatory constraints in long COVID individuals.

Long COVID is characterized by persistent symptoms and physiological impairments beyond acute infection. Oxygen consumption (VO₂) and ventilatory efficiency, key indicators of cardiorespiratory fitness, are commonly diminished in this population, contributing to exercise intolerance. This study compared cardiorespiratory patterns and exercise capacity among individuals with Long COVID (LCG), those with resolved symptoms (Short COVID; SCG), and healthy controls (CG). The secondary objective was to assess longitudinal changes over six months. Cross-sectional comparisons at baseline addressed the

Has the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis become stronger? A comparative analysis for OECD countries and selected late-industrializing Asian economies.

Concerns about the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis remain central to debates on whether economic growth inevitably worsens environmental outcomes or eventually leads to sustainability improvements. While the EKC framework has been extensively tested, there is limited comparative evidence on how it manifests across advanced OECD economies versus late-industrializing Asian countries. Motivated by this gap, this study investigates the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis, which posits a nonlinear relationship between economic growth and environmental degradati

High-fidelity prediction of drug solubility in supercritical CO₂ for pharmaceutical applications using advanced computational modeling.

Accurately estimating the solubility of drugs in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO₂) still represents a major difficulty in drug formulation, separation processes, and green technologies. Traditional empirical and semi-empirical methods usually have a hard time representing the complex non-linear interactions that determine solubility under different thermodynamic conditions (e.g., T and P), which, in turn, restricts their applicability and predictive consistency. This study presents an ensemble framework that combines three machine learning regressors, namely, Extreme Gradient Boosting Regre

Advancing anaerobic microbial studies with in situ Raman spectroscopy: Methanogenic archaea as a model.

Methanogenic archaea play a critical role in methane (CH4) production and the global carbon cycle, yet accurately monitoring their gas metabolism under anaerobic conditions remains a technical challenge. In this study, we developed a Raman spectroscopy-based gas quantification model, achieving high-precision monitoring of CO2-N2-CH4 ternary gas mixtures over a temperature range of 12-52 °C. The model exhibited strong linear correlations between the Raman peak area ratios and gas molar ratios, which were further validated against gas chromatography, revealing no significant differences (p > 0.0

Rho GTPase overexpression impacts leaf internal architecture and mesophyll conductance in Arabidopsis.

Leaves are built from multiple cell types and are structured to enable the conversion of carbon dioxide and water into sugars in the process of photosynthesis. Understanding how cell architecture impacts the movement of CO2 within leaves may provide means to improve photosynthesis. Here, we examined the impact of mesophyll cell architecture on air networks and air permeability by employing high-resolution tomography data in leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana wild-type plants and in plants with altered Rho of Plant (ROP)-GTPase-related activities. We employed high-resolution tomography to character

Hydroxyl Radical-Driven Oxidation as a Key Pathway for Greenhouse Gas Production During Soil Drying-Rewetting.

The drying-rewetting of soil can increase the release of greenhouse gases over a short time period and is one of the key pathways for greenhouse gas emissions in many terrestrial ecosystems, particularly in drylands. The mechanisms underlying this pulse of greenhouse gas emissions remain nearly unknown. Here, we conducted simulated soil rewetting experiments using typical cover of dryland soils (bareland, cyanobacteria/lichen-covered soil, and moss-covered soil). The 13C, 15N, and 18O labeling techniques allowed to explore the intrinsic mechanisms of rapid carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) release f

Optimization of Operating Parameters Using Response Surface Methodology for CO2/CH4 Separation Using Polysulfone/NH2‑MIL-125(Ti) Mixed Matrix Membrane.

The natural world and human civilization face serious threats from global warming caused by increasing anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In this study, we examine the optimization of operating parameters within mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) using NH2-MIL-125-(Ti), a metal-organic framework (MOF) dispersed within a polysulfone (PSf) polymer matrix to achieve efficient CO2/CH4 separation. Sustainable CO2 capture is the motivation behind this study, which aims to improve the membrane technology using the response surface methodology (RSM). RSM was applied (a statistical and mathematic

Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Malachite Green and Cr(VI) Using Co-MOF and Bacterial Cellulose@Co-MOF Biocomposite: A Green Approach.

The persistent presence of synthetic dyes such as malachite green (MG) and inorganic heavy metals such as Cr-(VI) in industrial effluents poses a major environmental threat due to their toxicity and resistance to biodegradation. Their high solubility and bright colors make removal difficult, necessitating efficient and sustainable remediation techniques. Photocatalysis is an environmentally friendly water treatment technique that uses light energy to activate a photoactive catalyst, degrading pollutants into less harmful products, such as carbon dioxide and water. This study investigates the p

The short-term effects of ocean acidification on the epiphytic bacterial community of Sargassum thunbergii via high-throughput sequencing.

Marine macroalgae and their epiphytic bacteria have established a symbiotic relationship. Although the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on macroalgae have been extensively studied, its impact on these epiphytic bacteria remains unclear. This study investigated the OA-induced shifts in the epiphytic bacterial community of Sargassum thunbergii from Qingdao's intertidal zone using 16S rDNA sequencing. The results indicated that elevated CO2 altered bacterial community structure and function, reducing diversity while maintaining dominant taxa but significantly changing their relative abundances
