Nitrogen oxides (NOx) reduction is of great significance for further reducing both PM2.5 and ground-level ozone concentrations. Controlling nitrogen oxide emissions from coal-biomass cocombustion is an urgent challenge. This study develops a novel standalone Chemical Reactor Network (CRN) model to mechanistically elucidate the distinct nitrogen transformation pathways in cocombustion environments. This work reveals an enhanced bidirectional NO-N2O interconversion in the dilute phase, mediated through both direct NCO/NH radical routes and indirect pathways involving NO2 intermediates. The key d

Despite advancements in alternative fuel combustion that have effectively eliminated carbon emissions, NOX emissions remain a significant challenge. This article explores the characteristics of various combustion regimes, with a particular focus on CH4/H2/CO syngas fuels. The findings indicate that the most practical method to achieve exceptionally low NOX emissions in industrial settings is by adopting quasi-mild combustion (QMC) regimes or operating under conditions closely aligned with this regime. Therefore, a new concept titled "FGR-threshold" is introduced as a specific flue gas recircul

This study aimed to investigate the dynamic changes in the flavor profile and microbial community of snakehead (Channa argus) treated with an edible coating during refrigerated storage at 4 °C. E-nose sensor data revealed that the raw samples exuded offensive odors with high levels of nitrogen oxides, methane, sulfur-containing compounds and terpenes after storage. Furthermore, the signals from gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) demonstrated that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) characterized by pungent odors, such as 1-octen-3-ol, served as spoilage markers. The edible coa

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions and their subsequent secondary transformation processes drive ozone (O3) formation. However, observed ambient concentrations (OBS-VOCs) only represent the net residual levels following atmospheric chemical consumption, imposing considerable uncertainty in identifying key species. To address this limitation, this study calculated the photochemical initial concentrations (PIC-VOCs) for 70 VOC species observed in the Greater Bay Area, incorporating kinetic parameters for their reactions with major atmospheric oxidants. Results showed a net VOC consumpti

Although post injection (PoI) mode is a prominent technique for attaining lower carbon-based emissions from diesel engines, it offers a disadvantage of higher fuel consumption. In this work, PoI mode was explored with a prime objective of improving fuel consumption while further improving the carbon-based emissions. B30 was considered as a base fuel and M10 blend was formed by adding 10% methanol into base fuel and was used under PoI mode to achieve ultra-low smoke emissions as methanol has highest oxygen content and lowest carbon content among all the alcohol fuels. The usage of methanol blen

BACKGROUND: Black carbon (BC) is an air pollutant of growing concern due to its adverse impacts on health and climate. Growing evidence suggests that BC could have a number of negative impacts on morbidity and mortality, but more evidence is needed.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study are to quantify any associations between BC exposure and cause-specific (cardiovascular and cancer) mortality outcomes.
METHODS: Using the Malmö Diet and Cancer Cohort linked with a high-resolution dispersion model, we examined the association between long-term exposure to locally emitted BC, nitrogen oxide

Incomplete combustion of polluting solid fuels contributes severe air pollution, threatening public health, thus the transition toward clean modern energies is emphasized as one important Sustainable Development Goal. While gaseous fuels have been documented to significantly reduce particulate matter emissions, growing concerns highlight pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (mainly NO and NO2) generated during the gas cooking could pose non-negligible risks to indoor air quality and residents' health. This study systematically reviewed studies on nitrogen oxide emissions from household gas combu

As one of China's densely populated and economically developed regions, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) area faces severe ozone (O3) pollution, largely driven by nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through complex chemical reactions. A detailed quantification of the specific contributions of various NOx and VOCs sources to O3 levels under meteorological and boundary-layer dynamics is crucial for effective pollution control in the BTH region. In this study, we developed and implemented an explicitly tagging approach and process analysis method in the WRF-Chem model to at

To enhance the environmental benefits of producing "zero-carbon" fuels from waste biomass pyrolysis, it is essential to suppress the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) at the source. The key lies in precisely regulating the migration and transformation behavior of nitrogen during the pyrolysis process. Addressing the limitations of traditional experimental methods in analyzing this complex process, this study proposes for the first time the Pyro-SPIN (Source Parameter-based Integrated Nitrogen Migration) model, which enables the synergistic prediction and optimization of nitrogen migration pat

The presented work explores diesel pilot injection (PI) mode with a prime objective of resolving the inherent problem of increased smoke emissions associated with it. The problem of greater smoke emissions under PI mode was addressed by using methanol and a cetane enhancer (CE) with the base fuel. PI mode was investigated by varying pilot injection timing (PIT) as well as pilot injection ratio (PIR) using B30 (30% Biodiesel + 70% Diesel) as a base fuel and single injection (SI) mode with the base fuel served as a reference condition. The biodiesel for the presented study was derived from the w

The association of natural environmental exposure and air pollution with depression incidence among cancer survivors, as well as the potential role of plasma metabolomics, remains unclear. Here, we analyze 21,507 cancer survivors from the UK Biobank over a median follow-up of 12.39 years and find that individuals exposed to higher levels of green space and natural environment (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1) within a 1000-m buffer have 15.8% (95% CI: 4.0%-26.1%) and 18.2% (95% CI: 7.0%-28.1%) lower risks of depression, respectively. The strongest protective association is observed among breast cancer

Despite considerable reductions in mobile source emissions, annual average aerosol concentrations measured in Los Angeles using Federal Reference Methods (FRM) have not appreciably declined over the last decade. Here, we use submicron aerosol measurements and zero-dimensional modeling to quantify the impacts of these emissions reductions on aerosol formation in Pasadena, CA during the late spring and summer of 2022. Reductions in secondary organic aerosol (SOA) concentrations expected from reduced mobile source emissions appear to have been largely offset by increases in hydroxyl radical conce

This paper investigates hydrogen combustion in boilers, which appears to be a more efficient approach compared to fuel cells for heating applications. However, one of the major drawbacks of hydrogen combustion in the presence of air is the formation of NOx. To address this, the authors propose using direct UV light photolysis as an innovative technique to reduce NOx levels in hydrogen flue gases. The method involves constructing a reactor for hydrogen combustion and integrating a UV light source into it. Experimental results indicate that UV light can significantly reduce the concentrations of

Nitrogen oxides represent a major source of concern related to atmospheric pollution, causing substantial impacts on human health. One innovative approach to reducing these emissions, and a promising alternative to conventional methods using NH3, is selective catalytic reduction with carbon (SCR-C). The aim of this study is the development of carbon-based catalysts that are active in the reduction of NO. For that, carbon nanotubes were subjected to treatments to modify their surface chemistry, including introducing oxygen and nitrogen groups, as well as potassium (K) and copper (Cu) incorporat

Cement co-processing of municipal solid waste (MSW) has been widely recognized as a promising waste management strategy. Given the substantial NOx emissions from cement industries and the well-established NOx reduction potential of hydrocarbon reburning, this study proposed a novel approach using MSW pyrolysis volatiles as a reburning fuel in cement precalciners, enabling both waste valorization and emission reduction. To confirm the applicability of this approach, the effects of pyrolysis parameters, reaction temperature, gas compositions, and cement raw meal were experimentally investigated

Particulate nitrate (NO3-) is an increasingly important component of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) during winter in both the North China Plain (NCP) and Northeastern United States (NE US). In this study, we conducted a comprehensive assessment of NO3- formation and its response to gaseous precursors in the NCP and NE US using extended ground-level measurements and model simulations during the wintertime. Different emission control policies implemented in two regions affect the relationship between NO3- and NO2. In the NCP, despite large decreases in anthropogenic NOX emissions, the NO3- conc

Enzymes use electrostatic interactions to recognize their substrates, preorganize active sites, and stabilize reaction transition states. Formamidopyrimidine-DNA glycosylase (Fpg) is a bacterial enzyme that repairs a pro-mutagenic DNA lesion, 8-oxoguanine; its human homologues are important for cancer prevention. General acid-base catalysis in the active site of Fpg requires a finely tuned proton transfer between Pro1 and Glu2 residues. To assess the protonation state of the active site experimentally, we used EPR spectroscopy with a novel imidazolidine nitroxyl spin label responsive in the ph

MicroRNAs regulate gene expression through sequence-specific interactions with target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), and their misregulation is a hallmark of cancer. MicroRNA-34a (miR-34a), a key modulator of the tumor suppressor p53, binds the mRNA encoding sirtuin 1 (mSirt1) and adopts multiple conformational states that influence repression efficiency. While such dynamics have been characterized in vitro, extending these studies to cellular environments is hampered by weak signals and substantial background inherent to nucleic acid NMR. To overcome this limitation, we developed a site-directed spi

Bioethanol fireplaces are marketed as clean and decorative heating alternatives. However, their impact on indoor air quality (IAQ) remains poorly characterised. This study investigates the indoor levels of gaseous and particulate pollutants using a bioethanol fireplace operated under realistic conditions. Two types of bioethanol fuels and two burner designs, a single-chambered (SC) and a double-chambered (DC), were tested under minimal ventilation. Concentrations of CO, NO, NO2, CO2, NH3, N2O, C2H6O, total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), and carbonyl compounds were measured, while particul
