Enhancing the anticancer efficacy of a nitric oxide and formaldehyde co-donor through isotope substitution.

Rapid systemic elimination of drugs remains a significant challenge in cancer therapy. Herein, an isotope substitution strategy is employed to enhance the therapeutic potential of a novel nitric oxide and formaldehyde co-donor, 3,5-dinitro-1,3,5,7-tetraaza[3.3.1] nonane (DPT), by modulating its metabolic fate and improving its pharmacokinetic behavior. Based on the parent compound, deuterated (DPT-d10), nitro-15N-substituted (DPT-15N2), and dual-modified (DPT-15N2 + d10) derivatives were synthesized. These isotope substitution derivatives retain the electronic properties and functional integri

Fabrication of long-lived afterglow composites of sulfur nanodots through a melt-injection reaction.

Sulfur nanodot composites were synthesized by injecting a mixture of sulfur nanodots and paraformaldehyde into molten urea, leading to the uniform incorporation of sulfur nanodots into a urea-formaldehyde matrix. The matrix boosted the afterglow performance of the sulfur nanodots by forming cross-linked networks.

Room-Temperature Formaldehyde Oxidation over ZIF-Derived Co-Based Catalysts: Morphology-Dependent Co-N4 Sites and Enhanced Oxygen Activation.

The development of high-efficiency non-noble-metal catalysts for HCHO removal is of great significance in indoor air purification. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are characterized by large specific surface areas, well-defined porous structures, and tunable electronic properties, making them suitable for constructing single-atom catalysts with adjustable coordination environments. In this study, three Co-ZIF materials with distinct morphologies were synthesized and subsequently pyrolyzed, yielding cobalt-based catalysts with varied coordination structures. Among these catalysts, the Co-

A cucurbit[8]uril-triggered ionic photosensitizer in solution and solid states: selective control of 1O2 and O2˙- generation.

Selective control of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation captures the imagination of scientists because of its broad potential applications in photochemical reactions and biomedicine. Herein, we develop a novel supramolecular method enabling selective control of 1O2 and O2˙- generation based on host-guest assembly in solution and the solid state. The cationic guest G-I (Cl- as counteranions) lacks the ability to sensitize ROS but is transformed into an efficient organic photosensitizer through face-to-face dimerization within the cucurbit[8]uril (Q[8] or CB[8]) cavity via host-guest inter

Photodegradation of ciprofloxacin by tannin-barium titanate catalysts and evaluation via artificial neural network modeling approaches.

The visible-light-driven removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) remains a challenge due to its persistence and contribution to antibiotic resistance. In this study, tannin-modified barium titanate (BaTiO₃) composites were synthesized using three different tannin forms (formaldehyde tannin, calcined tannin, and calcined formaldehyde tannin) to enhance photocatalytic performance. UV-DRS analysis confirmed that tannin modification effectively reduced the band gap of BaTiO₃ from ~ 3.4 eV to 3.15 eV (FTB) and ~ 2.6 eV (C-TB and C-FTB), enabling efficient visible-light activity. Under optimal operating cond

Isohemagglutinins exhibit synergistic polyreactivity toward Streptococcus pneumoniae surface antigens: implications for broad-spectrum reactivity of human antibodies.

Synergistic polyreactivity of antibodies—where distinct oligo- or polyreactive clones combine to enable broad-spectrum antigen binding—was recently demonstrated for human anti-galactose-α-1,3-galactose (αGal) antibodies. However, it remains unclear whether this phenomenon also occurs in other antigen-defined antibody populations. Here, we investigated synergistic polyreactivity in isohemagglutinins (naturally occurring antibodies against ABO blood group antigens) and its potential role in antimicrobial defense. Isohemagglutinins were affinity-purified from pooled plasma from groups of healthy

Multi-channel functionalized nanofiber membranes with high mechanical strength for formaldehyde degradation, air purification, and dye degradation.

Nanofiber membranes are considered to be one of the potential materials for air and water purification. Nevertheless, their relatively weak mechanical properties not only limit functional modification but also compromise long-term durability. In this study, the multifunctional tubular nanofiber membrane was specifically developed for indoor air purification and water purification. The resulting tubular nanofiber membrane exhibited exceptional tensile strength (>570 MPa) and high packing density. Through mussel-inspired surface modification and blending methods, manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanopar

Enhancing wood composite materials with formaldehyde-removing microcapsules featuring long-lasting, slow-release, and environmentally benign characteristics.

The long-term emission of free formaldehyde from plywood is a common problem, and the addition of formaldehyde capture agents typically reduces the plywood bonding performance. In this paper, melamine(ME)@sodium alginate (SA)/ethyl cellulose (EC) double-shell microcapsules (MEM) were prepared for the first time by the sol-gel method. The preparation process was optimized by response surface methodology via Box-Behnken design, and the results were highly reliable. MEM showed good spheroidizing properties, and its coating rate reached 71.97%. When 8% MEM was added to plywood, the emission of for

A new highly sensitive fluorescent probe for fluorescence sensing of formaldehyde in living cells/food samples.

Formaldehyde (FA), which is widely used in construction, pharmaceutical, and food industries, ranks among the top three indoor pollutants. As living standards improve, public awareness of food safety has gradually increased. Therefore, it is crucial for human health to find a simple and effective method for detecting FA levels in food. In this work, a new highly sensitive FA fluorescent probe, named LTY, is reported. When reacting with FA, the probe LTY produces an intense fluorescent signal due to the disruption of the PET effect. The probe LTY has been successfully used to image FA in living

1-Amino-but-3-enes scavenge formaldehyde and glyoxylic acid.

Reactive carbonyl compounds are common pollutants and endogenous metabolites that are often toxic at high concentrations. Removal/detoxification of carbonyl compounds requires selective small molecule scavengers; however, few molecules suitable for this task have been fully characterised. Here, we report NMR-based kinetic and selectivity studies on representative 1-amino-but-3-enes, which are reported to be selective formaldehyde scavengers. Our experiments reveal that 1-amino-but-3-enes containing phenyl groups at position 1 react with formaldehyde via a 2-aza-Cope rearrangement. However, the

Lignin based regenerated cellulose guided supramolecular reassembly from waste MDF into nitrogen-doped hierarchical carbons for sustainable energy storage.

The efficient and sustainable conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into carbon materials remains a significant challenge due to weak interfacial interactions and poor pore structure control. Herein, a supramolecular deconstruction-reconstruction strategy coupled with defect engineering is reported for the upcycling of waste medium-density fiberboard into nitrogen-doped biochar for supercapacitor electrodes, thereby mitigating landfill waste and reducing environmental impact. Acidic lithium bromide selectively disrupts cellulose fibers, followed by ethanol-induced regeneration into a sub-nanop

Mangiferin Alleviates Formaldehyde-Induced Tau Hyperphosphorylation and Cognitive Impairment in Mice via the PI3K/AKT/GSK3β Pathway: Insights From Network Pharmacology and Experimental Validation.

Studies have demonstrated that accumulation of formaldehyde (FA) in the body can result in Alzheimer's disease (AD) like changes including cognitive impairment, Aβ deposition, and Tau hyperphosphorylation. Mangiferin (MGF), a natural flavonoid compound, has been suggested in previous reports to have potential in the treatment of AD. This study integrated network pharmacology and in vivo experiments to elucidate the therapeutic potential and mechanisms of MGF in mitigating FA-induced neurotoxicity. Potential overlapping targets between MGF and AD were identified using jvenn. Functional enrichme

Modulation of GSNOR activity for improved NO homeostasis and flood resilience in plants.

Flood-induced hypoxia (low oxygen concentration) is increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change, leading to significant crop yield losses and posing a major threat to global food security. S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) is a highly conserved, cysteine-rich homodimer that regulates the cellular level of the most abundant nitric oxide (NO) reservoir S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO). GSNOR plays a fundamental role in NO homeostasis, as well as in plant development and stress responses, particularly hypoxia. This review summarizes the critical position of GSNOR in the plant hypo

Formaldehyde is released from cyanoacrylate adhesives used in venous occlusion systems.

ObjectivesCommercially available cyanoacrylates are known to release formaldehyde during degradation. However, it is unknown whether venous adhesive cyanoacrylates used in the treatment of saphenous veins release formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a known contact allergen, carcinogen and sensitiser.MethodsVenaSeal®, VenaBlock®, Glubran® Tiss 2, Histoacryl®, and Supaglue® were investigated in vitro. All adhesive agents were polymerised in phosphate-buffered saline, sealed in glass bottles and incubated at 37°C for up to 12 weeks. Headspace-gas chromatography mass spectrometry was used to measure for

Impact of Copper on the Physiology and Transcriptome of Methylosinus Trichosporium OB3b Grown on Either Methane or Methanol.

Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b is a model methanotroph that converts methane to CO2 with methanol, formaldehyde, and formate as intermediates. Here we show that copper has a significant impact on the ability of Msn. trichosporium OB3b to grow on methanol, that is, growth consistently occurred on methanol in the absence of copper but not in its presence. Growth on methanol in the presence of copper, however, occurred in the presence of MOPS buffer that stabilized pH. Examination of transcriptome profiles, NADH/NAD ratios, and formate production indicates that growth disruption in the presence

Engineering energy-efficient Saccharomyces cerevisiae for methanol and CO2 assimilation.

Methanol is a promising one-carbon (C1) feedstock for microbial bioconversion; however, engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae often faces energetic constrains during its assimilation. Here, we develop SC-AOX25, an energy-efficient methylotrophic S. cerevisiae, through engineering of heterologous methanol-formaldehyde-formate (MFF) oxidation pathways coupled with adaptive laboratory evolution. SC-AOX25 efficiently generates adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) during methanol metabolism while co-assimilating methanol-derived intermediates (formaldehyde, format

A novel paper/plastic-based hybrid strip test for rapid and multiplexed colorimetric detection of milk adulterants.

Milk adulteration remains a major concern for food safety and consumer protection, as it can compromise nutritional quality and pose health risks. This study presents a low-cost hybrid paper/plastic strip test for the simultaneous detection of seven common adulterants in cow milk: urea, hydrogen peroxide, starch, formaldehyde, antioxidants (e.g., ascorbic acid), sodium hypochlorite, and neutralizers/detergents, using a pH-based colorimetric sensing without sample pretreatment. The device was fabricated using a craft cutter and combined paper and plastic substrates, allowing multiplexed detecti

Advancing green chemistry in histopathology: A comparative study of coconut oil and turpentine oil as deparaffinizing agents.

INTRODUCTION: Precise microscopic examination is highly dependent on the quality of tissue processing. A number of chemicals such as formaldehyde, xylene, ethanol, and various stains are utilized in diverse stages of routine tissue processing. Of these, xylene causes potential health hazards. Studies on biosafe substitutes for xylene were experimentally evaluated to be effective only at temperatures well above the temperatures used in routine histopathology, which renders brittleness and loss of antigenicity to tissue specimens. The present study aimed to compare the efficacy of coconut oil an

Chemical characterisation and cytotoxic analysis of an electronic cigarette and heated tobacco product compared to a conventional cigarette in human lung cell lines.

The use of electronic nicotine delivery systems, such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HTPs), is increasing, but knowledge of their short and long-term toxicological effects remains limited. Here, aerosols generated from an e-cigarette using a flavour-free e-liquid base, both with and without nicotine, an HTP, and a conventional cigarette were characterised for the production of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carbonyls and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Furthermore, extracts from vapour and smoke were generated, and their acute toxicity was assessed in human lung epit

Global OMI HCHO Level-3 oversampling dataset: high spatial resolution and lightweight uncertainty.

Satellite observations of tropospheric formaldehyde (HCHO) have been widely used to support diagnosing atmospheric environmental quality. As one of the most classic trace gas payloads, the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) releases HCHO Level-2 data, while coarse resolution and relatively high uncertainty reduce the potential value of the data. We report a global multi-scale HCHO oversampling dataset version 1.0 (referred to as OMHCHOS V1.0) produced by NASA Level-2 OMI HCHO product using self-developed oversampling algorithm, with data from 2005 to 2023 as of the date of submission.
