Concise trichlorination of methyl ketones using sodium hypochlorite pentahydrate.

We report a practical and efficient method for the synthesis of trichloromethyl ketones from the corresponding methyl ketones via a two-step sequence involving trifluoroacetylation followed by selective chlorination. The key chlorination step proceeds under mild, weakly acidic conditions using sodium hypochlorite pentahydrate, thus avoiding the use of hazardous chlorine gas or strong bases. A wide range of aromatic and aliphatic methyl ketones was successfully converted into the corresponding trichloromethyl ketones in high yields. Mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction involves the for

A human airway-on-a-chip microphysiological system for modeling chlorine gas toxicity.

There is a critical need to understand pathophysiological mechanisms involved in injury from acute chlorine gas (Cl2) exposure. Limited information is available regarding the time course and mechanisms of injury after acute Cl2 exposure due to a lack of human clinical data and limited fidelity of pre-clinical animal models. We designed and integrated a Cl2 exposure platform to generate and deliver precise concentrations of Cl2 to a microfluidic human airway-on-a-chip microphysiological system. Chemical, biological, structural, and functional airway-on-a-chip responses to Cl2 exposure were char

Lethality is local, but survival is systemic: Temporal and multi-organ responses to chlorine gas exposure in a murine model.

Chlorine gas (Cl2) is a highly toxic chemical associated with both localized lung injury and systemic health effects. While pulmonary damage has been well characterized, the systemic inflammatory and metabolic responses remain poorly understood. We aimed to define the temporal and multi-organ responses to Cl2 exposure in a murine model, with a focus on identifying spatiotemporal inflammation and its impact on survival and lethality. SKH1 mice were exposed for 10 min to varying concentrations of Cl2 (94.4-810 ppm, representative of non-lethal, LD10, and LD50 doses) and monitored for respiratory

Investigating Chlorate Occurrence in Hungarian Drinking Water: A Survey Analysis of Treatment Plant Practices.

The revised EU Drinking Water Directive, which designates chlorate as a regulated parameter, presents a significant challenge for Hungary, where breakpoint chlorination with sodium hypochlorite is widely used for ammonium removal. Because hypochlorite decomposes during storage, half of the surveyed plants reported chlorate concentrations exceeding the national limit of 0.25 mg/L. A survey conducted on 208 drinking water treatment plants evaluated current operational practices and mitigation strategies. Chlorate occurrence was primarily associated with systems using sodium hypochlorite as the m

Optimization and application of characterization methods for acidic impurities in hydrogen for proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

BACKGROUND: To ensure the long-term efficient operation of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), the quality of hydrogen and trace impurities must be strictly controlled. Halides and formic acid, as acidic impurities, can have a negative impact on the performance and service life of fuel cells. However, the standard methods recommended by ISO, SAE and the National Energy Administration of China for detection of trace acidic impurities in hydrogen are still not mature. Poor selectivity and low sensitivity are exhibited in other methods. The manual absorption process is complex, and multi

A novel HF free, rapid microwave-assisted vanadium-catalysed acid dissolution (MW-VCAD) of ceramic boron carbide (B4C) for the accurate and precise determination of trace metallic impurities and total boron using ICP-OES.

BACKGROUND: Boron carbide (B4C) is an extraordinary ceramic material, known for its remarkable resistance to oxidation in air and chlorine gas even at 700 °C. This makes B4C extremely challenging to dissolve using wet chemical methods. This study, for the first time presents a novel HF free, and rapid microwave-assisted vanadium-catalysed acid dissolution (MW-VCAD) method for the complete dissolution of B4C. The enhanced oxidative capacity of HClO4-H2O2-H2SO4 in the presence of V5+ catalyst ensured oxidation of B4C to H3BO3 with the assistance of microwave heating. RESULTS: The optimized meth

Occupational exposure to chlorine gas and ultrafine particles during surface disinfection: A comparative study of wiping versus spraying methods.

Environmental surface disinfection is a fundamental component of infection prevention and control (IPC) in healthcare settings. Sodium hypochlorite remains widely used owing to its broad-spectrum efficacy, availability, and low cost. Concerns regarding occupational health risks associated with chlorine spraying have led public health authorities to revise existing guidance. The World Health Organization currently recommends wiping as the preferred chlorine-based surface disinfection method. This policy revision was based on very low certainty evidence, and quantitative data directly comparing

Chlorine Gas as a Lewis Acid-Base Probe for Molten Salts of Divalent Metal Ions.

In the context of energy applications for salts and, more specifically, in the case of molten salt reactors, the solvation of corrosion species, the nature and behavior of radiation-produced excess electrons, transient radicals, and molecular gas species all depend on the Lewis acid-base behavior of the constituent salt melt. Speciation of dissolved species and their transport properties are also influenced by the ability of the melt to form networks. This article focuses on the structural properties of melts composed of alkaline earth metal ions coupled with the Cl- anion, and the quantum mec

The Efficiencies and Products of Dilute Methane Oxidation in a Chlorine Radical Photoreactor.

A potential approach for mitigating the climate impact of hard-to-abate, dilute (less than 1000 ppm; ppm) methane (CH4) is gas-phase advanced oxidation (GPAO). Here, we present experimental results from a benchtop GPAO reactor oxidizing CH4 with chlorine radicals (Cl·) produced from the photolysis of chlorine gas (Cl2), a process we term "Cl2-GPAO." We find that at CH4 concentrations from 2 to 90 ppm, supplying Cl2 in a ratio of 1:1 with CH4 uses photogenerated Cl· efficiently, with 3 Cl· photogenerated for each CH4 oxidized with only 20% of Cl· recombining to Cl2. When more Cl2 is added, the

A triboelectric radical generation route to chlorine disinfectants from brine.

Contact electrification (CE), one of the earliest documented physical phenomena, has traditionally been associated with triboelectric charging but rarely considered as a driver of chemical transformations. Here we show that CE generates radicals at solid-liquid interfaces, establishing contact-electro-chemistry (CE-Chemistry) as a metal-catalyst-free route that uses ambient mechanical energy. Ultrasonically driven contact-separation of fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) particulates in brine generates hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and chlorine radicals (•Cl), forming active chlorine [hypochlorous

A Dual GC-MS and LC-MS/MS Analytical Strategy for Evaluating Free Chlorine Toxicity in Aqueous Samples.

RATIONALE: Chlorine gas is a highly toxic industrial chemical that poses a significant risk in accidental releases and deliberate terrorist attacks. Reliable analytical methods for the determination of chlorine in aqueous samples are therefore required for forensic and environmental investigations. This study aimed to develop a rapid and selective mass spectrometry-based method for chlorine determination following derivatization. METHODS: Chlorine in aqueous samples was derivatized with methyl 2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)acetate (MTMPA) at 50°C for 15 min, yielding methyl 2-(2-chloro-3,4,5-trim

Separation and purification of bismuth from bismuth-lead alloy based on methanesulfonic acid system.

The traditional chloride-based treatment of bismuth-lead (Bi-Pb) alloys faces serious challenges, such as low separation efficiency of valuable metals and chlorine gas volatilization. To overcome these limitations, a novel process employing a methanesulfonic acid (MSA) system was developed for Bi extraction from lead smelting by-products. The process involves four main steps: pretreatment, oxidative leaching, purification, and electrowinning. During pretreatment, tellurium (Te) was selectively separated, producing Te-rich slag and water-quenched Bi-Pb alloy slag. Under optimal conditions, incl

Industrial Chlorine Gas Leak: Combined Ocular and Respiratory Injury in 2 Patients - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Even though chlorine gas accidents are rarely seen, when an individual comes into contact with the gas, it can still cause considerable injury, particularly to the eyes and the airways. Chlorine is a strongly irritating and toxic gas, instantly recognizable by its sharp, suffocating odor and yellow-green color. It is widely used in industrial work and water purification, and has also been employed in certain conflict situations [Proc Am Thorac Soc. 2010;7(4):257-63 and Ann Occup Environ Med. 2014;26:29]. The extent of harm caused by chlorine inhalation is largely determined by it

Chlorine inhalation-induced ARDS treated with noninvasive ventilation and awake prone positioning: a case report.

Chlorine-containing disinfectants are widely used as household cleaning agents and in swimming pools and industrial settings. Accidents involving these disinfectants are an important public health concern. Exposure to high chlorine concentrations can induce acute chlorine toxicity, with acute poisoning from chlorine gas primarily affecting the respiratory system and causing irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, and occasionally the skin. Significant exposure may result in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which carries a risk of mortality. This report describes the case of a 76-y

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Boosting selective chlorine evolution reaction: Impact of Ag doping in RuO2 electrocatalysts.

The chlor-alkali process is critical to the modern chemical industry because of the wide utilization of chlorine gas (Cl2). More than 95 % of global Cl2 production relies on electrocatalytic chlorine evolution reaction (CER) through chlor-alkali electrolysis. The RuO2 electrocatalyst serves as the main active component widely used in commercial applications. However, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) generally competes with CER electrocatalysts at RuO2 electrocatalyst owing to the intrinsically scaling reaction energy barrier of *OCl and *OOH intermediates, leading to decreased CER selectivity,
