Workers involved in the production of pentachlorophenol (PCP) may be exposed to one of its contaminants, hexachlorobenzene (HCB). PCP is produced commercially in the USA by direct chlorination of phenol with chlorine gas in the presence of a catalyst at gradually rising temperatures up to 200 degrees C. Other contaminants formed in PCP production are isomers of hexa-, hepta- and octachlorodibenzo-para-dioxin and isomers of tetra-, penta-, hexa-, hepta- and octachlorodibenzofuran. This paper presents the analytical results of personal breathing-zone, area-air and surface-wipe samples collected

Chlorine and chlorine dioxide (ClO2), common disinfecting and bleaching chemicals used in the food industry, are potent oxidizing and chlorinating agents. Unfortunately, little is known about the nature of the reactions of chlorine with organic food constituents. This presentation reviews published information concerning the reactions of chlorine gas (Cl2[g]), aqueous chlorine, and ClO2 with model food compounds, the fate of chlorine during the chlorination of specific food products, and the potential toxicity of the reaction products. Fatty acids and their methyl esters react with chlorine wi

Chlorine gas, spreading from a train derailment, caused the deaths of 8 persons and the hospitalization of 23 with sublethal respiratory injuries. Twenty-five others had at least one sign of lower respiratory abnormality but were not hospitalized. One hundred thirteen who were examined for gas effects in the forty-eight hours after exposure, including 20 of 23 of those hospitalized and 21 of 25 of those not hospitalized but with respiratory abnormality, participated in follow-up studies. Probability of admission to hospital was related to distance from the spill, but by 3 wk after exposure the

In an industrial accident, 19 previously healthy workers were briefly exposed to high concentrations of chlorine gas. Pulmonary function tests were done at intervals for about two years but complete follow-up data were available in only 11 subjects. Immediately following the exposure, airway obstruction was detected in 10 of 19 patients; 700 days later this was found in only 3 of 11 patients. Two of these three patients had a history of smoking, however. The mean residual volume was 141% +/- 97 (mean +/- standard error of the mean) on day 1. In subsequent follow-up studies, the residual volume

Chlorine gas inhalation is usually accompanied by pulmonary toxicity and hypoxemia; the associated acidemia, when present, has been attributed to lactic acidosis. This case report describes the development of hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis following accidental chlorine gas exposure. The mechanism postulated for the production of this acidosis is the absorption of hydrochloric acid following the reaction of chlorine gas with tissue water. This may be the first case of chlorine toxicity in which the mechanism of the acidosis has been determined.

Hypochlorite-containing disinfectants or bleaching fluids, if inhaled, may lead to life-threatening poisoning (56% of moderately severe cases, 5% of severe cases) through the immediate liberation of chlorine gas, if they are used together with another cleansing fluid which is very acid. A rough estimate suggests that there must be about 700 cases of such poisonings per year in the Federal Republic of Germany. The characteristic symptom is a respiratory distress syndrome when the liberated chlorine gas is inhaled. Toxic pulmonary oedema and cardiovascular failure can occur if the poisoning take

This study was performed to evaluate the temperature, pH change, and electrolysis products at the anode during transcatheter electrocoagulation (TCEC). Stainless steel and platinum anodes insulated by standard angiographic catheters were placed in renal dialysis tubing. The tubing, filled with either saline solution or plasma, was placed in a water bath (25 degrees C) containing a cathode. Temperature was recorded at the tip of the anode, placed in saline solution, using 15 ma for 20 minutes (n = 5 for each wire and current). pH was measured during applications of 15, 30, and 60 ma for 20 minu

Following acute exposure to chlorine gas, 18 asymptomatic subjects were evaluated for early pulmonary dysfunction. Airway obstruction was evident in all exposed individuals immediately after chlorine exposure. The severity, course of the obstructive defect, and clinical picture correlated with the chief complaint on admission. The obstructive abnormalities resolved within 1 wk after exposure to chlorine in 12 subjects whose chief complaint was cough. A slower resolution of the physiologic changes, clinical signs, and symptoms was noted in 6 subjects whose initial chief complaint was dyspnea. I

Eight healthy unacclimated volunteers were exposed to chlorine gas in concentrations of 0.5 or 1 ppm, and several pulmonary function measurements were made. Comparisons were made by paired t test between the percent change from base-line values obtained at various times after chlorine exposure and the percent change from base line at analogous times after a sham exposure. With the sham vs. 0.5-ppm exposure, there were trivial changes observed. Total lung capacity (TLC) was lower before 0.5-ppm exposure than before sham exposure, and the percent decrease in carbon dioxide pulmonary diffusing ca

The goal of this study is to appreciate the early and late sequelae caused by Chlorine Gas. 186 exposed patients have been admitted to our unit since 1962-119 had functional respiratory explorations (FRE) with an analysis of blood gases, 79 underwent a study of carbon monoxide transfer. The results are in accordance with the literature for example 25% of the CO transfer test were pathological. 56 occupationally exposed subjects having had at least three acute episodes of exposure have been compared to 197 control subjects (groups were classed in function of age, tobacco intake, and pulmonary a

Male Swiss-Webster mice and Fischer-344 rats were exposed to chlorine gas at their respective RD50 concentrations (ca. 9 to 11 ppm). The RD50 concentration is that concentration which reduces respiratory rate by 50%. The exposures were carried out for 6 hr per day for 1, 3, or 5 days, and the animals were killed immediately at the end of the last exposure. The nasal passages were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. Lesions were observed in all exposed groups and were of similar severity and character in rats and mice. The most severe changes were found in the olfactory mucosa o

Four young healthy adults were studied physiologically after accidental inhalation of chlorine gas. All patients were symptomatic with cough, tightness in the chest, and shortness of breath. All had restrictive ventilatory defect with impaired diffusing capacity. There was evidence of some obstruction in small airways. There was inconsistent evidence of obstruction in large airways. All lung function impairment was temporary and cleared entirely within one month. There was no residual lung damage.

A new method, employing the mild oxidant N-bromosuccinimide, for the iodination of proteins for radioimmunoassay is described. Human prolactin, follicle-stimulating, luteinising, thyroid-stimulating, and growth hormones were iodinated with 125I by this method to specific activities up to 136 muCi/microgram. Incorporation of iodine ranged from 67% to 83% using 2 microgram hormone, 200 muCi Na125I, 0.5 nmol oxidant, and a reaction time of 15s. In comparative studies in immunological activity after iodination by this method was equal to, or greater than that by the chlorine gas, Iodo-Gen, or chlo

Propranolol (Inderal; 1) is extensively metabolized in man. Metabolites of interest pharmacologically include ring-hydroxylated propranolols (1a-g). In order to identify these ring-oxidized products and to study the effect of hydroxyl position on biological activity, we have synthesized all seven isomers. With the exception of 1b and 1g, the desired compounds were prepared by alkylation of the respective methoxy-1-naphthols with epichlorohydrin and reaction of the resulting epoxide with isopropylamine. Cleavage og the methyl group in fused pyridine hydrochloride afforded 1a,c-f. 1g was prepare

The patient described had myasthenia gravis manifested by laryngeal stridor after accidental exposure to chlorine gas. The diagnosis was established by correction of abnormal pulmonary function after injection of edrophonium chloride. The patient subsequently had generalized myasthenia gravis. The autoimmune injury causing this disease may have been the chlorine gas exposure, since the temporal relationship is very strong and chlorine is important in the modulation of acetylcholine synthesis.

Changes in flow cytometric measurement of DNA content can result from electrolytic chemical degradation of mithramycin, ethidium bromide, and propidium iodide during simultaneous measurement of electronic cell volume. Bench electrolysis also degrades these fluorochromes without changing the quantum yields, even when they are complexed to DNA. In the flow cytometer, electrolytic production of chlorine at the anode is the probable cause of this degradation, since exposure of these fluorochromes to chlorine gas produces the same effect. It is therefore advisable to measure the DNA content distrib

Chlorine oxidants (chlorine gas, sodium hypochlorite, and calcium hypochlorite) are used as biocides to control fouling in seawater cooled power generating plants and to kill pathogens in sewage effluents entering estuarine waters. Organisms killed include algae, fungi, bacteria, barnacles, oysters, and clams. Use of these chemicals in saline waters results in the formation of halogenated by-products (JOHANNESSON 1958, DUURSAM & PARSI 1976, DOVE 1973). BEAN et al, (1978), in a study of chlorinated seawater, identified eighteen organic compounds generated by chlorination. Due to rapid substitut

The heavy use of chlorine gas in industry and water purification poses the constant threat of mass gas exposure. In a recent experience with a chlorine gas disaster involving over 100 patients, 64, including six subsequently requiring admission, were treated in the main emergency unit facility. The remainder were triaged to a safe area away from the emergency unit with instructions for symptomatic treatment. Injuries were limited to four organ systems: pulmonary, gastrointestinal, ophthalmic, and cutaneous. Current treatment methods are compared with those in the literature and a protocol for
