[Hydrotherapy pools, microbiological and chemical results (author's transl)].

The results of microbiological and chemical examinations of water samples collected from hydrotherapy pools for non incontinent patients proved that the officially agreed parameters for the surveillance of public swimming pools (Osterr. Bäderhygiene-Gesetz and Verordnung) have to be extended to meet the requirements of epidemiology. Similarly the requirements for treatment and operating conditions of those waters should be more rigorous. Minimal requirements for the treatment of water in hydrotherapy pools are recommended. The results of the study indicated also that the microbicide action of

Pulmonary injury following exposure to chlorine gas. Possible beneficial effects of steroid treatment.

Two sisters were exposed to chlorine gas in toxic quantities in the same room of their home during an industrial accident. One was hospitalized and treated with corticosteroids and oxygen therapy, while the other received evaluation in the emergency room, and brief oxygen therapy and was released without corticosteroid therapy. Pulmonary physiologic studies have been performed on both patients at intervals following the exposure. The treated patient was stable, with normal results on studies of pulmonary function at the end of two years, while the sibling not treated with corticosteroids had d

A field study of some swimming-pool waters with regard to bacteria, available chlorine and redox potential.

The waters of one indoor bath and three outdoor baths were examined once an hour during 3 days (bath 1) or 6 days, for available chlorine, redox potential, permanganate number, ammonium, nitrate and total nitrogen, total bacterial count at 22 degrees C., total bacterial count at 37 degrees C. and faecal coliform bacteria. The weather, number of swimmers and the chlorine gas addition were continuously registered, and the pH was checked a few times at each bath. In bath 1, an indoor pool with aluminium sulphate precipitation about once a week and with sand filters back-washed every 2 days, less

Energy Distribution Among Reaction Products. III: The Method of Measured Relaxation Applied to H + Cl(2).

The method of measured relaxation is described for the determination of initial vibrational energy distribution in the products of exothermic reaction. Hydrogen atoms coming from an orifice were diffused into flowing chlorine gas. Measurements were made of the resultant ir chemiluminescence at successive points along the line of flow. The concurrent processes of reaction, diffusion, flow, radiation, and deactivation were analyzed in some detail on a computer. A variety of relaxation models were used in an attempt to place limits on k(upsilon), the rate constant for reaction to form HCl in spec

Respiratory effects of chlorine gas.

Beach, F. X. M., Sherwood Jones, E., and Scarrow, G. D. (1969).Brit. J. industr. Med.,26, 231-236. Respiratory effects of chlorine gas. Seven chemical workers who were accidentally exposed to chlorine gas in separate accidents were investigated. The usual symptoms were cough, dyspnoea, and chest pains, the symptoms starting within 10 minutes of exposure and lasting two to eight days. Chest radiographs showed congestion, consolidation, and nodules; lung oedema was also present in a severe case. These changes usually cleared within one week but in the severe case persisted for 10 weeks. Three pa

Comparison of chlorine, bromine, iodine as disinfectants for swimming pool water.

Studies on the germicidal activity of chlorine, bromine, and iodine were made by use of the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists official first action method for determining effectiveness of swimming pool water disinfectants. In this procedure, 0.3 ppm of available chlorine as chlorine gas has activity equivalent to 0.6 ppm of available chlorine in the buffered sodium hypochlorite control when Escherichia coli is used as the test organism. With Streptococcus faecalis as the test organism, 0.45 ppm of available chlorine as gaseous chlorine gives activity equivalent to the control. Liqu
