Determination of biomarkers of chlorine exposure from biological samples: a review of analysis techniques.

Introduction: Chlorine gas can be toxic when inhaled or absorbed at high concentrations through the skin. It can cause pulmonary edema, pulmonary inflammation, respiratory failure, and potentially death. Monitoring chlorine exposure helps in determining treatment regimens and may inform safeguards, such as personal protective equipment and ventilation systems. Therefore, verification of chlorine exposure is crucial to protecting human health. This has led to identification of multiple biomarkers of Cl2 exposure with associated innovations in methods of analysis to monitor these markers. Materi

Quantitative assessment of chlorine gas inhalation injury based on endoscopic OCT and spectral encoded interferometric microscope imaging with deep learning.

Chlorine exposure can cause severe airway injuries. While the acute effects of chlorine inhalation are well-documented, the structural changes resulting from the post-acute, high-level chlorine exposure remain less understood. Airway sloughing is one of the standards for doctors to evaluate the lung function. Here, we report the application of a high-resolution swept-source optical coherence tomography system to investigate the progression of injury based on airway sloughing evaluation in a chlorine inhalation rabbit model. This system employs a 1.2 mm diameter flexible fiberoptic endoscopic p

Selective Extraction of Valuable and Critical Metals in Cassiterite Concentrate by Dry Chlorination, Part I: Thermodynamic and Modelling Perspective.

The chlorination of oxides of major concern in cassiterite concentrate with various chlorinating agents is investigated in light of their thermodynamic feasibilities to extract and recover their valuable metal components. Mechanisms responsible for the processes and their Gibbs free energy changes as a function of temperature to selectively separate and/or recover the metal(s) of interest and unwanted ones as their metallic chlorides are identified. Attention is given to gaseous (Cl2 and Cl2 + CO mixture) and solid (CaCl2 and MgCl2) chlorine sources, from which Cl2 + CO shows no reaction selec

Double-Shell Co3O4 with Rich Surface Octahedron Oxygen Vacancies for High-Selectivity Electrocatalytic Chlorine Evolution.

The development of non-noble-metal-based chlorine evolution reaction (CER) catalysts with excellent activity, kinetics, and selectivity is urgently needed but still remains a major challenge. In this study, a morphology self-evolving and surface octahedron oxygen-vacancy-generating strategy is applied at double-shell nanospheres to obtain the target hierarchical double-shell Co3O4 nanospheres with abundant surface oxygen vacancies (DS-Co3O4-OVs). The DS-Co3O4-OVs display an overpotential of only 52 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in which an excellent chlorine selectivity of 98.9-9

Chlorine-Induced Lung Injury From Hot Tub Exposure.

Chlorine, a dense and irritating gas used in pool disinfection, can cause severe respiratory issues, including airway damage, alveolar injury, pulmonary edema, and chronic conditions such as bronchiolitis obliterans. This case study describes a patient initially thought to have hot tub lung (HTL) due to symptoms, hot tub use, and imaging findings. However, negative Mycobacterium tests and significant chlorine exposure led to a revised diagnosis of chlorine-induced lung injury. The diagnosis was further supported by the patient's clinical improvement and prior normal lung scans.

Ultrafast Synthesis of IrB1.15 Nanocrystals for Efficient Chlorine and Hydrogen Evolution Reactions in Saline Water.

The production of storable hydrogen fuel through water electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources such as solar, marine, geothermal, and wind energy presents a promising pathway toward achieving energy sustainability. Nevertheless, state-of-the-art electrolysis requires support from ancillary processes which often incur financial and energy costs. Developing electrolysers capable of directly operating with water that contains impurities can circumvent these processes. Herein, we demonstrate the efficient and durable electrolysis of saline water to produce chlorine gas (Cl2) and hydrogen

Potential environmental impact of the chlorine-containing disinfectants usage during the COVID-19.

Chlorine radicals (Cl) play a crucial role in atmospheric chemistry. The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic significantly increased the use of chlorine-containing disinfectants in China, leading to enhanced emissions of chlorine gas (Cl2) and hypochlorous acid (HOCl). In this study, we use the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model with updated chlorine chemistry to evaluate the potential air quality impact of chlorine emissions from disinfectant usage during February 2020, a month with a large outbreak of COVID-19 in mainland China. Results indicate that during the pandemic,

The Rise of Trichlorides Enabling an Improved Chlorine Technology.

Chlorine plays a central role for the industrial production of numerous materials with global relevance. More recently, polychlorides have been evolved from an area of academic interest to a research topic with enormous industrial potential. In this minireview, the value of trichlorides for chlorine storage and chlorination reactions are outlined. Particularly, the inexpensive ionic liquid [NEt3 Me][Cl3 ] shows a similar and sometimes even advantageous reactivity compared to chlorine gas, while offering a superior safety profile. Used as a chlorine storage, [NEt3 Me][Cl3 ] could help to overco

Characterization of N-Acetyl Cysteine Adducts with Exogenous and Neutrophil-Derived 2-Chlorofatty Aldehyde.

Hypochlorous acid is produced by leukocyte myeloperoxidase activity. 2-Chlorofatty aldehydes (2-ClFALDs) are formed when hypochlorous acid attacks the plasma membrane phospholipid plasmalogen molecular subclass and are thus produced following leukocyte activation as well as in the lungs of mice exposed to chlorine gas. The biological role of 2-ClFALD is largely unknown. Recently, we used an alkyne analog (2-ClHDyA) of the 2-ClFALD molecular species, 2-chlorohexadecanal (2-ClHDA), to identify proteins covalently modified by 2-ClHDyA in endothelial cells and epithelial cells. Here, we demonstrat

Ophthalmic Manifestations of Chlorine Gas Exposure: What Do We Know So Far?

Chlorine gas is a hazardous substance that can cause severe health effects when inhaled or exposed to the skin. It is an odorless, colorless gas in many industrial and manufacturing settings and conflict areas. While exposure to chlorine gas is generally limited to the workplace and public areas, there are instances in which people may be exposed to high levels of chlorine gas for a short period of time due to spills, mishaps on the road or railroads, or other tragedies. In addition to the general health effects of chlorine gas, this essay will focus on the effects of chlorine gas on the eyes.

Electrosynthesis of chlorine from seawater-like solution through single-atom catalysts.

The chlor-alkali process plays an essential and irreplaceable role in the modern chemical industry due to the wide-ranging applications of chlorine gas. However, the large overpotential and low selectivity of current chlorine evolution reaction (CER) electrocatalysts result in significant energy consumption during chlorine production. Herein, we report a highly active oxygen-coordinated ruthenium single-atom catalyst for the electrosynthesis of chlorine in seawater-like solutions. As a result, the as-prepared single-atom catalyst with Ru-O4 moiety (Ru-O4 SAM) exhibits an overpotential of only

Exposure risk and emergency evacuation modeling of toxic gas leakage in urban areas under the influence of multiple meteorological factors.

Frequent toxic gas leakage accidents in urban environments cannot be timely controlled and often cause great harm due to the many factors affecting gas diffusion. In this study, based on the coupling method of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) and the open source OpenFOAM software platform, the chlorine gas diffusion process at different temperatures, wind speeds, and wind directions in a chemical laboratory and nearby urban areas in Beijing was studied numerically. A dose-response model was used to calculate chlorine lethality and assess exposure risk at the pedestrian level. T

Sugarcane Bagasse Ash as an Alternative Source of Silicon Dioxide in Sodium Silicate Synthesis.

To reduce the environmental impacts from sodium silicate synthesis, a ceramic method was suggested, with sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) as the source of silicon dioxide and sodium carbonate. Although the production of sodium silicate is carried out on a large scale, it should be noted that its process requires temperatures above 1000 °C; it also requires the use of highly corrosive agents such as sodium hydroxide and chlorine gas to neutralize the remaining sodium hydroxide. In the present study, the synthesis temperatures were reduced to 800 °C with a reaction time of 3 h by pressing equimolar
