CO2-broken Ti-O bonds in the TiO6 octahedron of CaTiO3 for greatly enhanced room-temperature ferromagnetism.

Preparation of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic nanomaterials and the study of their magnetic sources are crucial for the exploration of new materials with multiple applications. Herein, two-dimensional room-temperature ferromagnetic (FM) CaTiO3 nanosheets are successfully constructed with the assistance of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC CO2). In this process, the SC CO2-induced strain effect can lead to lattice expansion and introduction of O vacancies. More importantly, experimentally it can be found out that the breakage of the Ti-O2 bond by CO2 directly results in the equatorial plane

Chloride Interferences in Wet Chemical Oxidation Measurements: Plausible Mechanisms and Implications.

Wet chemical oxidation (WCO) methods measure total organic carbon (TOC) in aqueous solutions through the formation and detection of carbon dioxide (CO2). Prior research documents chloride (Cl-) interference during WCO. However, the mechanism that determines WCO interference is not established. We investigate WCO and find that formic acid exhibits TOC recovery (89-108%) within measurement uncertainty in the presence of Cl-, while acetic acid recovery is substantially reduced (3-67%). We postulate that chlorine radical (•Cl) formation during WCO alters oxidation pathways for organic compounds wi

Global Groundwater Carbon Mass Flux and the Myth of Atmospheric Weathering.

Our recent steady-state mass-balance modeling suggests that most global carbonic-acid weathering of silicate rocks occurs in the vadose zone of aquifer systems not on the surface by atmospheric CO2. That is, the weathering solute flux is nearly equal to the total global continental riverine carbon flux, signifying little atmospheric weathering by carbonic acid. This finding challenges previous carbon models that utilize silicate weathering as a control of atmospheric CO2 levels. A robust analysis utilizing global estimates of groundwater carbon concentration generated by a geospatial machine l

Equipartitioning of Molecular Degrees of Freedom in MD Simulations of Gaseous Systems via an Advanced Thermostatization Strategy.

This work introduces a dedicated thermostatization strategy for molecular dynamics simulations of gaseous systems. The proposed thermostat is based on the stochastic canonical velocity rescaling approach by Bussi and co-workers and is capable of ensuring an equal distribution of the kinetic energy among the translational, rotational, and vibrational degrees of freedom. The outlined framework ensures the correct treatment of the kinetic energy in gaseous systems, which is typically not the case in standard approaches due to the limited number of collisions between particles associated with a la

The effect of climate change on economic growth in European countries: an empirical evidence from Panel ARDL approach.

This paper examined the impact of climate change on economic growth using panel data from 20 European countries during the period 1990-2020 and the estimation techniques of cointegration and the ARDL model. The empirical results reveal that precipitation; labour force and CO2 emissions have a positive effect on long-term economic growth in sample countries. However, temperature, foreign direct investment, and urbanization have a negative effect on growth over the same period. Therefore, our study highlights the complex links between climate, demographic, and economic developments in European c

Enhancing carbon enrichment by metal-organic cage to improve the electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction performance of silver-based catalyst.

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added chemicals provide an alternative technology for achieving carbon neutrality. Limited mass transfer of CO2 in aqueous electrolyte and unsatisfied catalytic activity are the major determinants that inhibit the CO2 conversion at industrial current density level. Herein, an electroreduction-generated metallic Ag atomic clusters supported on metal organic cage (Ag AC/MOC) electrocatalyst is reported to improve the enrichment of inorganic carbon species over catalytic sites for efficient CO2 electroreduction. Balancing methane emission and alkalinity conservation: Insights from mineral amendments in coastal sediments.

With global climate warming and ocean acidification, mineral amendments in coastal areas have emerged as a promising strategy to bolster carbon sinks and alkalinity. However, most research has predominantly focused on carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption, with limited exploration of methane (CH4) reduction despite its more potent greenhouse effect. To address this gap, our study conducted a microcosm manipulative experiment employing coastal wetlands sediments to elucidate the regulatory effects of various mineral amendments on greenhouse gas emissions (including CO2 and CH4) and seawater alkalinit

Effect of microplastics on soil greenhouse gas emissions: A global meta-analysis study.

Microplastics (MPs) emerged as a critical global pollutant, yet their effects on soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remain uncertain. This meta-analysis evaluates the effects of MPs exposure on GHG emissions and identifies key influencing factors. Regardless of any influencing factors, MPs exposure decreased N2O emissions by 28.5 %, while increased CO2 and CH4 emissions by 0.07 % and 28.6 %, respectively. However, these changes were statistically insignificant. The factors such as MPs concentration, shape, and type, initial soil type and pH, and the presence of additional additive were identi

Regeneration of PFAS-laden granular activated carbon by modified supercritical CO2 extraction.

Granular activated carbon (GAC) is widely used to treat contaminated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) waste streams, resulting in the accumulation of large quantities of spent GAC that need to be landfilled or regenerated. A novel modified supercritical CO2 (scCO2) extraction for regeneration of spent GAC is developed. With the addition of organic solvents and acid modifiers, the procedure yielded >99% perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) desorption after a 60-min treatment in a continuous flow reactor. The mild extraction conditions at T ∼100 °C do not trigger the formation of volatile org

Achieving synergistic enhancement in the anaerobic digestion of corn straw by (CH4 + CO2) nanobubbles in conjunction with optimized particle sizes.

Nanobubbles (NBs) technology has been proven to promote methane production from anaerobic digestion (AD). In this study, the synergistic effects of (CH4 + CO2)-nanobubble water ((CH4 + CO2)-NBW) combined with varying particle sizes of corn straw on the AD were investigated. As findings, adding (CH4 + CO2)-NBW effectively promoted the methane production from AD of corn straw with different particle sizes. The maximum cumulative methane yield (186.42 mL/ g-volatile solids) was achieved in Group a with the addition of (CH4 + CO2)-NBW, representing a 16.89 % increase compared to the control. Furth

Birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) Encroachment Alters Contribution of Plant Functional Groups to Ecosystem Carbon Cycling in a Rewetted Bog.

Rewetted bogs with high water levels (WL) and mire-specific vegetation are crucial carbon (C) sinks, but their function might be threatened by tree encroachment, a phenomenon widespread in the northern hemisphere that often coincides with low WL. This might impact C cycling both at the ecosystem and microform scale in multiple ways, but so far, data are lacking. We established two sites in the same former peat extraction area, one showing permanently high WL and mire-specific vegetation (open site, OS), while the other one has more fluctuating WL and a dense birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) popu

Is the air-breathing organ a significant route for CO2 excretion during aquatic hypercapnia in the pirarucu, Arapaima gigas?

The pirarucu is one of the very few obligate air-breathing fish, employing a gigantic, highly vascularized air-breathing organ (ABO). Traditionally, the ABO is thought to serve mainly for O2 uptake (ṀO2), with the gills providing the major route for excretion of CO2 (ṀCO2) and N-waste. However, under aquatic hypercapnia, a common occurrence in its natural environment, branchial ṀCO2 to the water may become impaired. Under these conditions, does the ABO become an important route of ṀCO2 excretion to the air? We have answered this question by measuring ṀCO2 and ṀO2 in both air and water phases,

Effectiveness of Ventilation via an Endotracheal Tube in Pharynx Versus a Facemask in Patients With Potentially Difficult Airway: A Randomized, Crossover, and Blind Trial.

BACKGROUND: The difficult airway is frequently encountered across many scenarios. The extreme form is a "cannot intubate and cannot oxygenate" scenario, which lacks a reliable rescue technique. Previous case reports or studies with small sample sizes indicate the feasibility and efficiency of an endotracheal tube in the pharynx (TTIP) to ventilate patients. We hypothesize that ventilation via TTIP is an effective rescue technique for failed mask ventilation. METHOD: One hundred forty-seven patients with potentially difficult airways were randomly assigned to the sequence (Tube first) of tube

Associations of intraoperative end-tidal CO2 levels with postoperative outcome-secondary analysis of a worldwide observational study.

BACKGROUND: Patients receiving intraoperative ventilation during general anesthesia often have low end-tidal CO2 (etCO2). We examined the association of intraoperative etCO2 levels with the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in a conveniently-sized international, prospective study named 'Local ASsessment of Ventilatory management during General Anesthesia for Surgery' (LAS VEGAS). METHODS: Patients at high risk of PPCs were categorized as 'low etCO2' or 'normal to high etCO2' patients, using a cut-off of 35 mmHg. The primary endpoint was a composite of previously defin

How to develop nature-based solutions for revegetation on abandoned farmland in the Loess Plateau of China?

Adequate revegetation of abandoned farmland acts as a defence against desertification and soil loss, and can help remove carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, thereby playing an important role in regulating regional climate change. Legume, a nitrogen-fixation species, which could effectively improve vegetation coverage to control soil erosion, was widely used for revegetation. However, the dynamics of soil and plant development after legume introduction on abandoned farmland remain unclear. A 16-year in situ experiment including three treatments, natural abandonment (fallow), planting of alfalfa (

Ecological and environmental effects of global photovoltaic power plants: A meta-analysis.

The construction of photovoltaic power plants (PVPPs) globally not only mitigates climate change but also exerts various impacts on terrestrial ecosystems. A comprehensive exploration of the intensity of PVPPs on the ecological environmental elements of terrestrial ecosystems, as well as their regulatory mechanisms, is an urgent scientific issue that must be addressed within the context of carbon balance. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the soil, climate, and biological effects of PVPPs construction, as well as changes in ecosystem CO2 fluxes. Our analysis synthesize

Minimum carbon dioxide is a key predictor of the respiratory health of pigs in climate-controlled housing systems.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory disease is an economically important disease in the swine industry. Housing air quality control is crucial for maintaining the respiratory health of pigs. However, maintaining air quality is a limitation of current housing systems. This study evaluated the growth and health parameters of pigs raised under different environmental conditions and identified key environmental variables that determine respiratory health. Eighty (Largewhite × Landrace) × Duroc crossed growing pigs (31.71 ± 0.53 kg) were equally distributed into two identical climate-controlled houses with dis

Defect Engineering of Metal-Based Atomically Thin Materials for Catalyzing Small-Molecule Conversion Reactions.

Recently, metal-based atomically thin materials (M-ATMs) have experienced rapid development due to their large specific surface areas, abundant electrochemically accessible sites, attractive surface chemistry, and strong in-plane chemical bonds. These characteristics make them highly desirable for energy-related conversion reactions. However, the insufficient active sites and slow reaction kinetics leading to unsatisfactory electrocatalytic performance limited their commercial application. To address these issues, defect engineering of M-ATMs has emerged to increase the active sites, modify th
