Distribution and frequency of Vkorc1 polymorphisms in house mice and Norway rats in the northeastern United States.

BACKGROUND: Modern commensal rodent pest control often relies on anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs), yet the development of resistance driven by mutations in the Vkorc1 gene has become a growing challenge in rodent management. Surveying the mutations in the Vkorc1 gene in rodents is essential to understanding the rodenticide resistance profile and its impacts on the environment. This study aimed to assess the distribution and frequency of Vkorc1 polymorphisms in house mice and Norway rats in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC, USA. RESULTS: A total of 147 house mice (Mus mus

Sulfonamide in agricultural pest management: past and recent prospects.

The sulfonamide moiety (-SO2NH-) is a structurally versatile motif in agrochemical discovery. It can engage in hydrogen bonding, modulate molecular polarity and acidity, and act as a bioisostere or linking fragment in ligand design. Inspired by the mechanism of sulfonamide antibiotics, researchers have developed a range of agrochemicals active against plant pathogens and weeds. However, the development of sulfonamide-based agrochemicals has been unbalanced: commercial products are mainly concentrated in herbicides and some fungicides, whereas research on insecticides, antiviral and plant-growt

Chemically induced cardiotoxicity: Role of voltage dependent ion channels.

Chemicals pervade human environments, with> 350,000 synthetic compounds driving unintentional exposures and pollution-linked deaths exceeding those from infectious diseases or violence. This review discusses the mechanisms of chemically induced cardiotoxicity (including pesticides, pollutants, heavy metals, and chemotherapeutics), emphasizing modulation of voltage-gated ion channels in cardiomyocytes, which disrupts action potential (AP) dynamics, excitation-contraction coupling (ECC), and predisposes to arrhythmogenesis. Key currents, sodium (INa), calcium (ICaL, ICaT), and potassium (Ito, IK

Recent Advances in Sulfur-Based Pesticides: Fungicidal, Antiviral, Insecticidal, and Herbicidal Applications.

Sulfur plays a crucial role in agricultural chemistry, not only as an essential plant nutrient, but also as a key structural element in pesticide design. This review summarizes the development and application of sulfur-containing pesticides as fungicides, antiviral agents, insecticides, and herbicides, with particular emphasis on their structural characteristics and mechanisms of action. In fungicides, sulfides can interfere with fungal energy metabolism and exhibit broadspectrum fungicidal activity. In antiviral agents, some sulfur-containing functional groups, such as dithioacetals and thiou

Toxic load at the top of the food chain: Eurasian Lynx exposed to anticoagulant rodenticides in Switzerland.

Wild mammals are widely exposed to anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). This was demonstrated for both rodent predators and carnivores eating mainly large prey such as wolf or Mountain lion. To date, only little information is available on the exposure of the Eurasian lynx to ARs, a top predator endangered in Western Europe. Here, we monitored the liver concentrations of ARs in 123 Eurasian lynxes collected during 2014-2022 in Switzerland, a country that hosts one of the main populations in this part of its range. Relations between AR concentrations and health indicators like iron deficiency, bod

Waterborne Toxicants for the Exotic Animal Patient.

Water can serve as a vector for distribution and exposure to both toxins and toxicants. Because water is essential for all species, water quality impacts the health of wildlife and animals under managed care. Waterborne toxicants and toxins in exotic species include heavy metals, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, algal blooms, nitrogenous wastes, and water treatment chemicals. Susceptibility varies by species, and mitigation typically requires supportive care and removal of the source of contamination.

Isomer-Dependent Pharmacokinetic Behavior and VKOR Interactions of Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides: An Integrated In Vivo-In Vitro-In Silico Investigation.

Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) were developed to overcome warfarin resistance in rodent populations; however, their prolonged hepatic retention has raised concerns regarding secondary poisoning of non-target wildlife. All major SGARs exist as cis-trans isomeric pairs, and differences in biological half-life between isomers have been reported, yet the molecular basis for such isomer-dependent pharmacokinetic behavior remains poorly understood. In this study, we conducted an integrated evaluation of cis and trans isomers of SGARs using in vivo, in vitro, and in silico appro

Postnatal exposure to current use pesticides and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children and adolescents: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the neurodevelopmental impacts of postnatal exposure to current-use pesticides (CUPs) remains fragmented. This systematic review synthesises the international epidemiological evidence linking chronic postnatal CUP exposure with neurocognitive (NC), neurobehavioural (NB), and neurological (N_) outcomes in children and adolescents. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 (PROSPERO-CRD42021258519), we searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, and EBSCOhost for epidemiological studies published between January 2010 and July 2025 assessing postnatal CUP exposure and NC, NB,

Differential prevalence of PFAS, PCBs and pesticides in liver of hunted game.

Free foraging game animals are constantly exposed to environmental pollutants and can therefore serve as bioindicators for these substances. However, they can also pose a health risk to humans if polluted meat of wild game animals enters the food chain. We analysed 219 potentially critical pollutants in 164 liver samples of hunted wild boar (Sus scrofa) and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) from north-eastern Germany. Overall, 24 pollutants were detected and 16 of them were detected quantitatively. PCBs, PFAS and rodenticides were more frequent and present in far higher concentrations in wild boa

Progress and Perspectives of Furanone Derivatives in Pesticide Chemistry.

Furanone and its derivatives, featuring five-membered oxygen-containing heterocyclic rings, offer broad-spectrum bioactivities and favorable environmental compatibility, making them valuable pharmaceutical and agrochemical agents. Although their pharmaceutical applications have been extensively reviewed, a comprehensive summary of their agrochemical uses is lacking. This review provides a concise overview of the synthetic approaches and structural modification strategies for furanones, systematically examines their structural diversity, and outlines their insecticidal, fungicidal, antiviral, h

Distribution and Evolutionary Signatures of a Broad-Spectrum Pesticide-Degrading Carboxylesterase TriS From Strain S113.

Ester-containing pesticides, such as diphenyl ether herbicides, aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicides, and strobilurin fungicides, are widely applied in agriculture, but their residues pose significant risks to ecosystems. Functional microorganisms can degrade ester-containing pesticides in the natural environment. However, the microbial mechanisms responsible for their degradation in soils remain unclear. A novel hydrolase gene triS from the strain S113 encoded a broadly active carboxylesterase that hydrolyzes a wide range of ester-containing pesticides. TriS exhibited a maximum sequence simila

Incorporating native South American aquatic species into acute Species Sensitivity Distributions: implications for pesticide risk assessment of lambda-cyhalothrin and ammonium glufosinate.

Agricultural intensification has increased pesticide inputs into freshwater ecosystems worldwide, yet pesticide risk assessments still rely largely on toxicity data from standard Northern Hemisphere model organisms. This may limit the biogeographical representativeness of acute SSD-derived hazard benchmarks. We evaluated the acute toxicity of lambda-cyhalothrin and ammonium glufosinate using three native Pampean freshwater species: Hyalella curvispina, Boana pulchella, and Cnesterodon decemmaculatus. Acute toxicity values (96-h LC50) were integrated into Species Sensitivity Distributions (SSDs

Pesticides, Environmental Contamination, and Public Health: A One Health Perspective.

Pesticides are chemicals used in the agricultural, industrial, and public health sectors to increase crop productivity, prevent plant diseases, and reduce pest-related hazards. They can be classified as herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and rodenticides based on the pests they target. Their active ingredients include organochlorines, organophosphorus compounds, carbamates, pyrethrins, and pyrethroids. Although the use of pesticides has provided significant benefits to humans, their widespread application has also led to the contamination of air, soil, water, and food systems. After applica

Brain metabolomics in an insect pollinator: impacts of CO2 and cold-induced anaesthesia alone and in combination with neonicotinoid exposure.

Characterizing the effect of pesticides on pollinators is essential in the strive to protect biodiversity while maintaining efficient food production. Metabolomics offers detailed insight into the physiological response to pesticides. The impact of pre-dissection and dissection methodology on the metabolic response remains largely unknown, as does their possible effect on the measured metabolic response to pesticide exposure. Three different pre-dissection treatments were evaluated in Eristalis tenax: carbon dioxide, ice or no anaesthesia. Brain dissections were conducted at room temperature o

Sludge compost: a double-edged sword for depleted soil restoration revealed by integrated multi-omics analysis.

The prospective use of sludge compost for restoring depleted soils requires balancing its agronomic benefits against potential ecological risks. This study employed an integrated metagenomic and metabolomic approach to evaluate the dose-dependent effects of sludge compost on soil properties, maize growth, and rhizosphere microbial communities. Results showed that moderate compost application (≤15% w/w) enhanced soil nutrient availability, promoted root development, and enriched beneficial microbial taxa (Streptomyces, Mesorhizobium, Flavisolibacter), while upregulating plant stress-response me
