Water flow velocity disturbances in biofilms are quite well understood, but the consequences for pesticide dissipation have yet to be addressed. We investigated the capacity of biofilms with different histories of hydrological disturbances [frequent flow velocity increase (FI), sporadic flow velocity increase (SI), and a control with constant flow velocity (C)] to dissipate a cocktail composed of herbicide (terbuthylazine), fungicide (tebuconazole), and insecticide (imidacloprid) molecules. Pesticide dissipation and bioaccumulation by biofilms were measured using two different exposure scenari

BACKGROUND: Pesticides play a crucial role in pest control; however, exposure remains high, particularly among smallholder farmers in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) with little access to pesticide safety training. This study aimed to provide comparative biomarker-based evidence from Latin America and Africa and identify actionable determinants of exposure to inform context-specific interventions and sustainable agricultural policies.
METHODS: We collected urine samples from 601 conventional and organic smallholder farmers in Zarcero County, Costa Rica, and Wakiso District, Uga

Current application levels of organic and nanoparticle-based pesticide formulations expose aquatic non-target organisms to complicated mixtures. Acute toxicity tests revealed unpredictable mixture effects of a copper hydroxide particle-based nanopesticide with commercial fungicide, herbicide and insecticide formulations, mediated by speciation of copper nanoparticles. Induction of oxidative stress is one of the suspected mechanisms of action of copper-based nanoparticles. As the first study to assess oxidative stress responses of antioxidant enzymes in daphnids after short-term exposure to mix

Protected Areas (PAs) provide crucial refuges for biodiversity and are essential for preserving natural habitats, supporting species survival, and providing ecosystem services such as water purification and soil conservation. However, their effectiveness may be compromised by external anthropogenic pressures, including pesticide contamination, a major threat, particularly to aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we examined the occurrence and spatial distribution of pesticides using epilithic biofilms as bioindicators within PAs of the Atlantic Forest and their surrounding landscapes. Our objecti

Intensive pesticide use drives antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in agriculture, yet the effects of specific practices remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the impact of dairy manure and agrochemicals (glyphosate, copper, streptomycin, and propiconazole) on the composition of culturable AMR bacteria (CARB), AMR genes (ARGs; n = 87), and the microbiome in a processing tomato field (n = 64 experimental plots). Glyphosate-treated plots harbored the lowest levels of CARB, but the highest prevalence of ARGs (especially tetA, tetB, OXA-50, and OXA-58) in the tomato leaves (P < 0.05). Manure-t

Shared enzymatic targets between azoles used in agriculture as fungicides and clinical antifungals are hypothesized to have led to the drift of resistant fungal isolates from field to clinic, reducing efficacy of azoles in infectious disease treatment. Recent discovery of a novel herbicide, tetflupyrolimet, and a potential clinical antifungal, olorofim, both targeting dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH), raises concern that widespread use of tetflupyrolimet may similarly cause clinical resistance to olorofim in Aspergillus isolates migrating from agricultural settings. Using minimum inhibitor

BACKGROUND: Pesticide residue analysis is a critical component of food safety monitoring. While multiresidue methods based on LC- or GC-MS are widely available, the analysis of highly polar or ionic pesticides remains challenging due to poor chromatographic retention, low recoveries, and repeatability.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a simple, rapid, and robust analytical method for the determination of highly polar or ionic pesticides and their metabolites in selected agricultural commodities.
METHODS: The method targets herbicides, including glyphosate, aminomethylphosphonic acid, g

The presence and accumulation of multiple pesticide residues in soil threaten biodiversity and soil health, yet depth-resolved evidence on pesticide-metabolite mixtures in subtropical agroecosystems remains underexplored. Here, we present the most comprehensive paired-depth assessment of parent pesticides and metabolites in Indian soils to date. We analyzed 181 compounds (63 insecticides, 41 fungicides, 32 herbicides, 45 metabolites) in 140 paired surface (0-5 cm) and subsurface (15-20 cm) soil samples collected during the 2024 growing season from 70 sites representing major land uses in the H

The alfalfa leafcutting bee (LCB) (Megachile rotundata Fabricius) is a solitary, managed pollinator widely used in North American agriculture to produce alfalfa and hybrid canola seed. Despite its economic importance, and known sensitivity to certain pesticides, little is known about the specific pesticide residues LCBs encounter during pollination, and toxicity data for this species remains limited. To determine what residues LCBs are commonly exposed to, we screened larval LCB provisions from nine alfalfa sites during pollination in southern Alberta for 69 pesticide residues. Eight residues

This study investigated the occurrence of pesticides, their ecological risks, and potential human health implications in irrigation-drainage canals of Chiang Mai's longan orchards during two phenological stages: flowering and easrly fruit development. In total, 25 pesticides were detected, including four fungicides, seven insecticides, and fourteen herbicides, across three canal sites (upstream, midstream, and downstream). Concentration dynamics varied strongly by phenological window and sampling sites along the canal. Among fungicides, carbendazim and hexaconazole increased during fruit set,

Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to control weeds, insects, and diseases that threaten crop yields. However, their extensive use raises concerns about environmental impacts, particularly in aquatic ecosystems, which are vulnerable to contamination through runoff and leaching. To assess the toxicity of pesticides to aquatic plants, we applied an optimized automated duckweed (Wolffia globosa) frond-counting tool based on the StarDist technique. Using this method, we tested twenty-eight commonly used pesticides, including herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides effects on duckweed growt

Pesticide transport from agricultural fields to surface waters is a major environmental concern, and reliable exposure assessments require models that capture the major transport pathways. While the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT+) is widely used for landscape-scale pesticide modeling, it lacks a process-based representation of spray drift, which can contribute substantially to surface water contamination. The newly developed Droplet and Atmospheric Dispersion drift (DAD-drift) model provides a mechanistic framework for estimating spray drift deposition under realistic field conditions.

General trends and strategies for the development of new pesticides are summarized. From 2015 to 2025, 156 chemical pesticides were launched or are under development: 47 fungicides, 54 insecticides/acaricides, 9 nematicides, and 46 herbicides. Most are safe to humans and environmentally friendly. The most developed fungicides are succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors, quinone outside inhibitors, quinone inside inhibitors, and demethylation inhibitors. The general trend of insecticide development is in the progress of four major classes of insecticides: nicotinic insecticides, diamide insecticides

The excessive use of conventional agrochemicals has led to severe environmental contamination, low utilization efficiency, and increasing concerns regarding ecological safety and sustainability. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a versatile class of porous materials for advanced agrochemical delivery owing to their high surface area, tunable pore structure, and modular chemical design. This review systematically summarizes the recent progress in MOF-based agrochemical delivery systems, with particular emphasis on their synthesis evolution, structural characterist

With the development of agriculture, organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) have been used extensively as insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. They have become the most widely used category of pesticides, accounting for about 40% of all pesticide use globally. However, although OPPs have lower environmental persistence and are less prone to bioaccumulation compared with other types of pesticides, their acute and chronic toxicity to organisms should not be underestimated. OPPs cause a variety of toxicities to organisms in the environment, the most notable of which is neurotoxicity. Their resid

Complexes of colchicine, colchiceine, and 10-methylthiocolchicine with Li+, Na+, and K+ cations in the form of chlorides were synthesized and then subjected to spectral analysis, DFT theoretical studies, and molecular modeling. The values for water solubility and lipophilicity were also determined using various platforms; both factors are very important for determining the bioavailability of the tested compounds. These compounds were also tested for their fungicidal, herbicidal, insecticidal, and cytotoxic activities. Preliminary in silico studies showed that colchicine, colchiceine, 10-methyl

Protecting aquatic ecosystems from pesticide pollution is a critical regulatory task. Benthic diatoms, being part of aquatic biofilms, are commonly used to indicate nutrient pollution. However, their potential as bioindicators for pesticides and other co-occurring environmental stressors remains poorly assessed. To address this, we conducted a flow-through chamber experiment designed to reflect realistic field exposure scenarios. We exposed biofilms to 44 treatments combining environmentally relevant pesticide mixtures including herbicides, fungicides, insecticides (44 levels of measured Toxic

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) have become the pre-eminent vertebrate model in aquatic ecotoxicology, yet the evidence base on pesticide bioavailability, bioaccumulation, and bioconcentration in this species is characterised by profound methodological fragmentation that limits the derivation of reliable risk estimates. This review critically appraises the primary literature across five major pesticide classes, namely organophosphates, pyrethroids, organochlorines, triazole and succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicides, and herbicides, and argues that the field's central limitation is not a

Rapid growth in domestic agriculture has made pesticides indispensable for safeguarding food security and boosting yields, yet their excessive use is now a major driver of environmental contamination and ecological degradation. This study focuses on three representative pesticides with distinct modes of action, documents their aqueous occurrence at μg/L levels, and quantifies their ecological toxicity to organisms spanning multiple trophic levels. In addition, this study combined two risk assessment methods to derive the acute and chronic water quality criteria for the three pesticides in seaw
