Assessing pesticide pollution in the Río de la Plata: A multi-tiered approach to ecological risk evaluation.

Agricultural intensification across the Argentine Pampas is reshaping the contaminant load delivered to the Río de la Plata. This study presents a basin-scale appraisal of pesticide occurrence and ecological risk along the Argentine margin, integrating monitoring at 22 surface-water sites with two sediment campaigns and targeted risk characterization. Eighty pesticides were analyzed; 34 were detected in water above detection limits. Occurrence was dominated by herbicides (glyphosate, atrazine and metabolites), alongside frequent fungicides and insecticides. In sediments, glyphosate and AMPA we

Assessing pesticide compatibility with entomopathogenic fungi for biological control: evidence from in vivo and in vitro assays.

Integrating entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) into crop protection programs requires ensuring their compatibility with insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides to enable simultaneous applications and reduce operational costs. Compatibility is typically assessed by incorporating pesticides into growth media and measuring toxicity through germination, growth, and sporulation (Biological Index). However, field applications mainly expose conidia directly to pesticides, potentially leading to mismatches between laboratory and real-world outcomes. Here, we evaluated the compatibility of 5 fungicides (cop

New Furoisocoumarins with Phytotoxic Activity from the Fungus Aspergillus calidoustus VKM F-4916.

Aspergillus fungi are a source of low-molecular compounds of various structures possessing biological activities. We investigated the secondary metabolite profile of the soil fungus A. calidoustus VKM F-4916. The strain was found to synthesize new metabolites attributed to furoisocoumarins, which we named asperisocoumarin J and K, and a known siderophore desferritriacetylfusigen. The structure of asperisocoumarin J and K were determined by mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. Asperisocoumarins J, K and desferritriacetylfusigen possessed a phytotoxicity, inhibiting the lettuce root growth. S

Duplex DNase-powered RNA walker for multiplex fluorescent detection of trace pesticide residues in tea samples.

BACKGROUND: The bipyridine herbicide paraquat (PQ) and the benzimidazole fungicide carbendazim (CBZ) play a key role in weed and fungus control on farmlands to elevate crop output. Yet, excessive deployment of these chemicals risks leaving residues in the food chain, constituting a grave danger to public health. The presence of multiple pesticide residues often elevates the risk of severe toxicity. Since existing detection techniques mostly target single pesticide residue and cannot fully assess the toxic impacts of both, developing new methods capable of simultaneously detecting PQ and CBZ re

Environmental occurrence, exposure, toxicity, and transformation of benzothiazoles: A review.

Benzothiazoles (BTs) are a class of aromatic heterocyclic compounds consisting of a benzene ring fused with a 1,3-thiazole ring. They have been widely used as vulcanization accelerators, fungicides, corrosion inhibitors, herbicides, anti-cancer drugs, etc., leading to their ubiquitous presence in various environmental media. Numerous studies have demonstrated that BTs exhibit multiple toxic effects. In this review, we systematically summarized research findings on the environmental occurrence, exposure, toxicity, and transformation of BTs. Benzothiazole (BTH) and 2-hydroxy-benzothiazole (2-OH-

Influence of variation in physicochemical properties of pesticides on their adsorption isotherms and leaching behavior in egyptian clay soil.

The physicochemical properties of pesticides specifically solubility, volatility, and molecular structure are the primary factors determining their mobility. These factors govern their movement within the plant and their transport through the soil. The present work evaluated how variation in physicochemical properties influences the adsorption and leaching behavior of nine commonly used pesticides in tomato fields. The study includes a representative selection of major insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides to provide a comprehensive overview of their behavior in the soil. The adsorption cap

Impact of pesticides on honeybees (Apis mellifera) physiology, foraging and colony: An overview.

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) play an indispensable role in global agricultural production, pollinating crops that support approximately one-third of the world's food supply and bolstering biodiversity through these essential ecosystem services. Yet, their survival is severely threatened by multiple environmental stressors, including biological (e.g. pathogens, parasites) and chemical (e.g. plant protection products/agents) factors, particularly pesticides. Pesticides, a broad spectrum of agrochemicals such as insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides are widely deployed to protect crops from inse

Impact of pesticides on colony living in ants.

Anthropocene is not only seeing a massive decline in insect species but also documenting an unprecedented increase in the use of pesticides globally. While the impact of pesticides has been examined in some non-target insects like honeybees, very few investigations have targeted ants. This review consolidates information on the impact of anthropogenic pesticide exposure on ant colony dynamics, fecundity, and survival. While a couple of studies showcased ants' resilience upon exposure to pesticides, the majority reported negative impacts. Insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides caused behaviou

Kinetics, mechanistic, toxicological and economical investigations of para-chlorophenol degradation by UV/persulfate and UV/persulfate/Fe2+ processes.

Para-chlorophenol (4-chlorophenol, 4-CP) is a member of the toxic chlorinated phenolic compounds. It is broadly used in preservatives, and as a precursor for some herbicides and fungicides and has been detected in natural aquatic environments. This work examined the photochemical degradation of 4-CP by ultraviolet light (UV), UV/persulfate (UV/PS) and UV/persulfate/Fe2+ (UV/PS/Fe2+) methods. Under UV light irradiation (UV-C, 254 nm), the removal efficiency of 4-CP (20 mg/L) was 44.7, 58.8 and 66.8% at pH 3, 6 and 11, respectively, after 25 min of irradiation. The addition of 0.5 mM PS to UV en

Sulfonamide in agricultural pest management: past and recent prospects.

The sulfonamide moiety (-SO2NH-) is a structurally versatile motif in agrochemical discovery. It can engage in hydrogen bonding, modulate molecular polarity and acidity, and act as a bioisostere or linking fragment in ligand design. Inspired by the mechanism of sulfonamide antibiotics, researchers have developed a range of agrochemicals active against plant pathogens and weeds. However, the development of sulfonamide-based agrochemicals has been unbalanced: commercial products are mainly concentrated in herbicides and some fungicides, whereas research on insecticides, antiviral and plant-growt

Waterborne Toxicants for the Exotic Animal Patient.

Water can serve as a vector for distribution and exposure to both toxins and toxicants. Because water is essential for all species, water quality impacts the health of wildlife and animals under managed care. Waterborne toxicants and toxins in exotic species include heavy metals, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, algal blooms, nitrogenous wastes, and water treatment chemicals. Susceptibility varies by species, and mitigation typically requires supportive care and removal of the source of contamination.
