Spatiotemporal patterns of anticoagulant rodenticide exposure in bobcats across the northeastern United States.

Anticoagulant rodenticides are a pervasive threat to non-target wildlife health, with exposure in predators frequently driven by the interface of human development and wild spaces. Long-term regional data are needed to understand how exposure rates vary in relation to changing regulation and public use of rodenticide compounds. We analyzed opportunistic samples collected from 2013-2024 across the northeastern United States to quantify rates of anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) contamination in bobcats (Lynx rufus) and identify spatial hot spots of exposure. We detected seven AR compounds in 352 b

Presumed transdermal superwarfarin toxicity in a pest control worker.

A man in his early 60s presented with dyspnoea superimposed on a 2-month to 3-month history of spontaneous mucocutaneous bleeding. Laboratory testing revealed unmeasurably elevated international normalised ratio (INR) and activated partial thromboplastin time. CT of the neck demonstrated supraglottic soft tissue swelling with severe airway narrowing, requiring intubation for airway protection. Further history revealed occupational exposure to rodenticides during pest control work without consistent use of personal protective equipment. Markedly reduced activity of vitamin K-dependent clotting

Conserving Rodent Pests in Transition Toward Endangered Status.

Rodent management has lacked explicit statements of desired outcomes and heavily borrows from invasive non-native species terminology for which eradication is an aspirational outcome. Rodent control, often reliant on rodenticides, invariably takes place in the context of ecosystems heavily modified by agriculture. Together, they are potent drivers of rodent decline and endangerment. I use the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species which is conservative to explore how widespread the transition from rodent pest to endangered rodent is. Twenty-three percent of extant rodent species are of some conse

Occult brodifacoum poisoning presenting as a massive intramuscular hematoma.

INTRODUCTION: Brodifacoum induces coagulopathy after absorption, causing severe systemic hemorrhage. Occult hemorrhage may delay diagnosis and treatment. CASE SUMMARY: A 56-year-old man was referred to our hospital with worsening right thigh swelling for nine days. He had no recent trauma or medications affecting his INR. On admission, laboratory tests revealed an elevated PT of 75 s and INR of 9.05, and serum brodifacoum concentration of 25 µg/L (0.0478 µmol/L). Imaging confirmed a large right thigh hematoma. Forty-three days prior to this presentation, he had presented with life-threatening

Surveillance of Anticoagulant Rodenticides in Free-Roaming Outdoor Cats (Felis catus) in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Rats are managed using anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) in cities worldwide, but these compounds cause morbidity and mortality in nontarget wildlife. Several cities also use free-roaming outdoor cat (Felis catus) colonies to help reduce rats, but there have been no investigations of how often these cats are exposed to ARs. In this study, our goal was to assess how often free-roaming domestic cats are exposed to ARs to 1) understand health risks for urban predators by using free-roaming cats as a proxy and 2) evaluate the health risks associated with using cats as rodent control. We tested bloo

Incidence of Vkorc1 gene mutations in brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) populations from downtown Madrid and their role in resistance to anticoagulant rodenticide: Implications for rodenticide management.

The brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) is considered a pest and the use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) has been considered a valuable method for their management. ARs inhibit the enzyme vitamin K 2,3-epoxide reductase complex subunit 1 (VKORC1), preventing activation of coagulation factors and provoking death by internal bleeding. Resistance to ARs is associated to Vkorc1 gene mutations. In the present study, we aim to characterize the incidence of mutations in Madrid downtown by using a novel sampling approach, based on a systematic procedure. Madrid central core (approx. 42 km2) was divided

Rats, residues and rodenticide resistance: Hepatic concentration of anticoagulant rodenticides in genetically susceptible wild brown and black rats.

Invasive rats are major pests worldwide, posing economic and public health risks. Since the 1950s, efforts have been made to control or eradicate these animals by using anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). Initially effective, ARs quickly lost efficacy due to the emergence of resistance-associated mutations in the Vkorc1 gene. When consumed in (sub-)lethal doses, these biocides bioaccumulate in the liver, becoming a risk for non-target predators. First, this study aims to assess genetic resistance to ARs in two synanthropic rat species, Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus, from port urban areas i

Toxicity of anticoagulant rodenticides to Pacific salmon: Assessing lethal and sublethal effects.

To restore native biodiversity on island ecosystems containing invasive rodents, partial- and whole-island eradications generally rely on broadcast baiting with anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). This approach can result in bait pellets entering aquatic environments, raising concerns about effects to non-target fish. Salmonids are a dominant group of fishes on many temperate islands targeted for rodent eradication, and AR toxicity data for salmonids are limited. Our goal was to determine if coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) are susceptible to coagulopathy and death via exposure to commonly use

The long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide brodifacoum induces neuropathology in adult New Zealand White rabbits and is reduced by the bile sequestrant cholestyramine.

Previous studies showed that exposure to long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides (LAARs) can induce neuropathology in adult rats. In the current study we tested if the potent LAAR brodifacoum similarly promoted neuropathology in adult rabbits which provide a better model of human LAAR poisoning. Adult male New Zealand White rabbits were administered by gavage a single administration of brodifacoum at its LD50 dose (200 μg/kg), followed by daily injections of vitamin K1 to prevent mortality due to anti-coagulation. After 3 weeks, examination of the cerebellum revealed an increase in glial cell a

Probabilistic approach reveals the toxicity threshold values of free-living raptors in Great Britain, United Kingdom, for the lethal effect of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides.

Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) are recognised as an effective tool for rodent pest control. However, the use of SGARs enhances their exposure of non-target species and can cause lethal and sublethal effects on these species, including free-living raptors. Although certain liver SGAR residue concentrations from laboratory experimental studies have been considered as conventional thresholds, determining the threshold values for free-living predatory birds remains a challenge. In this study, we estimated the toxicity threshold values for liver SGAR residues associated with l

Flocoumafen exposure induces skeletal developmental toxicity and neurotoxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Flocoumafen (FCF), a second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide (SGAR), has limited toxicological data regarding its effects on aquatic organisms. In this study, we exposed zebrafish embryos to FCF solutions at concentrations of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mg/L until 120 h post-fertilization (hpf). The results revealed a decrease in survival rates. Notably, FCF exposure significantly reduced the frequency of spontaneous tail coils at 24 hpf, while shortened body length and induced spinal curvature at 120 hpf. Furthermore, zebrafish larvae exhibited craniofacial abnormalities and incomplete bone mineral

Haematology and biochemistry reference intervals of Galapagos short-eared owls (Asio flammeus galapagoensis) from Floreana Island.

To limit the impact of invasive predator species on the ecosystem of Floreana Island, Galapagos, a large-scale rodent eradication program was implemented. Due to the significant risk of secondary exposure to rodenticide, a mitigation tactic was used to protect the only native raptor found on Floreana, the Galapagos short-eared owl (Asio flammeus galapagoensis). A large proportion of the owl population was brought into human care in July 2023 with the goal to release back to the wild following the completion of the eradication program and reduction of the risk of exposure to rodenticides. Community cats managed under Trap-Neuter-Return as sentinels of human diet-linked chemical exposure across contrasting feeding contexts.

At the local scale, environmental surveillance often overlooks diet-related exposures. In this study, we examined whether community cats managed through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs could serve as effective sentinels of human-relevant chemical mixtures shaped by local food environments. Intraoperative whole blood samples from 205 free-roaming cats were collected on two islands of the Canary archipelago, La Graciosa (n = 107) and Gran Canaria (n = 98), and analyzed for 55 elements and >360 organic contaminants using validated ICP-MS and micro-QuEChERS LC/GC-MS/MS workflows. Anticoagulant residues associated with an attempted rodent eradication from a subtropical coral atoll.

The use of rodenticides is a primary method for eradicating rodents from islands for conservation purposes. Rodenticide residue monitoring is often incorporated into rodent eradication project planning to understand the potential effects on nontarget species, but robust long-term sampling is often challenging due to logistical and financial constraints. We documented more than two years of rodenticide residues at fine-scale intervals with over 570 samples associated with a rodent eradication attempt. Brodifacoum-25D Conservation was applied in an attempt to eradicate house mice (Mus musculus)

Nest Box Condition and Maintenance of Barn Owls (Tyto alba) in Tropical Oil Palm Plantations.

Barn owls (Tyto alba) are widely used as biological control agents in Southeast Asian agroecosystems, especially in oil palm plantations where rodent pests cause major yield losses. The success of such programs relies not only on nest box installation but also on maintaining the structural condition of these boxes. We analyzed monthly nest box monitoring data from January 2022 to May 2023 across five oil palm plantations (CPI1-CPI5) in Southern Thailand, including numbers of total, damaged, repaired, and unrepaired boxes. Substantial spatial variation was observed: CPI1 maintained the highest

Extinction Debt Paid Off: The Demise of the European Polecat (Mustela putorius) in NE Iberia.

The global loss of individuals and populations is driving a myriad of species toward extinction, many of which are not yet recognized as threatened. The European polecat (Mustela putorius) exemplifies this trend, as throughout most of its range it is of low conservation concern despite widespread suspected, though poorly documented, population declines. For a decade, we monitored a vanishing polecat population to identify the ecological drivers behind its decline, using a combination of camera trapping (5551 trap days), roadkill data, landscape descriptors, and dietary and toxicological analys

Diet Metabarcoding Reveals Correlations Between the Consumption of Slugs and Hepatic Toxicants in European Hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus).

The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is currently designated as near threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Threats include reduced prey availability, emerging pathogens, and environmental contaminants. Improving knowledge of food preferences and the role of diet in disease and exposure to toxins is important for its conservation. We used fecal DNA metabarcoding to characterize the diet of 209 hedgehogs in Europe. Stylommatophora (slugs and snails) made up the most frequent order in the hedgehog diet (found in 92% of individuals), followed by Haplotaxida (

Distribution and frequency of Vkorc1 polymorphisms in house mice and Norway rats in the northeastern United States.

BACKGROUND: Modern commensal rodent pest control often relies on anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs), yet the development of resistance driven by mutations in the Vkorc1 gene has become a growing challenge in rodent management. Surveying the mutations in the Vkorc1 gene in rodents is essential to understanding the rodenticide resistance profile and its impacts on the environment. This study aimed to assess the distribution and frequency of Vkorc1 polymorphisms in house mice and Norway rats in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC, USA. RESULTS: A total of 147 house mice (Mus mus
