Survival after aluminum phosphide poisoning with cardiotoxicity: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Aluminum phosphide is a cheap and commonly used rodenticide that is also an effective solid fumigant and frequently used for grain preservation. The pill contains around 44% inert elements (ammonium carbonate) to avoid disintegration of the tablet, while the rest (about 56%) is aluminum phosphide. Because it is freely available on the market, it is one of the commonly used agents for self-poisoning in different parts of the developing world. Early signs of toxicity are manifested by shock and circulatory failure. Until now, no specific antidote is available. Aggressive supportive

A Mysterious Cause of Coagulopathy With Bleeding Diathesis.

Vitamin K is essential to produce functional vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors (prothrombin, factors VII, IX, and X). Vitamin K antagonists inhibit the normal activation of these factors, leading to bleeding manifestations of variable severity. Long-acting vitamin K antagonists or superwarfarins were developed as rodenticides and have a significantly longer half-life and greater potency when compared to warfarin. Intoxication with superwarfarins presents a typical clinical picture and evolution, but its diagnosis can be challenging without a clear ingestion history. We describe a case of

Unilateral retrobulbar haemorrhage in a cat secondary to suspected anticoagulant rodenticide intoxication.

A 6-month-old intact female mixed-breed kitten presented with severe exophthalmos of the left eye. Periocular lesions, including subconjunctival haemorrhage, third eyelid protrusion, and left eyelid oedema, were detected in the absence of globe retropulsion. The left intraocular pressure was increased, and ocular ultrasonography revealed ipsilateral retrobulbar fluid. Coagulation panels were markedly prolonged and severe anaemia was detected. Ultrasound-guided retrobulbar centesis performed to decrease intraocular pressure yielded blood. Based on the history and clinical findings, anticoagulan

Conquering Challenges: A Case Series of Yellow Phosphorus Poisoning at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Pune, Western India.

Rodenticides are easily available in the market and suicidal attempts by ingesting such poisonous products are commonly reported in rural India. We aimed to analyze predictive factors, biological markers, and treatment outcomes among patients who ingested rodenticides (yellow phosphorus) with the brand name, Rattol. Here, we present three such cases who were admitted to a tertiary care hospital. We recorded socio-demographic characteristics, probable predictive factors, and serial charting biological markers. Conventional treatment was given to these cases. All cases were young women (age rang

Rodent control strategies and Lassa virus: some unexpected effects in Guinea, West Africa.

The Natal multimammate mouse (Mastomys natalensis) is the host of Lassa mammarenavirus, causing Lassa haemorrhagic fever in West Africa. As there is currently no operational vaccine and therapeutic drugs are limited, we explored rodent control as an alternative to prevent Lassa virus spillover in Upper Guinea, where the disease is highly endemic in rural areas. In a seven-year experiment, we distributed rodenticides for 10-30 days once a year and, in the last year, added intensive snap trapping for three months in all the houses of one village. We also captured rodents both before and after th

Deciphering the enigma of Lassa virus transmission dynamics and strategies for effective epidemic control through awareness campaigns and rodenticides.

This study aims to formulate a mathematical framework to examine how the Lassa virus spreads in humans of opposite genders. The stability of the model is analyzed at an equilibrium point in the absence of the Lassa fever. The model's effectiveness is evaluated using real-life data, and all the parameters needed to determine the basic reproduction number are estimated. Sensitivity analysis is performed to pinpoint the crucial parameters significantly influencing the spread of the infection. The interaction between threshold parameters and the basic reproduction number is simulated. Control theo

A rodent and tick bait for controlling white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) and blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis), the respective pathogen host and vector of the Lyme disease spirochetes.

A promising alternative approach to conventional vector and rodent control practices is the use of a bait containing a rodenticide and acaricide in controlling vectors and pathogen reservoirs concurrently. In the United States, Lyme disease continues to be the most prevalent vector-borne disease with approximately 500,000 Lyme disease cases estimated each year. Previous research has demonstrated the usefulness of a low dose fipronil bait in controlling Ixodes scapularis larvae feeding on white-footed mice. However, considering white-footed mice can be an unwanted species because of their assoc

A Scientific Review of Pesticides: Classification, Toxicity, Health Effects, Sustainability, and Environmental Impact.

Over the years, the use of pesticides has risen significantly, primarily to combat undesirable organisms that threaten crucial crops. A variety of pesticides are available, each designed to protect crops from specific threats like fungi, bacteria, and other pests. Other than crop protection, pesticides are also used in controlling insect vector-borne diseases like malaria and Lyme disease in humans. However, the application of these pesticides must be carefully measured and managed to prevent adverse effects on humans, non-target animals, and the environment. This review delves into the detail

Unique granulated leucocytes in peripheral blood in yellow phosphorous poisoning: An interesting tool for monitoring therapeutic response.

Yellow phosphorus is one of the most commonly used rodenticides in India for household pest control. It is available as pastes containing 2% to 5% of yellow phosphorus. Yellow phosphorous-containing rodenticides are easily available and account for one of the most common causes of suicidal poisoning in India. We describe a case of yellow phosphorus poisoning in a 17-years-old child who recovered from hepatic encephalopathy and showed unique peripheral smear findings in the form of spurious monocytosis and hypergranulosis of these granulocytes.

Efficacy of cholecalciferol rodenticide to control wood rat, Rattus tiomanicus and its secondary poisoning impact towards barn owl, Tyto javanica javanica.

Studies were conducted on the potential use of cholecalciferol as an alternative to anticoagulant rodenticides to control common rat pest in oil palm plantations, i.e., wood rats, Rattus tiomanicus, and the secondary poisoning impact of cholecalciferol on barn owls, Tyto javanica javanica. The laboratory efficacy of cholecalciferol (0.075% a.i.) was compared with commonly used first-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (FGARs): chlorophacinone (0.005% a.i) and warfarin (0.05% a.i). The 6-day wild wood rat laboratory feeding trial showed cholecalciferol baits had the highest mortality rate at

Brodifacoum Levels and Biomarkers in Coastal Fish Species following a Rodent Eradication in an Italian Marine Protected Area: Preliminary Results.

Brodifacoum is the most common rodenticide used for the eradication of invasive rodents from islands. It blocks the vitamin K cycle, resulting in hemorrhages in target mammals. Non-target species may be incidentally exposed to brodifacoum, including marine species. A case study conducted on the Italian Marine Protected Area of Tavolara Island was reported after a rodent eradication using the aerial broadcast of a brodifacoum pellet. Brodifacoum presence and effects on non-target marine organisms were investigated. Different fish species were sampled, and a set of analyses was conducted to dete

Comprehensive Evaluation of an HPLC-MS-MS Method for Quantitation of Seven Anti-Coagulant Rodenticides and Dicoumarol in Animal Serum.

Anti-coagulant rodenticides (ARs) are commonly utilized for controlling rodent populations; however, non-target companion and wildlife animals are also exposed. A method was developed for quantitation of seven ARs (chlorophacinone, coumachlor, bromadiolone, brodifacoum, difethialone, diphacinone and warfarin) and dicoumarol (a naturally occurring anti-coagulant) in animal serum. Analytes were extracted with 10% (v/v) acetone in methanol and analyzed by reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry using electrospray ionization (negative mode) combined with multi

Novel radiological technique to recognize acute liver failure caused by yellow phosphorous containing rodenticides.

Yellow phosphorous rodenticide (YPR) poisoning is the commonest cause for acute liver failure (ALF) in southern and western India. Due to medicolegal issues, history of YPR ingestion may not be available. As early recognition of YPR poisoning is important and there are no specific biochemical assays, other early predictors to identify this entity is necessary. We evaluated the diagnostic role of plain computed tomography (CT) in identifying YPR-induced ALF. All patients admitted to the liver unit with a diagnosis of ALF underwent a plain CT scan abdomen. Demographic details, clinical history,

A Remote Monitoring System for Rodent Infestation Based on LoRaWAN.

Rodent infestations are a common problem that can result in several issues, including diseases, damage to property, and crop loss. Conventional methods of controlling rodent infestations often involve using mousetraps and applying rodenticides manually, leading to high manpower expenses and environmental pollution. To address this issue, we introduce a system for remotely monitoring rodent infestations using Internet of Things (IoT) nodes equipped with Long Range (LoRa) modules. The sensing nodes wirelessly transmit data related to rodent activity to a cloud server, enabling the server to prov
