Rodent control on the front line: knowledge and practices of pest controllers on the use of anticoagulant rodenticides.

BACKGROUND: Synanthropic rodents are globally perceived as pests because of their adaptability to anthropogenic environments, and result in significant challenges to food and health security. Rodent control with anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) has been widely implemented to minimize economic losses, despite concerns about the impacts of ARs. This study aims to evaluate AR use and knowledge among pest management professionals (PMPs). Using an online survey, we aimed to: (i) assess PMPs' training; (ii) identify commonly used control methods; (iii) evaluate dependency on ARs; and (iv) evaluate P

Channel-Like Binding Pocket-Mediated Nanobody-Alkaline Phosphatase Fusion Protein for Chemiluminescent Immunoassay of Anticoagulant Rodenticides.

Widespread application of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) has raised public health concerns due to their toxicity and persistence. Nanobody (Nb) fusion proteins integrate target recognition and signal output for facile immunoassay development. However, whether next-generation sequencing (NGS)-identified Nbs are equally suitable for fusion-protein construction and immunoassay development as phage display-derived Nbs remains underexplored because previous studies on Nb-fusion proteins have focused exclusively on phage display-derived Nbs. Here, two high-affinity anti-AR Nbs, phage display-deriv

Forensic LC-MS/MS Monitoring of Anticoagulant Rodenticide Poisoning in Cats Over a Half-Decade.

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are important toxicants in veterinary forensic investigations involving suspected poisoning in cats. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop and validate a standardized LC-MS/MS-QTRAP method for the simultaneous identification and quantification of eight ARs in gastric matrices from cats and to assess its applicability to veterinary forensic toxicology. METHODS: Automated sample preparation was implemented to reduce inter-analyst variability. Dual confirmation using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) and enhanced product ion (EPI) spectra was appl

Exposure to second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides is widespread in the non-target British wild mammals Erinaceus europaeus and Vulpes vulpes.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs), molluscicides, and neonicotinoids are widely used biocides for plant protection and pest control and are considered a potential health risk to non-target wildlife. Here, we investigate these compounds in convenience samples derived from 100 European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) and 181 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from England (2013 to 2020), screening liver tissues using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Whilst no molluscicides or neonicotinoids were detected, except for low level clothianidin in a single fox, ARs were found in 62% of hedgehog a

Methomyl poisoning in dogs: report of 5 cases and literature review.

Methomyl is a widely available carbamate pesticide that acts as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Here, we describe 5 cases of methomyl poisoning in dogs. The main gross and microscopic findings included pulmonary edema and multisystemic congestion and hemorrhages, which were most severe in the respiratory tract. The diagnosis of poisoning was confirmed in all cases by detecting methomyl in gastric contents using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Differential diagnoses include poisoning by organophosphates, coumarin rodenticides, and sodium fluoroacetate, which share clinical and patholog

Patterns of bromethalin exposure and toxicosis in California mammals across a shifting rodenticide use landscape.

Bromethalin is an acutely neurotoxic rodenticide used as an alternative to anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) for commensal rodent control. Non-target exposure to bromethalin, and its highly toxic hepatic metabolite, desmethylbromethalin (DMB), is an emerging concern for non-target wildlife yet the ecological implications remain poorly understood. We evaluated patterns of bromethalin exposure and toxicosis in wild mammals using postmortem data collected from 2017-2024 in California, USA. Wildlife samples tested for bromethalin exposure during the study period were screened opportunistically, und

Longer-term impact of pesticide bans on suicide in South Korea.

INTRODUCTION: Pesticide self-poisoning accounts for 14%-20% of global suicides. South Korea banned paraquat and eight insecticides commonly involved in suicide in 2011-2012. We investigated the longer-term (2013-2019) impact of the pesticide bans on reducing suicides in South Korea. METHODS: Suicide data by sex, age, area and method among people aged 15 years or above were extracted from registered death data (1997-2019). Data for suicide by self-poisoning using different categories of pesticides (herbicides and fungicides; insecticides; rodenticides and other pesticides; and unspecified pest

A rare case of planned complex suicide involving multiple methods: forensic reconstruction and interpretive challenges.

Planned complex suicides that combine multiple mechanisms pose substantial challenges for medicolegal reconstruction. We report a rare case of a 27-year-old man who simultaneously employed four methods: plastic-bag asphyxia with a continuous natural-gas supply (stove hose taped to bag tubing), environmental sealing of door seams with adhesive tape, rodenticide ingestion, and superficial incised injuries to the neck and wrist. Scene reconstruction, full autopsy, and comprehensive toxicology established asphyxia from natural-gas inhalation via the plastic-bag apparatus as the cause of death; ant

Osteomyelitis of anterior maxilla involving bilateral sinuses post-rodenticide toxicity: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Osteomyelitis is an uncommon but serious infection of the maxilla, often associated with dental infections, maxillary sinusitis, or systemic conditions that compromise immunity. Maxillary involvement is rare compared to mandibular osteomyelitis. While recognized predisposing factors include diabetes mellitus, autoimmune disorders, and anemia, rodenticide exposure has not previously been reported as a cause. To our knowledge, this is the first documented case of maxillary osteonecrosis secondary to rodenticide toxicity. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old Indian woman presented with p

Ethinylestradiol-Levonorgestrel Bait Impairs Testicular Function, Triggers Germ Cell Apoptosis, and Alters Health Markers in Male Rats: Implications for Wildlife Fertility.

Lethal rodent control methods raise ecological and ethical concerns, driving interest in fertility-based population management approaches. Hormonal male baiting represents an innovative ecological tool for rodent population control. While most studies have focused on quinestrol+ levonorgestrel (EP1), there have been few studies of alternative hormones. To date, no study has investigated the palatability, hematology, or serum biochemistry effects of ethinylestradiol-levonorgestrel (EE + LNG) bait on male rats nor have there been studies on the integrity of the testes, liver, and kidney using ac

Pathology of sudden death in racehorses: a review.

Sudden death (SD) is the second most important syndrome associated with death in racehorses. The cause of SD in a large number of horses remains undetermined, and, in many of these cases, causes are not found by gross or microscopic postmortem examinations. Among the known causes of SD are traumatic injuries, including fractures of skull, neck, and pelvis; intoxications (e.g., anticoagulant rodenticides); and others. For many cases of SD in which no significant lesions are found, heart failure, probably associated with arrhythmias, is suspected. Precise phenotypic characterization of SD in hor

Forest food web contamination by rodenticides is pervasive but responsive to regulation: Insights from Barred Owl biomonitoring.

Anticoagulant rodenticides and their substitutes are widely deployed in urban and agricultural settings, but evidence is mounting that contamination extends into remote forests through diffuse sources. Most wildlife exposure data come from opportunistic carcass collections that systematically overrepresent animals near human activity and in compromised condition. We used experimental removals of Barred Owls (Strix varia) from non-urban forests of northwestern California as a minimally biased sentinel sample, analyzing liver tissue from 1003 individuals collected between 2019 and 2025 for 14 ro

A comparative evaluation of the efficacy of traps and rodenticide baits in field studies with house mice (Mus musculus).

The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of trapping and subsequent rodenticide baiting for house mouse (Mus musculus) control under field conditions. Three field trials were conducted, with pre- and post-treatment feeding and tracking censuses used to estimate control success. Trapping alone reduced feeding census values by 69% from 159 to 49 g at Site 1, 40% (344 g/208 g) at Site 2, and 58% (194 g/82 g) at Site 3. Tracking censuses confirmed similar reductions (44-67%). Trapping was most effective in the lower infestation levels and where food availability was limited. The cho

Effect of Sodium Nitrite on the cerebellar cortex and the possible role of Quercetin in adult male albino rats.

The cerebellum is particularly vulnerable to intoxication and poisoning due to its complex structure. Sodium Nitrite is commonly used as a food additive, as well as in fertilizers and rodenticides. Quercetin, a widely distributed flavonoid in nature, has been investigated for its potential protective effects. This research aimed to evaluate the histological and biochemical changes in the cerebellar cortex of adult male albino rats resulting from Sodium Nitrite exposure, and to assess the protective role of Quercetin and the reversibility of these changes after stopping Sodium Nitrite. Aortic dissection precipitated by superwarfarin (brodifacoum) poisoning: a case report and pathophysiological review.

BACKGROUND: Poisoning by rodenticides, particularly anticoagulant agents, has been well-documented. Brodifacoum, a second-generation "superwarfarin", is a long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide (LAAR) characterized by an extended half-life. Its toxicity primarily manifests as excessive or abnormal bleeding from the skin, mucous membranes, gastrointestinal tract, and urinary tract. However, aortic dissection (AD)-a rare and catastrophic medical event-has seldom been reported as a complication of such poisoning. We present a case of extensive aortic dissection triggered by Brodifacoum poisoning.

Programmable Spatiotemporal Magnetic Fields for Selective Multimodal Actuation and Deterministic Decoupling of Heterogeneous Magnetic Robots.

Magnetic milli/microrobots hold strong potential for biomedical applications, but their deployment as multi-robot systems is limited by short-range magnetic coupling, which prevents independent control in confined environments. Here, we present an expanded field-free region (FFR)-based control framework for spatially selective actuation of multiple magnetic torque-driven robots in confined environments. A generalized selective-control criterion incorporating the minimum rotating magnetic field required for robot actuation enables the framework to accommodate robots with different magnetic resp
