Vector symbolic algebras for the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with anorexia nervosa frequently feel ambivalent about treatment and weight restoration, and drop out and relapse rates in treatment are high. Increased insight into the function of the eating disorder is considered essential for achieving long-lasting, meaningful change. However, research investigating the functions of anorexia nervosa tends to focus on the role of the disease per se. Distinctions are rarely made across features. In particular, the subjective experience, understanding and sense making of the engagement in compulsive exercise in individuals with anorexi

Detection of circovirus and herpesvirus co-infection in suddenly dead.

This article investigates the causes of the sudden death of six common ravens (Corvus corax). All six birds were found on the same day in central Poland. The ravens were necropsied, and samples were collected for bacteriological, histopathological, and toxicological examinations. The presence of genetic material from common viral and some bacterial pathogens was examined using molecular methods. The ravens were found to be in good nutritional condition. Two birds had enlarged spleens with petechiae on their surface. Histopathological examination revealed multifocal hemorrhages and inflammatory

Seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against measles in adolescents and adults from Metropolitan Lima and Callao, Peru, 2024-2025.

INTRODUCTION: The EndoFLIP (for its acronym in English: endoluminal functional luminal probe) is a system that measures in real time the compliance index of the gastroesophageal junction and secondary esophageal peristalsis, based on the principle of impedance planimetry. Although this technology is relatively new and its diagnostic usefulness is still being evaluated, its use in clinical practice is increasingly recognized, fundamentally in those patients where there is no conclusive manometric diagnosis of esophageal motor pathology, mainly esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction and ac

Widespread anticoagulant resistance in house mice (Mus musculus musculus) linked to the Tyr139Phe mutation in the Czech Republic.

Despite the widespread use of anticoagulant rodenticides in baits for controlling commensal rodent pests, their application is problematic due to secondary intoxication and increasing resistance. In contrast to studies on Western European house mice (Mus musculus domesticus), few resistance studies have focused on Eastern European house mice (M. musculus musculus), which have a western distribution boundary in the Czech Republic. This study newly analysed the VKORC1 gene in M. m. musculus field populations from Czech farms and grain stores and identified a nonsynonymous mutation Tyr139Phe. Thi

Brodifacoum causes coagulopathy, hemorrhages, and mortality in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) at environmentally relevant hepatic residue concentrations.

Widely used second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides like brodifacoum are classified as persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic. Widespread exposure of terrestrial and avian non-target species is well-known and recently hepatic anticoagulant rodenticide residues have been detected in wild fish. However, no sufficient data exist to interpret the effects of these findings on fish health. In order to assess the potential impact of rodenticide residues on fish, we exposed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to brodifacoum-spiked feed. In a first experiment, individually kept trout (body weight

New polymorphisms of Vkork1 gene related to anticoagulant resistance of rats and mice in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are a very effective tool to control rodent pest populations. Nevertheless, AR resistance has been documented worldwide. ARs block the cycle of vitamin K, leading to the death of the animal by internal bleeding: mutations in Vkorc1 gene can cause resistance. The spreading of AR-resistant rodents could lead to an increase of their populations, the associated diffusion of zoonotic pathogens, and to the amplified exposure of non-target animals to ARs, thus it is important to study its diffusion widely. This study aimed to report firstly the presence of

Simultaneous quantification of eighteen therapeutic oral anticoagulants, rodenticides, and antiplatelet agents by LC-MS/MS and its application in post-mortem forensic cases.

Anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents, which interfere with blood coagulation, can lead to fatal bleeding. Moreover, their widespread use as drugs or rodenticides poses a high risk of accidental or intentional poisoning. Therefore, quantifying these substances is essential in forensic investigations. This research aimed to develop and validate a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method capable of quantifying eighteen anticoagulant or antiplatelet compounds (apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, warfarin, acenocoumarol, fluindione, brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, difethialone,

Strychnine poisoning in nontarget species in western Canada: A retrospective case series (2014 to 2023).

BACKGROUND: Strychnine is a highly toxic, plant-derived alkaloid. It has historically been used in western Canada as a rodenticide for control of Richardson's ground squirrels; and in Alberta, as a predacide against wolves, coyotes, black bears, and skunks. However, nontarget species poisonings with strychnine have been widely documented in Canada and elsewhere. Poisonings manifest as acute neuroexcitation and are usually fatal. In March 2023, strychnine was banned in Canada for control of Richardson's ground squirrels, with concerns over wildlife poisonings cited. However, fatal poisonings ha

Widespread detection of second generation anticoagulant rodenticides in Australian native marsupial carnivores.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) have been detected in non-target wildlife species worldwide but information on exposure in Australian mammals is extremely limited. To address this, we analysed liver tissue from the five largest sized species of native Australian carnivorous and scavenging mammals for all SGARs currently used in Australia. A total of 52 individual animals from five dasyurid species were tested for exposure to ARs with 26 individuals (50 %) testing positive. Eleven individuals (21 %) tested positive for more than one AR compound, and two individuals tested positive for three ty

Effects of Long-Acting Anticoagulant Rodenticides on Rabbit Plasma Extracellular Vesicles.

Environmental toxicants and physiological stressors can significantly impact the production and composition of extracellular vesicles (EVs), which are mediators of long-distance intercellular communication. Understanding these processes is essential since EVs can exert far-reaching effects on diverse tissues and organs, including the central nervous system, by crossing the blood-brain barrier. This study investigated plasma EV dynamics in response to long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides (LAARs), warfarin analogs with long biological half-lives used to eradicate rodent infestation that also p

Spatiotemporal drivers of rodenticide exposure in a mammalian forest carnivore.

Anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) use carries a risk to wild carnivores via secondary consumption of toxic prey, specifically via coagulopathy which can result in morbidity or mortality. Though proximity to urban development often correlates with increased exposure in non-target wildlife, outdoor use of AR products in more rural settings can also contribute to secondary exposures, though point sources are difficult to identify. For fishers (Pekania pennanti), we suspected that alternate-year pulsed resources (e.g., mast seeding), known to drive irruptions in small mammal abundance in densely fore

Clinical features and management strategies of acute soluble barium poisoning: a review of case reports.

Soluble barium salts including barium carbonate, nitrate, acetate, and chloride are commonly used in the manufacture of ceramics, insecticides, and rodenticides. Soluble barium salts are highly toxic to humans if ingested. Acute soluble barium poisoning is an uncommon but life-threatening problem. The fatal dose of barium chloride for man has been reported to be only 0.8 to 0.9 gram. Currently, there have been no systematic studies on acute soluble barium poisoning. Based on the retrospective analysis of 55 global cases, toxicological characteristics, clinical features and management of acute
