Detection of Vkorc1 single nucleotide polymorphisms indicates the presence of anticoagulant rodenticide resistance in Australia's introduced rats†.

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are used globally to manage pest rodent populations. However, resistance to ARs in target rodent populations challenges pest control efforts and can increase risks to nontarget species. Resistance is frequently associated with nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) in the Vkorc1 gene, and this study carried out the first Vkorc1 survey of introduced rats on the Australian mainland. RESULTS: We identified three species of introduced rat using the cytochrome b gene across Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney: Rattus rattus (Linnaeus 1

Alterations in the cecal microbiome of New Zealand White rabbits due to the long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide brodifacoum.

Long-acting anti-coagulant rodenticides (LAARs) are well characterized with respect to inhibition of vitamin K1 synthesis and effects on blood coagulation. However, the effects of LAARs on the microbiome have not been explored. We administered brodifacoum (BDF), one of the more potent LAARs, to adult male New Zealand White rabbits, and carried out 16S RNA sequencing on cecal samples collected after different times. Samples were also obtained from rabbits treated with the bile sequestrant cholestyramine (CSA) which accelerates BDF clearance from the body, and from CSA-only treated rabbits. Chan

Widespread anticoagulant rodenticide exposure in hedgehogs and their prey in Belgium: prevalence, distribution and hedgehogs' health implications.

The impact of commonly used anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) on non-target wild animals is poorly understood. This study contributes to a better understanding of European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) exposure to ARs, associated sublethal health effects, and the role of slugs (Deroceras and Lehmannia, important prey items) in AR transmission. Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was used to determine exposure levels to first- and second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (FGARs and SGARs) in 128 free-ranging European hedgehogs and 120 slugs. Epidemiological analysis of 2,368 pesticide poisoning patients in Quzhou City, China.

INTRODUCTION: Pesticides, which are chemical compounds, are mainly utilized to eradicate pests such as insects, rodents, fungi, and unwanted plants (weeds). However, improper application or storage of pesticides can lead to poisoning incidents. In China, many patients tend to abandon treatment and return home when their condition severely deteriorates. This behavior makes it challenging for medical institutions to precisely track the patients' subsequent conditions, resulting in the reported number of deaths in the system being lower than the actual figure. METHODS: This research obtained cas

Widespread Contamination by Anticoagulant Rodenticides in Insectivorous Wildlife from the Canary Islands: Exploring Alternative Routes of Exposure.

Research on anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) in wildlife has primarily focused on apex predators, with less attention given to their potential integration into lower trophic levels and the associated exposure pathways. At the base of the terrestrial food web, invertebrates have been suggested as potential vectors of ARs to insectivorous species such as small mammals, reptiles, and birds. To explore this hypothesis, we analyzed the presence of nine anticoagulant rodenticides-including both first-generation (FGARs) and second-generation (SGARs) rodenticides-in 36 liver samples from Yemen chamele

Small mammal activities structure fine-scale soil microbial communities and coordinate rodenticide effects in the typical steppes of China.

Soil microbial community is a diverse combination of microbial species that is influenced by soil moisture, physicochemical properties, biological activities, and other factors. Brandt's vole (Lasiopodomys brandtii) is a small rodent distributed in the typical steppes of China, Mongolia, and Russia, which often causes serious pest to the local areas when its population outbreaks. Yet the impacts of rodenticides on soil microbial diversity and ecosystem functions in Brandt's vole habitats are not well-known. In this study, we compared the microbial community composition and functional genes bet

Predictive framework for estimating the risks to raptors from ecologically relevant exposure to second generation anticoagulant rodenticides.

Globally, populations of many raptor species are declining for reasons including exposure to chemical contaminants. Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticide (SGAR) residues are commonly found in the livers of raptors, indicating dietary exposure and potentially secondary poisoning. There is a gap in our understanding of SGAR exposure for raptors at different life stages and under different usage regimes. We develop a new modelling framework for non-target species to refine the commonly applied risk assessment using the common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) as a case study. Our scenarios simula

Alphachloralose intoxication: A retrospective study on epidemiology, clinical presentation, and management in an adult emergency department in Morocco.

BACKGROUND: Alphachloralose, initially used as a hypnotic and anesthetic, is now restricted to rodenticides. Despite limited medical use, it remains accessible in North Africa, contributing to intentional poisonings. Poisoning primarily presents with neurological and respiratory symptoms, posing a significant public health concern. This study describes the epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic characteristics of alphachloralose poisoning cases admitted to the adult emergency department of a university hospital in Casablanca, Morocco. METHODS: A retrospective study analyzed emergency depa

Facile synthesis and characterization of nanorods Pb-MOF for toxic rodenticide detection.

One of the most powerful anticoagulant rodenticides is bromadiolone and its detection is essential because of its extensive application and possible environmental and health risks. Bromadiolone is a highly potent second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide that poses significant risks to both human health and the environment. Due to its high toxicity, even low levels of exposure can lead to severe poisoning in non-target species, including pets, wildlife, and humans. Furthermore, bromadiolone is known for its environmental persistence, accumulating in ecosystems and entering food chains. There

Development and Mechanistic Evaluation of a Lithocholic Acid Derivative as an Environmentally Safe Rodenticide.

Control of rodents remains a critical global challenge due to their role in spreading zoonotic diseases and damaging ecosystems, but current rodenticides, such as anticoagulant rodenticides, have significant limitations, including the development of resistance in rodents and bioaccumulation leading to secondary toxicity in nontarget species. Dcha-20, a lithocholic acid derivative and vitamin D receptor agonist, was synthesized to potentially address these issues. This study investigates its rodenticidal efficacy, safety profile, and mechanism of action. The oral LD50 estimate of Dcha-20 was 4.

Exposure of Domestic Cats (Felis catus) to Rodenticidal Compounds.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are highly effective, but can be of environmental concern due to primary and secondary non-target exposure, with the latter possible being relevant to domestic cats. Therefore, liver residues of ARs and an alternative rodenticide, α-chloralose, were systematically monitored in domestic cats for the first time in the current study. In 2021 and 2022, the carcasses of 99 cats were collected in Slovenia and liver residues were measured by using solid supported liquid-liquid extraction and LC-MS/MS. The results show that 65% of cats carried at least one rodenticide.

Identifying organic contaminants at trespass cannabis grows on federal land in California, USA.

Despite the legalization of recreational cannabis in California, USA, illegal cannabis cultivation remains pervasive, partly through the establishment of illegal cultivation on public lands (trespass grows). These operations often illegally divert water for irrigation and perform unauthorized applications of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This work investigates a broad suite of these chemicals, focusing on their persistence in topsoil and presence in water and bed sediment in adjacent streams. Quantitative analyses of pesticides were conducted (183 compounds in water; 176 in topsoil/bed

Assessing Birds of Prey as Biological Pest Control: A Comparative Study with Hunting Perches and Rodenticides on Rodent Activity and Crop Health.

Rodent damage significantly affects agriculture around the world. Rodenticides can sometimes control pests, but they are costly, may cause secondary poisoning to nontarget wildlife, and can become less efficient over time due to bait shyness and resistance. Using wildlife as biological pest control agents, particularly barn owls (Tyto spp.), has been suggested as an alternative. Barn owl nest boxes and hunting perches have been added to increase predator pressure, yet few studies have examined their effectiveness. We conducted a field study in forty-five 10 × 10 m2 plots to compare three treat

Toxic legacy: The hidden impact of anticoagulant rodenticides on Portuguese raptors.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are widely used for rodent control, with a significant risk of secondary poisoning in non-target wildlife, particularly raptors. This study presents the first broad monitoring effort in Portugal, by assessing AR bioaccumulation levels in raptor species that entered Portuguese wildlife recovery centres between 2017 and 2024, both from mainland and Madeira Island. We analysed liver samples from 210 individuals from 15 species, representing four families: Accipitridae, Falconidae, Strigidae, and Tytonidae. Anticoagulant rodenticide accumulation in the liver and plasma of pigeons (Columba livia) in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are widely used worldwide to control rodents. Currently, many countries are considering the use of ARs, which results in widespread accumulation and poisoning of nontarget animals. Nontarget pigeons (Columba livia) typically live near human communities and agricultural areas. These birds are at high risk of accidental daily exposure to ARs. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate ARs in the liver and plasma of pigeons living in rural and urban areas of Thailand. METHODS: Bird samples were characterized by sampling location, age, body weight (BW), and bo
