Nutria (Myocastor coypus) is a large, herbivorous rodent found in Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia. Anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) toxicosis was diagnosed in captive nutrias based on anamnesis, clinical signs and chemical analysis, marking suspected case in this species in Thailand. Six out of the eight nutrias in the same herd died, showing initial clinical signs such as abnormal bleeding and abortion in pregnant individuals. A carcass of the dead nutria was analysed for exposure to rodenticides. Screening tests on liver specimens, using thin-layer chromatography and spectrophotometry,

Environmental monitoring of rodenticide contamination is often required to address public concern of off-target poisoning, which threatens animal populations and disrupts related ecology. This study aimed to address the shortcomings of current analytical methods for testing water-soluble anticoagulant rodenticide by application of direct analysis in real time in tandem with time-of-flight (DART-ToF) mass spectrometry (MS), an alternative analytical technique offering rapidity, low cost, and robustness. Both positive and negative ion modes were investigated with the aim of establishing a quick

Chemical pollution of the environment is one of the main factors contributing to the global decline of wildlife populations. Both persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and new contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) can pose a threat to the health of humans and wildlife. Bird species, and raptors in particular, are used as sentinels for environmental pollution because they are at the top of food chains and can accumulate and biomagnify organic contaminants. In this context, 136 blood samples from chicks of four species (Eurasian eagle-owl, common buzzard, common kestrel, and white stork) were a

Zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) poisoning during pregnancy is exceedingly unusual and potentially lethal, with no previously known occurrences globally. We present a 26-year-old woman, gravida 2 para 1, at 29 weeks gestation, who took 15 g of Zn3P2 in a suicidal attempt and experienced non-projectile vomiting. Her vital signs were stable (BP 110/80 mmHg, GCS 15/15), but she experienced transitory hepatic dysfunction that improved on Day 4 with supportive therapy such as coconut oil gastric lavage, intravenous fluids, and pantoprazole. The fetal scan confirmed viability (heart rate of 158 bpm). The high

The extensive use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) for rodent control has resulted in widespread exposure of non-target animals, with notable differences in susceptibility between species. Vitamin K reserves, which are essential for counteracting AR-induced coagulopathy, may partly explain this variability. This study assessed vitamin K status in 678 animals representing 31 mammalian and avian species. Hepatic concentrations of phylloquinone (K1) and menaquinone-4 (MK4) levels were quantified, revealing substantial interspecies variation influenced by dietary patterns and seasonal changes.

BACKGROUND: Rat populations in urban areas must be monitored and controlled, as they can transmit zoonotic diseases and pose a risk to human health. Certain urban rat species may not respond well to some of the rodenticides available on the market. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the efficacy of chlorophacinone in controlling urban rats in a laboratory setting.
METHODS: Chlorophacinone, the primary focus of this study, was compared to a commonly used first-generation anticoagulant rodenticide (FGAR) available in the urban market, namely Coumatetralyl. Rat specimens were trapped in Kuant

Poisoning from superwarfarin rodenticides should be considered in patients with unexplained bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency, with no other history of coagulopathy or anticoagulant use. A 37-year-old man originally presented to our hospital with two weeks of oral bleeding and two days of hematuria of unknown etiology. Workup showed severely prolonged prothrombin time and extremely low activity of coagulation factors II, VII, IX, and X, raising suspicion for vitamin K deficiency. His coagulation studies gradually corrected after daily administration of high-dose intravenous vitamin K. An an

Invasive rats threaten island biodiversity, disrupting ecosystems and endangering native species. Although rat eradication has succeeded on many islands, tropical islands present unique management challenges. Strict regulations and financial constraints on some tropical islands further limit proven eradication methods, complicating rodent management. We applied a real-time active adaptive management approach that provided a cautious, cost-efficient, and scientifically grounded pathway to rat eradication, while adhering to strict environmental regulations, on Ilha do Meio, Brazil. The cost was

This manuscript explores whether co-formulation of the second-generation anticoagulant bromadiolone with additives such as ciprofloxacin, vitamin D, aspirin, and cinnamon can enhance rodenticidal efficacy at reduced doses, while assessing hepatic pathomorphology, oxidative stress, coagulation, DNA damage, and apoptosis in wild rats. The study is both timely and relevant, addressing ecological and public health concerns by investigating mechanistic pathways including the p53-p21-caspase axis, lipid peroxidation, comet assay, prothrombin time, and serum enzyme levels. A key strength lies in its

Research on the impacts of rodents in Australian piggeries has been limited. While rodent impacts are often assumed, the economic impacts and management costs are not well measured. Although the disease risk is relatively well-known, regular assessments are lacking. This review and pilot study aimed to assess existing knowledge on rodent impacts and conduct a small pilot study to gather information on their rodent problems, economic impacts, and challenges faced. The goal was to develop management strategies without relying on rodenticides. Piggery owners' main concerns about rodents include (

INTRODUCTION: Brodifacoum, a potent long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide, causes severe coagulopathy by inhibiting vitamin K recycling, leading to life-threatening hemorrhage. We report a rare case of a large esophageal hematoma with upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the setting of brodifacoum poisoning.
CASE SUMMARY: A 73-year-old woman with depression presented with severe upper gastrointestinal bleeding with a large esophageal hematoma. Her coagulopathy was initially responsive to vitamin K1 but recurred after treatment discontinuation. Toxicology confirmed intentional long-acting antico

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) resistance in the Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi) poses significant challenges to rodent control in China, reducing efficacy of ARs and increasing environmental contamination risks to nontarget species. Although Vkorc1 mutations confer resistance in rodents, their prevalence and evolutionary origins have remained unclear in most R. tanezumi populations in China.
RESULTS: We sequenced the mitochondrial Cyt b, D-loop and Vkorc1 genes in different R. tanezumi populations. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed all sampled individuals were exclusively R. tane

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are a significant cause of global poisoning events. AR poisoning primarily manifests as multiorgan hemorrhage, while acute kidney injury (AKI) is exceedingly rare. Current understanding of the pathogenesis of AR-induced AKI remains insufficient, potentially leading to diagnostic and therapeutic delays and increasing the risk of progression to chronic kidney disease. This case report aims to describe the clinical characteristics, diagnostic process, and multidisciplinary treatment strategy of a patient with AKI induced by mixed brodifacoum and bromad

BACKGROUND: Management of severe anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning relies mainly on vitamin K1 (VK1) therapy, which often requires prolonged administration when long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides (LAARs) are involved.
KEY CLINICAL QUESTION: Can a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) be safely reintroduced in a patient at high risk of thrombosis recurrence whose LAAR poisoning is being managed with prolonged VK1 therapy?
CLINICAL APPROACH: We report the case of a patient receiving rivaroxaban for recurrent thrombosis who ingested massive amounts of brodifacoum, difenacoum, and difethialone

Anthropogenic modification of natural environments increasingly exposes wildlife to novel threats, including secondary poisoning from anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). Second-generation ARs (SGARs), widely used globally, bioaccumulate in non-target species, posing a significant risk to apex predators. In Australia, the powerful owl (Ninox strenua), a large forest owl listed as vulnerable in Victoria, shows widespread SGAR exposure, yet their precise exposure pathways are unclear. While it's often assumed raptors acquire SGARs from consuming poisoned rodents, powerful owls historically prey pre

Data collected by the Croatian Poison Control Centre (CPCC) in 2020 showed a significant increase in poisoning incidence with surface disinfectants and hand sanitisers compared to the same period in 2019. Considering that this rise in poisoning with biocidal products (BPs) coincided with the start of the COVID pandemic, we wanted to see if there was a trend by analysing six-years' worth of CPCC records of biocidal poisoning cases covering the COVID-19 pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic period (2019-2024). During that period, we received 1320 BP-related calls (8.0 % of a total of 16.441

Zinc phosphide (ZnP) is a rodenticide commonly used in agriculture for pest control, but it can cause acute human poisoning, through ingestion in suicide attempts. The toxicokinetics of ZnP are not well understood, although it is believed that its primary mechanism of toxicity involves the inhibition of Complex IV of Cytochrome C Oxidase, similar to aluminum phosphide (ALP) poisoning. However, there are notable differences between the two. The rarity of acute ZnP toxicity and the misconception that it mirrors ALP poisoning have hindered the development of effective treatment strategies. This r

The Saharan Striped Polecat (Carnivora, Mustelidae, Poecilictis libyca) is a small mustelid for which comprehensive biological studies and demographic data across its geographic range are lacking. Throughout 2018, we investigated the distribution, abundance, and threats to this species in Tunisia by means of a questionnaire survey, spotlighting, and collection of other field-based evidence. Our study resulted in 32 new records, including 1 outside the previously known range in the south, while a contraction of its northern limits was determined from historical records (literature, museum sampl

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the rat lungworm, is a metastrongyloid parasite that uses rodents as definitive hosts, mollusks as intermediate hosts, and a wide range of invertebrate and vertebrate species as paratenic hosts. Although this parasite poses a significant public health concern in many regions of the world, it can also cause disease in numerous domestic and wildlife aberrant host species. When parasite larvae are ingested by one of these aberrant hosts, larval migration in the central nervous system causes extensive damage, resulting in spinal cord and/or brain damage and
