An investigation of residues of organochlorine and organophosphorous pesticides, as well as of a number of fungicides and of inorganic bromide in 99 samples of black tea taken on the Danish market is reported. The type of pesticide residues involved appear to be very uniform within each country of origin, whereas there are distinct differences between individual countries. A pesticide patch test series was tested in 200 subjects, 50 of whom were agricultural workers. Positive reactions to fungicides were found in 24, almost all to thiophthalimides, especially captan, difolatan and folpet. Reactions to bis-dithiocarbamates and benomyl were rare, and to other pesticides not significant.

Natural and synthetic methylxanthines inhibit insect feeding and are pesticidal at concentrations known to occur in plants. These effects are due primarily to inhibition of phosphodiesterase activity and to an increase in intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate. At lower concentrations, methylxanthines are potent synergists of other pesticides known to activate adenylate cyclase in insects. These data suggest that methylxanthines may function as natural insecticides and that phosphodiesterase inhibitors, alone or in combination with other compounds, may be useful in insect control.

Spatial and temporal patterns of DBCP contamination of well water in eastern Fresno County were studied for the period 1979-1983. Associations were found between DBCP levels and land use, hydrological and geological variables and type of well. Large seasonal, monthly and daily fluctuations in DBCP concentrations appear to be due to well use patterns and time of sampling. These findings indicate that use of a formal sampling plan is essential for reliable monitoring of this and other pesticides in well water. Suggestions are made for improvements in the DBCP monitoring program in California.

In Charles River CD rats the pesticide MITAC 20 EC (containing amitraz and 75% xylene) given orally at an LD80 dose caused toxicity featuring hypothermia, reduced spontaneous activity, episodes of increased activity and minor signs of general debilitation. Combined action of Thiuram with Carbaryl, Propoxur, Pirimor, Chlorfenvinphos, Malathion, Lindane, and Carbendazine was investigated in rats. The effect of three doses (the lowest is the recommended dose in the field) of 5 pesticides namely: Ceresan, Orthocid (fungicides), VCS-438 (herbicide), and Dursban and Dipterex (insecticides) on the mycelial dry weight of Aspergillus fumigatus. Temporary accumulation of nitrite and nitrous oxide was observed in soil incubated under anaerobic conditions when derivatives of the insecticide chlordimeform [(N-4-chloro-o-tolyl)-N',N' -dimethylformamidine] were added. Ninety-nine soil samples from the rice-growing states of Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas were collected, primarily to monitor the herbicide propanil. During 1977, there were 289 pesticide exposure incidents involving animals that were handled by the Thomas J. Fleming Memorial Poison Information Center in Los Angeles. Almost all of this service was provided to veterinarians and most of the incidents involved dogs. This field study was undertaken to quantitate the exposures of peach pickers to pesticide residues. Five fields were harvested each for three days at decreasing post-application intervals. Aerosol and dermal exposure estimates indicated 98-99% of the workers' dose was dermal, predominantly to the hands and upper extremities.
