Vibrio alginolyticus is a significant opportunistic pathogen in marine environments, affecting both marine organisms and humans. The rise of antibiotic-resistant strains has prompted the exploration of bacteriophages as alternative biological control agents. In this study, 414 lytic bacteriophages specific to V. alginolyticus were isolated from various seafood and environmental samples. Phages P122, P125, and P160 demonstrated the broadest host range, effectively lysing 79.01 % of fish pathogenic V. alginolyticus strains and 44.69 % of environmental strains. However, no activity was observed a

BACKGROUND: Humans are exposed to mercury primarily in its highly toxic form, methyl mercury, which is known to have adverse effects on various organs and systems. The negative impact of mercury exposure on the growth, development, and mental health of children, from infancy to adolescence, is well-documented. However, there are no internationally standardized safe limits for mercury exposure. This study investigated the impact of dietary habits and higher body mass index (BMI) on blood mercury levels in adolescents.
METHODS: This study analyzed the data from the 4th Korean National Environme

This paper examines microplastic hotspots and their drastic effects on human health and the environment pointing out microplastic pollution as one of the biggest global issues. Besides, it analyses the key sources including industrial effluent discharge, littered plastic wastes, and deterioration of synthetic products together with pathways and routes of exposure. The review also focuses on microplastic contamination in food systems such as meat, plant-based products, dairy, and seafood, detailing their entry into the food chain via soil, water, and air. On the other hand, this work also focus

This study aims to elucidate the long-term physiological impacts of ocean acidification on a key seafood species. The Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, was subjected to three pH conditions over a period of six months: two pH values within the present range of natural variability (pHT: 8.10 and 7.80) and a lower pH condition (pHT: 7.50) relevant in the context of near-future ocean acidification. A comprehensive assessment was conducted at the conclusion of the fourth and sixth months and encompassed a suite of physiological endpoints, including mortality, oxygen consumption, clear

Shellfish are ubiquitous inhabitants of water environments and an important food source. Their presence in habitats affected by human activities and bioaccumulation potential support their use as indicators of contamination. Using these organisms as bioindicators may provide a simple, cost-effective alternative for monitoring contamination risk without requiring complex sample preparation and analytical procedures. However, there is no consensus on biomarkers, species selection, or standard methodologies. This systematic review explores the significance of shellfish as bioindicators, the metho

Fisheries and aquaculture play a crucial role in global food security, yet species mislabeling remains a persistent challenge, undermining consumer trust and market transparency. Proper food labeling is essential for protecting public health due to the presence of unknown toxic or allergenic substances and preventing illegally sourced products from entering the market. Despite extensive research across Europe, seafood mislabeling in Croatia has remained unexplored. This study aims to provide the first comprehensive assessment of seafood labeling accuracy in Croatia, where fisheries are integra

Oil seeps and spillage events can harm the environment in various ways. In the ocean, oil may form droplets or remain in the water column, becoming ingested by exposed species and potentially contaminating humans through seafood consumption. This study aimed to characterize and evaluate the toxicity of the water accommodated fraction (WAF) obtained from a solid soil-oil mass after the Brazilian oil spill of 2019 and its effects on enzymatic biomarkers in Artemia parthenogenetica. Cysts and nauplii were exposed to 100 %, 4 % and 0.16 % WAF for 48 h, with toxicological parameters and enzymatic a

Dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria produce saxitoxin (STX) and ~50 congeners that disrupt bioelectrical signals by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels (NaVs). Consuming seafood carrying these toxins causes paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). Although NaVs and anuran STX binding proteins (saxiphilins, Sxphs) use convergent STX binding modes, the structural basis for STX congener recognition is unknown. Here, we show that American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) RcSxph and High Himalaya frog (Nanorana parkeri) NpSxph sequester STX congeners using a 'lock and key' mode shared with STX. Importantly

The aim of this study was to assess the toxicity of heavy metals/metalloids, including arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury accumulated in the muscle of commonly consumed fish from the Cyprinidae. We discussed the importance of fatty acids in the human diet and investigated their profile in the muscle of different fish species. Additionally, our goal was to evaluate the benefits of fish consumption in relation to its risks, not only by considering the advantages of fatty acids and the drawbacks of heavy metal toxicity but also by examining how these pollutants may alter the fatty acid profile i

BACKGROUND: Saxitoxin (STX), one of the most toxic marine toxins known, poses severe risks to marine ecosystems and human health through contaminated seafood. Effective monitoring of STX is critical for early red tide warnings, marine conservation, and food safety. However, existing detection methods often lack sufficient sensitivity or require complex protocols, limiting their practicality for rapid on-site analysis. Therefore, there is a pressing need for a reliable and user-friendly strategy to detect trace levels of STX in the marine environment and to improve the accuracy of these measure

The Black Sea is a vital marine ecosystem increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pollutants, particularly toxic metals such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg). This study assesses the levels of these metals in Flexopecten glaber, a commercially and ecologically significant bivalve, over a temporal period of 2022-2024 in the western Black Sea. Samples were collected from four coastal regions at varying depths, and metal concentrations were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results indicate a significant increase in Cd (up to sixfold) and Pb (u

While meat consumption trends show decreases in some high-income countries, significant increases are observed elsewhere. Although this includes African nations, the average meat consumption in Africa remains generally lower than in many other continents, though patterns vary regionally. Meat provides essential nutrients, but inadequate consumption can pose health problems, while consumption also carries risks including potential exposure to environmental contaminants. This comprehensive review focuses on the recent scientific literature (published 2000-2024) regarding human exposure to specif

Despite the essential nutrients, maternal seafood consumption during pregnancy or lactation (PL) is also a potential source of toxins, including lead (Pb). The association between exposure to Pb from seafood during PL on children's neurodevelopment is uncertain. This systematic review assessed the association of exposure to Pb from seafood during PL on children's neurodevelopment. Embase, PubMed, CENTRAL, and PsycINFO were searched for English-language peer-reviewed articles. Two independent reviewers screened at title, abstract, and full-text levels. Despite the substantial amount of research on the presence of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs (PhIDs) in freshwater environments, there is a paucity of data on these contaminants in estuarine systems, particularly in South America. Industries, the biggest port in the Southern Hemisphere, and substantial urban areas surround the Santos-São Vicente Estuarine System (SSVES), located in a Brazilian subtropical area. This study constitutes the first assessment of contamination by PhIDs in this estuarine area. Samples of superficial water, sediments, and oysters were analyzed through liquid chroma

Mercury (Hg) is a global health concern due to its prevalence, persistence, and toxicity. Numerous studies have assessed Hg concentrations in seafood, but variability in reported concentrations highlights the need for continued monitoring and stricter regulations. We measured total Hg (tHg) in 148 pre-processed, packaged seafood products purchased in Raleigh, North Carolina, using thermal decomposition-gold amalgamation atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Products were grouped into three categories based on trophic ecology and physiology: (1) tuna, (2) other bony fish, and (3) shellfish and s

In this paper, the status of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is narratively reviewed from the perspective of toxicity mechanisms, biodistribution, species differences, human exposure sources, human biomonitoring, and epidemiology. Although toxicological investigations have been conducted, interspecies differences in toxicological mechanisms and toxicokinetics are not fully understood. For example, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARα) are a target receptor of PFAS. Although there are distinct differences in response between rodents and humans, human PPARα can be activa

The marine environment emerges as a key provider of food and sustainable products. However, these benefits are accompanied by numerous challenges owing to harmful algal blooms (HAB) and their associated biotoxins, which accumulate in organisms, like bivalves, threatening seafood quality. Among the various biotoxins, paralytic shellfish toxins (PST), the causative agents of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), are among the most potent, lethal, and frequently reported instances of human intoxication. Removing PST from marine system is particularly challenging because of their hydrophilicity, su

Polystyrene micro/nanoplastics (PS-MNPs) and microalgal toxins are widely distributed in marine environments. However, the impact of MNPs exposure on the accumulation of dissolved microalgal toxins in cultivated shellfish remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of PS-MNPs on the physiological status and diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs) accumulation in the filter-feeding bivalve Mytilus unguiculatus. Results demonstrated that exposure to PS-MNPs significantly altered the grazing rates, condition index, and oxidative stress responses of mussels. Specifically, MNPs at a c

Borbotoxin is an emergent biotoxin produced by Prorocentrum borbonicum and other related dinoflagellates. This toxin is known to produce neuromuscular effects in animal models and may pose risks to human health, although its molecular structure is still unknown. Strains of Prorocentrum borbonicum isolated from the northeastern Brazilian coast were analyzed by reversed phase liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. Cell pellets were extracted with methanol and water with the aid of an ultrasonic bath. Multiple reaction monitoring mode was used to search for borbotoxin A and B
