Histamine intolerance is a common disorder associated with an impaired histamine metabolism. It should be considered in individuals with sporadic or repeated anaphylaxis-like symptoms after seafood consumption. We encountered a 26-year-old male patient who experienced recurrent episodes of anaphylaxis-like symptoms after ingesting seafood. A detailed history-taking and a histamine 50-skin-prick test confirmed the diagnosis of histamine intolerance. In addition, a low-histamine diet and prophylactic antihistamine medication did not result in symptom recurrence. Proper management of histamine in

This study investigated whether marine toxin poisonings reported to U.S. Poison Centers changed during the height of the pandemic period (April 2020 to December 2021). The National Poison Data System was queried for single-substance human exposure calls between 1 January 2000 and 31 March 2022 pertaining to ichthyosarcotoxins. Incidence rate ratios for exposure calls were calculated using mixed-effects negative binomial regression. Call counts were aggregated by year and regressed on a binary indicator for occurrence during pandemic restrictions. During the peak pandemic period, exposure calls

BACKGROUND: Histamine intoxication, initially described as scombroid fish poisoning, is now recognized as histamine intolerance (HIT), a condition associated with impaired histamine metabolism, often due to diamine oxidase (DAO) deficiency. HIT presents with nonspecific gastrointestinal and systemic symptoms, frequently overlooked in clinical practice. While extraintestinal manifestations are well-documented, oral findings have not been previously described.
OBJECTIVE: This short communication presents the first reported cases of HIT diagnosed through oral lesions, providing a brief review of

Food toxicity is a common cause of morbidity worldwide. Presentations of food toxicity can take diverse forms, depending on the underlying mechanisms. Scombroid is one of the most frequent forms of food toxicity; however, its exact incidence remains unknown owing to similarities with other pathologies. Scombroid is a type of food poisoning caused by the ectopic consumption of histamine that mimics angioedema. Here, we present the case of a 36-year-old male patient who presented to the emergency department (ED) after consuming tuna, with a clinical picture of generalized erythema accompanied by

We describe the case of a 58-year-old patient who developed chest pain and an anaphylaktoide reaction after ingestion of contamined fish containing histamin. Histamin intoxication from food poisoning (also known as scombroid intoxication) can be mistaken for an anaphylactic reaction and occasionaly lead to cardiac symptoms, even in patients without atherosclerotic changes. This condition is called Kounis syndrom and has to be recognized as a separate syndrom with specific clinical features.

This study aimed to investigate histamine exposure associated with consumption of fresh tuna and tuna-like species in West Java, and to estimate risk of Scombroid Fish Poisoning (SFP) in Indonesia. A range of species, including tuna (Thunnus spp.), bullet tuna (Auxis sp.), and skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) were collected from local markets and fish landing sites. Subsequently, histamine concentrations were determined using NMR analysis and exposure was calculated in mg/day for toddlers, children, and adults. The results showed that skipjack had the highest histamine exposure for all age groups

Seafood is one of the essential sources of nutrients for the human diet. However, they can be subject to contamination and can cause foodborne illnesses, including scombroid fish poisoning caused by histamine. Many microorganisms can produce enzymes that eventually decompose endogenous histidine to histamine in postmortem fish muscles and tissues. One of these is histamine-forming bacteria (HFB), primarily found in the gills, gut, and skin of fishes. Previous studies linked a plethora of Gram-negative HFB including Morganella spp. and Photobacterium spp. to scombroid fish poisoning from many t

The consumption of fishery products has been steadily increasing in recent decades. Among the quantitatively more important species, the yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), is one of the main at-risk species as regards the possibility to present important levels of histamine and to be associated with the so-called “Scombroid Fish Poisoning”. The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the colorimetric parameters, the occurrence, and the quantification of histamine contamination in yellowfin tuna samples marketed in Sardinia (Italy) by a combination of rapid screening and official control

INTRODUCTION: Histamine intoxication, known as scombroid fish poisoning, is caused by the consumption of foods with high levels of histamine. This biogenic amine is formed as a result of histidine decarboxylation by bacterial decarboxylases present in food, including fish and fish products. The aim of this study was to investigate the content of histamine at different production stages of canned, marinated and smoked fish.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Raw fish, semi-finished fish products, and the final products of the same production batches were collected between 2019 and 2022 from different fish

Scombroid fish poisoning (SFP), the most common fish-related illness worldwide, is a histamine response caused by the heat stable toxin histamine. A healthy 48-year-old woman and co-author of this paper developed palpitations, tachycardia and hypotension 10 min after a tuna steak dinner. She subsequently developed numbness of her face, flushing, conjunctival erythema, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache and chest pain. Her ECG revealed tachycardia with ST depression. Her hypotension did not respond to fluid resuscitation, and she required phenylephrine. Based on exposure hist

The Food Safety Act of the Philippines strengthens the welfare of consumer's health by protecting the public from foodborne illnesses such as scombroid fish poisoning due to unusually high levels of histamine. The present study investigated the formation of histamine substance in driedsalted fish products that were sold in different local supermarkets of Samar. A total of fifty samples of dried-salted fish samples were used to analyze the histamine substance. Results of the analysis revealed that 81.3% are detected beyond the regulatory limits of 200.0mg/kg by the Bureau of Food and Drugs-Phil

UNLABELLED: Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is a significant global health threat that leads to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. While antiviral therapies have advanced over the years, they face challenges such as the high cost, drug resistance, and the absence of a prophylactic vaccine. This study focused on developing a new multi-epitope-based vaccine using in-silico methods targeting the conserved NS5B protein of HCV, known for its crucial role in viral replication. Identification and screening of B-cell and T-cell epitopes as highly antigenic, immunogenic, and non-al

One Case for Two Abstract. We report on a 59-year-old patient with a rash, hypotension and chest pain after eating tuna fish. A diagnosis of scombroid fish poisoning was made. It is a syndrome resembling an allergic reaction that occurs after eating fish of the Scombridae family contaminated with high levels of histamine. The authorities responsible for food safety should be immediately informed in order to investigate the event from their perspective, i.e. inspect selling premises, sample and test implicated food, as well as to take appropriate measures. Anaphylaxis rarely manifests as a vaso

Scombroid fish poisoning caused by histamine intoxication is one of the most prevalent allergies associated with seafood consumption in the United States. Typical symptoms range from mild itching up to fatal cardiovascular collapse seen in anaphylaxis. In this paper, we demonstrate rapid, sensitive, and quantitative detection of histamine in both artificially spoiled tuna solution and real spoiled tuna samples using thin layer chromatography in tandem with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (TLC-SERS) sensing methods, enabled by machine learning analysis based on support vector regression (SVR)

In contaminated fish, bacterial decarboxylases produce histamine from histidine, thereby causing scombroid fish poisoning. European Regulation (EC) No 2073/2005 on microbiological criteria for foodstuffs requires using a fully validated, standardized reference HPLC method for detecting and quantifying histamine. After optimizing this reference method for the quantification of histamine in fish muscle, we organized an inter-laboratory study in 2013 across nine laboratories from seven European countries using defined criteria of method performance. The optimized, validated method was standardize

BACKGROUND: In November 2016, an outbreak of scombroid fish poisoning occurred among elementary school students in Seoul, Korea. An epidemiological investigation was conducted to identify the cause and source of the illness.
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted among school members who had eaten lunch in the school. The histamine level in the suspect food item (yellowtail steak) was measured.
RESULTS: Fifty-five (5.4%) of 1,017 school members who consumed fish for lunch fell ill. The principal symptoms were flushing (100%) and headache (72.7%); the median incubation period was 40 minu

Histamine fish poisoning, also known as scombroid poisoning, is the most common cause of ichythyotoxicosis worldwide and results from the ingestion of histamine-contaminated fish in the Scombroidae and Scomberesocidae families, including mackerel, bonito, albacore, and skipjack. This disease was first described in 1799 in Britain and re-emerged in the medical literature in the 1950s when outbreaks were reported in Japan. The symptoms associated with histamine fish poisoning are similar to that of an allergic reaction. In fact, such histamine-induced reactions are often misdiagnosed as IgE-medi
