Toxic metals and genetic polymorphism in indigenous populations of northern Asia and America.

The polymorphism of genes encoding enzymes involved in heavy metal metabolism was analyzed in indigenous Siberian populations based on the mercury, lead, and cadmium contents in the blood of Canadian Inuit carrying different genotypes. Additionally, we examined the polymorphism of genetic loci associated with sensitivity to arsenic exposure in indigenous Siberian populations using data on inorganic arsenic content in the urine of indigenous Andean populations who had consumed drinking water with elevated arsenic levels for thousands of years. A population genetic approach was used to seek gene

Low levels of munition compounds in commercially-available seafood from the North Sea and Baltic Sea pose limited risk to human seafood consumers.

Relic munitions from World Wars I and II contaminate coastal waters worldwide. Toxic chemicals such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) from underwater munitions (munition compounds, MCs) pose a risk to marine ecosystems and potentially human seafood consumers. Uptake of MCs by aquatic organisms and subsequent toxic effects have been shown in laboratory experiments and in field-collected samples of demersal fish and mussels, but the risk to human seafood consumers is not yet clear. Here, we report MC analyses of commercially-available fish from the North and Baltic Seas. Mercury (Hg) was also measu

Health risks of exposure to organotin compounds via seafood consumption after their legal ban.

Organotin compounds (OTs), persistent environmental toxicants, were historically used in antifouling paints and have been banned on vessel hulls in Hong Kong since 2017. This study tested the hypothesis that OTs in seafood from Hong Kong waters, along with their associated dietary human health risks, declined six years post the legislation and enforcement. Analysis of 23 marine species collected in 2023, including molluscs, crustaceans, and fishes revealed total OTs concentrations of 11.8-747 ng/g ww, with the highest in benthic feeding fish Gerres septemfasciatus (747 ± 133 ng/g ww) and the c

Toxic trace elements in fish and seafood from North African coasts: A systematic review and meta-analysis of contamination levels and health risk assessment.

Seafood products contaminated with toxic trace elements can pose serious health risks to consumers. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the pooled levels of five toxic trace elements lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), and arsenic (As) in the edible muscle of fish and other seafood from North African coasts and to evaluate the associated health risks. A systematic search of electronic databases was conducted to identify relevant studies published between 1986 and 2025. A random-effects model was applied to pool the concentrations of each toxic trace element using the meta

Saxiphilin functions as a toxin sponge protein that counteracts the effects of saxitoxin poisoning.

Saxitoxin (STX) is among the most potent toxins known, is classified as a chemical weapon, and is the archetype of the paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) family produced by marine and freshwater harmful algal blooms (HAB). STX causes paralysis and death through inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels (NaVs), has no antidote, and poses a public health and commercial fishing threat due to its accumulation in seafood and increasing HAB occurrences. Although STX is lethal to varied vertebrates, including humans, certain frogs resist STX poisoning. This phenotype is thought to depend on soluble to

A comprehensive overview of the formation of biogenic amines in seafood.

Biogenic amines are low-molecular-weight organic compounds with aliphatic, aromatic, or heterocyclic structures that are produced through various metabolic activities of plants, animals, and microorganisms and may also occur naturally in foods. These compounds are mainly formed through the decarboxylation of amino acids, The formation of biogenic amines in foods by bacteria primarily depends on the availability of free amino acids, the presence of microorganisms possessing decarboxylase activity, and environmental conditions that support microbial growth. Since many protein-rich foods are susc

Determination of microplastic-mediated oxidative stress responses and DNA damage in economically important fish species in the largest dam lakes (Keban, Karakaya, and Atatürk) of Türkiye.

MP contamination and biomarkers were investigated in the economic importance fish species (Luciobarbus esocinus Heckel, 1843, Arabibarbus grypus Heckel, 1843 and Cyprinus carpio, Linnaeus, 1758). When MP content was considered, the highest MP concentration was found in the digestive system, followed by the gills, liver, and muscle tissue, respectively. Although regional and species-specific variations were observed in fish tissues, the predominant colors were blue and black, the predominant sizes were 151-500 µm and 501-3,000 µm, the predominant shapes were fragments and fibers, and the predom

Potentially toxic elements in multi-stressor marine environments: bioaccumulation, ecosystem impacts, and human health implications.

Potentially toxic elements pollution in marine environments is intensifying under anthropogenic activities and climate-driven changes, yet the interactive effects of multiple stressors on metal bioaccumulation, ecosystem health, and human risk remain inadequately synthesized. This review aims to quantitatively integrate multi-stressor interactions involving ocean warming, acidification, and eutrophication with potentially toxic elements dynamics across coastal, estuarine, and open ocean systems. Following PRISMA guidelines, 154 peer-reviewed studies from 652 screened records were synthesized t

Characteristics of patients hospitalized for diabetic foot in a national hospital in Peru, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

Proteolytic Clostridium botulinum (group I) - evaluation of predictive models for time-to-toxicity and identification of product characteristics that prevent growth and toxin formation in different types of foods.

Preventing toxin formation by proteolytic Clostridium botulinum is critical for food safety but remains a challenge for example when developing or reformulating various products including sodium-reduced or nitrite-free foods. Validated predictive food microbiology models can support this process by identifying combinations of product characteristics and storage conditions that prevent growth and toxin formation. An existing cardinal parameter growth and growth boundary model (Koukou et al., 2022b), including the effect of 11 environmental factors and their interactions, was extended to predict

A novel approach to assessing the joint effects of mercury and fish consumption on neurodevelopment in the New Bedford Cohort.

Understanding health risks from methylmercury (MeHg) exposure is complicated by its link to fish consumption, which may confound or modify toxicities. One solution is to include fish intake and a biomarker of MeHg exposure in the same analytical model, but resulting estimates do not reflect the independent impact of accumulated MeHg or fish exposure. In fish-eating populations, this can be addressed by separating MeHg exposure into fish intake and average mercury content of the consumed fish. We assessed the joint association of prenatal MeHg exposure (maternal hair mercury level) and fish int

Toxicity assessment of DMSO extracts of environmental aged beached plastics using human cell lines.

Plastic products contain complex mixtures of chemical compounds that are incorporated into polymers to improve material properties. Besides the intentional chemical additives, other compounds including residual monomers and non-intentionnaly added substances (NIAS) as well as sorbed pollutants are usually also present in aged plastic. Since most of these substances are only loosely bound to the polymer via non-covalently interactions, i.e., van der Waals forces, they may leach to the surrounding environment. Although there is increasing knowledge about toxicity of weathered plastic to aquatic

New Perspectives on Canned Fish Quality and Safety on the Road to Sustainability.

Canning extends the shelf life of seafood products while preserving their quality. It is increasingly considered a more sustainable food processing method due to the primary fishing methods used for key species and the lower energy costs compared to the production of fresh and frozen fish. However, canning can change key components, allow some contaminants to persist, and generate undesirable compounds. This review revisits the effects of canning on product quality and highlights the potential hazards that may compromise safety. It also examines emerging trends in product development, particul

Isolation, characterization and genomic analysis of bacteriophages for biocontrol of vibriosis caused by Vibrio alginolyticus.

Vibrio alginolyticus is a significant opportunistic pathogen in marine environments, affecting both marine organisms and humans. The rise of antibiotic-resistant strains has prompted the exploration of bacteriophages as alternative biological control agents. In this study, 414 lytic bacteriophages specific to V. alginolyticus were isolated from various seafood and environmental samples. Phages P122, P125, and P160 demonstrated the broadest host range, effectively lysing 79.01 % of fish pathogenic V. alginolyticus strains and 44.69 % of environmental strains. However, no activity was observed a

Association of weight and dietary habits with high blood mercury levels in Korean adolescents: data from the KoNEHS cycle 4, 2018-2020.

BACKGROUND: Humans are exposed to mercury primarily in its highly toxic form, methyl mercury, which is known to have adverse effects on various organs and systems. The negative impact of mercury exposure on the growth, development, and mental health of children, from infancy to adolescence, is well-documented. However, there are no internationally standardized safe limits for mercury exposure. This study investigated the impact of dietary habits and higher body mass index (BMI) on blood mercury levels in adolescents. METHODS: This study analyzed the data from the 4th Korean National Environme
