Ciliates are known to directly influence the performance of wastewater treatment plants mainly by feeding on suspended particles. By monitoring two lab-scale sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBR), one filled with expanded shale (clay spheres), the other with "Kaldnes" particles (PE-carriers), the succession of biofilm communities with special emphasis on ciliates was monitored for one year. We studied the feeding ecology of the black howler monkey (Alouatta pigra) from March 1994 to April 1995 in the Community Baboon Sanctuary in northern Belize, Central America. Activity and diet composition were recorded using continuous focal animal sampling. This study investigated the effect of prolonged ingestion of Leucaena leucocephala, a leguminous shrub with a potential as a source of animal feed in Southern Taiwan, by heifers on serum thyroid hormone levels. Ten crossbred beef heifers were divided into treated (grazing Hawaiian wildtype leucaena) and control (grazing Pangola grass only) groups of 5 animals each. The heifers grazing leucaena exhibited significantly (P less than 0.001) lower serum total triiodothyronine levels and also showed a tendency (P less than 0.10) for a lower thyroxine level. The eight monkey species occurring in Surinam were studied in the Raleigh-vallen-Voltzberg Nature Reserve along the Coppename River.
