Thamnophis sirtalis and their toxic relationship: Testing for intraspecific venom variation in Common Garter Snakes.

Intraspecific phenotypic variation can be used as a window into the ecological differences among individuals of a species and lead to a better understanding of adaptive evolution. Adaptive traits, such as venom, that play an important ecological role for a species are useful models for understanding the sources of intraspecific variation. Intraspecific studies on front-fanged venomous snakes have offered deeper insights into the diverse mechanisms and adaptations that support the effectiveness of venom across species. Despite the extensive research on front-fanged venomous snakes, rear-fanged

Hooding cobras can get ahead of other snakes in the ability to evoke human fear.

Fear of snakes is common not only in humans but also in other primates. Consequently, snakes are salient stimuli associated with prioritized attention, early detection and emotional significance. This has been interpreted as an adaptive evolutionary response of the primate brain to a risk of envenoming by a hidden snake. However, the struggle between mammals and snakes is not one-sided. Humans and carnivores regularly kill snakes, and thus snakes develop deterring defensive behaviour that may directly evoke enhanced fear. Here, we show that snakes depicted in threatening posture evoked on aver

Venom proteomics and Duvernoy's venom gland histology of Pseudoboa neuwiedii (Neuwied's false boa; Dipsadidae, Pseudoboini).

The venom of Colombian specimens of the rear-fanged snake Pseudoboa neuwiedii contains proteolytic and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activities, but is devoid of esterases. Mass spectrometric analysis of electrophoretic bands indicated that this venom contains C-type lectins (CTL), cysteine-rich secretory proteins (CRiSP), PLA2, snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMP), and snake venom matrix metalloproteinases (svMMP). In this investigation, we extended our characterization of P. neuwiedii by undertaking a shotgun proteomic analysis of the venom and comparing the results with a transcriptomic database

Exploring the Venom Gland Transcriptome of Bothrops asper and Bothrops jararaca: De Novo Assembly and Analysis of Novel Toxic Proteins.

Previous proteomic studies of viperid venom revealed that it is mainly composed of metalloproteinases (SVMPs), serine proteinases (SVSPs), phospholipase A2 (PLA2), and C-type lectins (CTLs). However, other proteins appear in minor amounts that affect prey and need to be identified. This study aimed to identify novel toxic proteins in the venom gland transcriptome of Bothrops asper and Bothrops jararaca, using data from NCBI. Bioinformatics tools were used to assemble, identify, and compare potentially novel proteins in both species, and we performed functional annotation with BLASTX against th

Age Is Just a Number: Ontogenetic Conservation in Activation of Blood Clotting Factors VII, X, and XII by Caucasus Blunt-Nosed Viper (Macrovipera lebetina obtusa) Venoms.

This study examined the pathophysiological effects of venoms from neonate and adult specimens of the viperid snake Macrovipera lebetina obtusa, focusing on their ability to activate various blood clotting factors in human plasma. All venoms exhibited strong procoagulant properties. In concentration-response tests, the clotting potency of the neonate venoms fell within the range of their parents' maximum clotting velocities and areas under the curve. Intriguingly, females were more potent than males within each age group, but this requires a larger sample size to confirm. Antivenom neutralizati

Anaphylaxis as probable cause of death in a rare case of fatal Vipera berus bite.

This case report describes the death of a 52-year-old male who was bitten by a venomous snake, Vipera berus (common European adder), on his left wrist. Despite experiencing symptoms, the patient refused medical care and self-medicated with alcohol instead. He was later found dead in his residence. Autopsy and histological examination revealed evidence of an anaphylactic reaction in response to the snake bite, with additional findings of alcohol intoxication and other underlying medical conditions.

A case of Western Gaboon viper (Bitis rhinoceros) envenomation: Successful treatment with South African Institute for Medical Research (SAIMR) antivenom after North American crotalid antivenom failure.

We report a case of Western Gaboon viper (Bitis rhinoceros) envenomation in which the patient's symptoms progressed despite treatment with North American crotalid antivenom but improved after receiving South African Institute for Medical Research (SAIMR) polyvalent antivenom. A 59-year-old man was hospitalized after reportedly being bitten by a Gaboon viper (Bitis gabonica). On arrival, he had normal vital signs, two puncture wounds on his left hand, and edema distal to the wrist. The hospital contacted the local poison center who conveyed that crotalid antivenom would be ineffective and recom

Seasonality in Crotalus durissus venom.

Rattlesnakes belonging to the genus Crotalus are widely distributed throughout the Americas. In Brazil, symptoms commonly associated with envenomation by Crotalus durissus collilineatus include myalgia, rhabdomyolysis, renal failure, neurotoxicity, and progressive paralysis, which are related to the protein composition of this venom. Snake venom composition exhibits compositional variability that may reflect geographic distribution, age, captivity, diet, sex, and even individual genetics. Although seasonality is also considered a possible source of variation, there are few reports of such vari

Microenvironment Remodeling Self-Healing Hydrogel for Promoting Flap Survival.

Ultrasonography is an established method for imaging peripheral nerves. It serves to supplement the physical examination, electromyography, and magnetic resonance imaging. It enables the identification of post-traumatic changes of nerves, neuropathies secondary to compression syndromes, inflammatory or neoplastic nerve lesions as well as the evaluation of postoperative complications. In certain situations, this technique is the imaging method of choice. It is increasingly used in anesthesiology for regional anesthesia. As in the case of other ultrasound imaging studies, the examination of peri

Occupational anaphylaxis: A Position Paper of the German Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (DGAKI).

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis is a systemic allergic reaction that is potentially life-threatening. Occupational anaphylaxis is an anaphylaxis that occurs in an occupational context. In this position paper, we propose diagnostic criteria for occupational anaphylaxis and provide an overview of the current state of knowledge in terms of prevalence, triggers, prevention, and management. RESULTS: The most common triggers of occupational anaphylaxis include Hymenoptera venoms, followed by food and drugs. Chemicals, bites or contact with animals (mammals/snakes/insects) and natural rubber latex are far l

A small venomous reptile from the Late Triassic (Norian) of the southwestern United States.

Reptile feeding strategies encompass a wide variety of diets and accompanying diversity in methods for subduing prey. One such strategy, the use of venom for prey capture, is found in living reptile clades like helodermatid (beaded) lizards and some groups of snakes, and venom secreting glands are also present in some monitor lizards and iguanians. The fossil record of some of these groups shows strong evidence for venom use, and this feeding strategy also has been hypothesized for a variety of extinct reptiles (e.g., archosauromorphs, anguimorphs, and a sphenodontian). However, evidence of sy

Platelet aggregation inhibitors from Bothrops alternatus snake venom.

Snake venoms are a complex mixture of proteins and peptides that can activate/inhibit platelet aggregation. Bothrops alternatus venom include three main families: metalloproteinases (SVMPs), serinoproteinases (SVSPs) and phospholipases A2 (PLA2s), among other minor components. In this work, we used inhibitor cocktails (containing Na2-EDTA, PMSF and/or pBPB) to investigate the effect of these three families and of baltergin (a PIII SVMP) on platelet aggregation by a turbidmetric method using a microplate reader. Cocktails 1 (active SVMPs) and 2 (active PLA2s) significantly reduced aggregation i

Lys49 myotoxins, secreted phospholipase A2-like proteins of viperid venoms: A comprehensive review.

Muscle necrosis is a potential clinical complication of snakebite envenomings, which in severe cases can lead to functional or physical sequelae such as disability or amputation. Snake venom proteins with the ability to directly damage skeletal muscle fibers are collectively referred to as myotoxins, and include three main types: cytolysins of the "three-finger toxin" protein family expressed in many elapid venoms, the so-called "small" myotoxins found in a number of rattlesnake venoms, and the widespread secreted phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) molecules. Among the latter, protein variants that cons

Venom comparisons of endemic and micro-endemic speckled rattlesnakes Crotalus mitchellii, C. polisi and C. thalassoporus from Baja California Peninsula.

A high diversity of rattlesnake species can be found in the Baja California peninsula and the island of the Gulf of California, nevertheless, their venom has been poorly evaluated. The aim of this work was to present the first characterization of endemic Crotalus mitchellii, micro endemic C. polisi and C. thalassoporus venoms. All samples provoke human plasma coagulation showing doses in the rank of 2.3-41.0 μg and also produce rapid hydrolysis of the alpha chain of bovine fibrinogen while the beta chain is attacked at larger incubation periods by C. polisi and especially by C. thalassoporus.

Montane Rattlesnakes in México: Venoms of Crotalus tancitarensis and Related Species within the Crotalus intermedius Group.

The Crotalus intermedius group is a clade of rattlesnakes consisting of several species adapted to a high elevation habitat, primarily in México. Crotalus tancitarensis was previously classified as C. intermedius, until individuals occurring on Cerro Tancítaro in Michoacán, México, were reevaluated and classified as a new species (C. tancitarensis) based on scale pattern and geographic location. This study aimed to characterize the venom of C. tancitarensis and compare the venom profile to those of other species within the Crotalus intermedius group using gel electrophoresis, biochemical assay

The use of serum protein analysis in the diagnosis of fatal envenomation via Crotalus horridus (timber rattlesnake).

Deaths occurring due to rattlesnake envenomization are extremely rare and must be thoroughly investigated in the same manner as any other type of death. Our research presents the case of an adult white male who suffered a fatal timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) envenomation in northwest Florida in 2018. Blood samples were taken from the decedent's heart and vasculature of the chest and sent for serum proteomic analysis. Serum proteomic analysis was utilized in order to identify proteins from timber rattlesnake (C. horridus) found within the victim's blood. The confirmation of the presence

A generalized framework for estimating snakebite underreporting using statistical models: A study in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenoming is a neglected tropical disease affecting deprived populations, and its burden is underestimated in some regions where patients prefer using traditional medicine, case reporting systems are deficient, or health systems are inaccessible to at-risk populations. Thus, the development of strategies to optimize disease management is a major challenge. We propose a framework that can be used to estimate total snakebite incidence at a fine political scale. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: First, we generated fine-scale snakebite risk maps based on the distribution of
