Exotic snake envenomations are increasingly encountered in the United States (US) due to the growing ownership of non-native venomous reptiles. We report the case of a 49-year-old man bitten by his own Sri Lankan green pit viper (Craspedocephalus trigonocephalus, formerly Trimeresurus trigonocephalus). The patient presented to the emergency department (ED) with rapid-onset, severe local pain and swelling extending from the bite site on his finger into the wrist. He also reported dizziness and numbness. Laboratory results were within normal limits. Poison control was contacted, and a clinical t

Bothrops atrox is responsible for most snakebite envenomations in the Amazon region. Its venom induces systemic hemostatic disturbances and local tissue damage, potentially leading to severe complications. This report describes a fatal case of B. atrox envenomation in a 53-year-old male with a history of hypertension and alcoholism. The patient presented with persistent incoagulable blood, thrombocytopenia, anemia, and progressive renal dysfunction. These findings were consistent with venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC) associated with thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). He subsequentl

Peripheral arterial chemoreceptors monitor the levels of arterial blood gases and adjust ventilation and perfusion to meet metabolic demands. These chemoreceptors are present in all vertebrates studied to date but have not been described fully in reptiles other than turtles. The goals of this study were to (1) identify functional chemosensory areas in the South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus), (2) determine the neurochemical content of putative chemosensory cells in these areas and (3) determine the role each area plays in ventilatory and cardiovascular control. To this end, rattlesna

Snakebite envenomation is a neglected tropical disease with major health impacts in Latin America, where Bothrops species are responsible for vast majority of accidents. Among them, Bothrops mattogrossensis is epidemiologically relevant due to its wide distribution and clinical involvement in envenomation. This study aimed to characterize the histopathological and biochemical effects of B. mattogrossensis venom (BmV) and its isolated acidic phospholipase A₂ (BmPLA₂-A) in mice. Skeletal muscle, heart, lung, liver, kidney, and spleen were analyzed histologically, while local toxic effects were a

Haemotoxicity is the most common complication of systemic envenoming following snakebite, leading to diverse clinical syndromes ranging from haemorrhagic to prothrombotic manifestations. Key haematological abnormalities include platelet dysfunction, venom-induced consumption coagulopathy, anticoagulant coagulopathy and organ-threatening thrombotic microangiopathy. Diagnostic methods include the bedside whole blood clotting test, laboratory coagulation screening and other advanced methods such as thromboelastogram and clot strength analysis. The primary management strategies are venom neutralis

Snakebite envenomation is a neglected public health issue affecting thousands of victims worldwide. In Brazil, the genus Bothrops is responsible for 88 % of snakebites; bites from the species B. jararacussu present at a high frequency and are associated with high lethality and morbidity rates. B. jararacussu injects a large volume of venom, leading to massive tissue necrosis, hemorrhage, and eventually death. Antivenom is the only available treatment for neutralizing such toxic effects; it effectively prevents death but not the physical sequelae caused by muscle damage. Antivenom has other dra

There is a paucity of consensus regarding the occurrence of reproductive disorders after the utilization of antimalarial. The objective of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of an established pharmaceutical agent (Amatem) and a traditional herbal remedy (Mangifera indica), which is commonly utilized for the treatment of malaria, with respect to their impact on male reproductive hormones. The primary research question guiding this study was to ascertain which of these agents would offer protection against adverse effects on reproductive parameters. The present study utilized a sam

Snake envenoming is a major, but neglected, tropical disease. Among venomous snakes, those inducing neurotoxicity such as kraits (Bungarus genus) cause a potentially lethal peripheral neuroparalysis with respiratory deficit in a large number of people each year. In order to prevent the development of a deadly respiratory paralysis, hospitalization with pulmonary ventilation and use of antivenoms are the primary therapies currently employed. However, hospitals are frequently out of reach for envenomated patients and there is a general consensus that additional, non-expensive treatments, deliver

Successful snakebite envenoming (SBE) treatment requires safe, effective, and quality-assured antivenom products specifically tailored to combat endemic venomous snake species. This study aims to identify the challenges associated with the availability, accessibility, and use of antivenoms for treating SBE. The data for this study were obtained from a cross-sectional study involving healthcare workers from two districts (namely Afram Plains North and Afram Plains South) in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Through the MaxDiff design methodology, we quantify the challenges associated with the availa

Using diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography (diceCT), we examined the morphology of the oral glands of 12 species of the family Homalopsidae. Snakes of this family exhibit substantial interspecific morphological variation in their oral glands. Particular variables are the venom glands, ranging from large (e.g., Subsessor bocourti) to small (e.g., Erpeton tentaculatum). The supra- and infralabial glands are more uniform in morphology, being the second most developed in almost all the sampled species. Premaxillary glands distinct from the supralabial glands were observed

The Australian elapid snake radiation (Hydrophiinae) has evolved in the absence of competition from other advanced snakes. This has resulted in ecological specialisation in Australian elapids and the potential for venom proteomes divergent to other elapids. We characterised the venom of the Australian elapid Vermicella annulata (eastern bandy bandy). The venom was analysed using a two-dimensional fractionation process consisting of reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography then sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, followed by bottom-up proteomics. Resulting pe

Bothrops and Lachesis are two of Brazil's medically most relevant snake genera, causing tens of thousands of bites annually. Fortunately, Brazil has good accessibility to high-quality antivenoms at the genus and inter-genus level, enabling the treatment of many of these envenomings. However, the optimal use of these treatments requires that the snake species responsible for the bite is determined. Currently, physicians use a syndromic approach to diagnose snakebite, which can be difficult for medical personnel with limited training in clinical snakebite management. In this work, we have develo

Painted turtles are remarkable for their freeze tolerance and supercooling ability along with their associated resilience to hypoxia/anoxia and oxidative stress, rendering them an ideal biomedical model for hypoxia-induced injuries (including strokes), tissue cooling during surgeries, and organ cryopreservation. Yet, such research is hindered by their seasonal reproduction and slow maturation. Here we developed and characterized adult stem cell-derived turtle liver organoids (3D self-assembled in vitro structures) from painted, snapping, and spiny softshell turtles spanning ~175My of evolution

Snake venoms have evolved in several families of Caenophidae, and their toxins have been assumed to be biochemical weapons with a role as a trophic adaptation. However, it remains unclear how venom contributes to the success of venomous species for adaptation to different environments. Here we compared the venoms from Bothrocophias hyoprora, Bothrops taeniatus, Bothrops bilineatus smaragdinus, Bothrops brazili, and Bothrops atrox collected in the Amazon Rainforest, aiming to understand the ecological and toxinological consequences of venom composition. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses ind

Phospholipases A2 (PLA2s) are a large family of snake toxins manifesting diverse biological effects, which are not always related to phospholipolytic activity. Snake venom PLA2s (svPLA2s) are extracellular proteins with a molecular mass of 13-14 kDa. They are present in venoms in the form of monomers, dimers, and larger oligomers. The cardiovascular system is one of the multiple svPLA2 targets in prey organisms. The results obtained previously on the cardiovascular effects of monomeric svPLA2s were inconsistent, while the data on the dimeric svPLA2 crotoxin from the rattlesnake Crotalus duriss

Our study quantifies venom production in nine Mexican coral snake species (Micrurus), encompassing 76 specimens and 253 extractions. Noteworthy variations were observed, with M. diastema and M. laticollaris displaying diverse yields, ranging from 0.3 mg to 59 mg. For animals for which we have length data, there is a relationship between size and venom quantity. Twenty-eight percent of the observed variability in venom production can be explained by snake size, suggesting that other factors influence the amount of obtained venom. These findings are pivotal for predicting venom effects and guidi

The interplay between predator and prey has catalyzed the evolution of venom systems, with predators honing their venoms in response to the evolving resistance of prey. A previous study showed that the African varanid species Varanus exanthematicus has heightened resistance to snake venoms compared to the Australian species V. giganteus, V. komodoensis, and V. mertensi, likely due to increased predation by sympatric venomous snakes on V. exanthematicus. To understand venom resistance among varanid lizards, we analyzed the receptor site targeted by venoms in 27 varanid lizards, including 25 Aus

BACKGROUND: The Western diamondback rattlesnake ( Crotalus atrox ) is a medically important venomous snake in the Southwestern United States, injuring humans, and their companion animals. The goals of this investigation were to utilize a rabbit model of subcutaneous envenomation to assess Crotalus atrox venom coagulopathy and determine the efficacy of a ruthenium-containing antivenom (RA) in attenuating it.
METHODS: Sedated New Zealand White rabbits had viscoelastic measurements of whole blood coagulation kinetics obtained from ear artery samples. Crotalus atrox venom (4 mg/kg) was injected s

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is a crucial inflammatory signaling pathway that can serve as a potential treatment target for various disorders. A number of inhibitors have been developed for the TLR4 pathway, and although no inhibitors have been approved for clinical use, most have been screened against the TLR4-MD2 conformation. The venom gland is the organ of venomous snakes that secretes substances that are toxic to other animals. The level of gene transcription in venom glands is different from that in other tissues, includes a large number of biologically active ingredients, and is an impor
