Effects of mine tailings exposure on early life stages of atlantic cod.

In Norway, mine tailings waste can be deposited by coastal submarine dispersal. Mine tailings slurry includes fine particles <10 µm with elevated levels of metals (e.g., copper, iron) from residual mineral ore. Prolonged suspension of small particles in the water column may bring them into contact with locally spawned pelagic fish eggs, including Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua. Newly fertilized cod embryos were exposed to suspended mine tailings particles up to 3.2 mg/L in flow-through aquaria for a total of 21 d. Significantly more particles adhered to the surface of the chorion from the high tre

Effect of copper nanoparticles and ions on spermatozoa motility of sea trout (Salmo trutta m. Trutta L.).

Nanoproducts are being increasingly used in various industrial products, leading to a greater risk of water pollution through their discharge into environment as production byproducts. Increased levels of environmental pollution with nanoproducts pose a threat to all living organisms. Nanopollutants may have toxic effects on gametes and fertilization process in species with external fertilization, thereby reducing effectiveness of reproduction or greatly impairing it. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of copper nanoparticles (Cu and CuO) and copper ions (CuSO4·5H2O

Host-parasite interaction as a toxicity test endpoint using asymmetrical exposures.

Interspecific relationships frequently determine the effect a pollutant can have on an organism, and this is especially true in closely interacting species such as hosts and parasites. The high spatial and temporal variability of contaminant concentrations combined with the movement of aquatic biota can further influence the consequences that are associated with contamination. We used a full factorial design for the exposed and unexposed partners of the relationship between the parasitic larvae (glochidia) of the European freshwater mussel (Anodonta anatina) and its host fish (Squalius cephalu

Crumpling of silver nanowires by endolysosomes strongly reduces toxicity.

Fibrous particles interact with cells and organisms in complex ways that can lead to cellular dysfunction, cell death, inflammation, and disease. The development of conductive transparent networks (CTNs) composed of metallic silver nanowires (AgNWs) for flexible touchscreen displays raises new possibilities for the intimate contact between novel fibers and human skin. Here, we report that a material property, nanowire-bending stiffness that is a function of diameter, controls the cytotoxicity of AgNWs to nonimmune cells from humans, mice, and fish without deterioration of critical CTN performa

Ultrastructural changes in fin epithelium of Channa punctatus (Bloch) exposed to mercuric chloride: sem study.

Fish skin is in direct contact with water and forms the first line of defense against pathogens and toxicants present in the surrounding water. The effect of mercuric chloride (HgCl2) on surface architecture of the epidermis of caudal fin of an air breathing fish, Channa punctatus was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and revealed the presence of microridges that formed intricate, maze-like patterns. The exposed fish showed significant alterations including disorganization of microridge pattern and increase in number as well as enlargement of mucus cell openings. These findings ex

Prolonged mosquitocidal activity of Siparuna guianensis essential oil encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles.

BACKGROUND: The use of synthetic insecticides is one of the most common strategies for controlling disease vectors such as mosquitos. However, their overuse can result in serious risks to human health, to the environment, as well as to the selection of insecticidal resistant insect strains. The development of efficient and eco-friendly insect control is urgent, and essential oils have been presented as potential alternatives to synthetic insecticides. Moreover, nanoencapsulation techniques can enhance their efficiency by protecting from degradation and providing a controlled release rate. RES

A comparative study of nickel nanoparticle and ionic nickel toxicities in zebrafish: histopathological changes and oxidative stress.

Industry demand for nanomaterials is growing, but metal nanoparticle toxicity is not fully understood. For example, nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) are used in electric capacitors, and their consumption is increasing, but there have been few reports of their toxicity and environmental effects. To elucidate the toxicological characteristics of NiNPs, we investigated their effects on the histopathology and oxidative states of zebrafish (Danio rerio) and compared the results with those of ionic nickel. Zebrafish exposed to four different concentrations of NiNPs or NiCl2 for 72 hr or 7 days were subj

Effective extraction of fluorescent brightener 52 from foods by in situ formation of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent.

Fluorescent brightener 52 (FWA52) is a coumarin-based compound, and it is difficult to degrade owing to its high chemical stability. Up to now, several methods have been developed to extract and determine FWAs, but toxic, volatile and harmful organic solvents are often used. In this paper, a novel method for the extraction and analysis of FWA52 is proposed for the first time by in situ formation of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES) with parabens in aqueous solution. The effects of paraben structure, solution pH, system temperature, extractant dosage and initial FWA52 concentration on the

Efficacy assessment of peracetic acid in the removal of synthetic 17α-ethinyl estradiol contraceptive hormone in wastewater.

Increasing concerns have been raised on endocrine disrupting chemicals like the sex hormone 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), the more since traditional wastewater (WW) treatments appear to be ineffective for their removal. The efficacy of the relatively novel disinfectant peracetic acid (PAA) in EE2 removal was evaluated, as well as its potential effects on WW quality parameters. The treatments tested for EE2 removal were also evaluated in terms of toxicity, through the determination of biochemical responses (antioxidant enzymes, lipid peroxidation and vitellogenin induction) using zebrafish (Danio

A review of karenia mikimotoi: Bloom events, physiology, toxicity and toxic mechanism.

Karenia mikimotoi is a worldwide bloom-forming dinoflagellate in the genus Karenia. Blooms of this alga have been observed since the 1930s and have caused mass mortalities of fish, shellfish, and other invertebrates in the coastal waters of many countries, including Japan, Norway, Ireland, and New Zealand. This species has frequently bloomed in China, causing great financial losses (more than 2 billion yuan, Fujian Province, 2012). K. mikimotoi can adapt to various light, temperature, salinity, and nutrient conditions, which together with its complex life history, strong motility, and density-

Insights on the criteria of selection of vegetable and mineral dielectric fluids used in power transformers on the basis of their biodegradability and toxicity assessments.

Leakage of transformer dielectric fluids is a concern because it may pose a risk of environmental contamination. In this study, the deleterious effects of vegetable and mineral dielectric fluids in water bodies were investigated using biodegradability and acute toxicity tests with Danio rerio and Artemia salina. Regarding biodegradability, all four tested vegetable oils (soy, canola, sunflower and crambe) were considered as easily biodegradable, presenting degradation rates significantly higher than the Lubrax-type mineral fluid. Acute toxicity tests were performed in two separate experiments

Aquatic environmental risk assessment of chitosan/silver, copper and carbon nanotube nanocomposites as antimicrobial agents.

Despite the potential antimicrobial and water purification benefits of chitosan-based nanocomposites, there are growing concerns regarding the hazards of leached nanoparticles (NPs) to the in-contact circumference. The antibacterial performance of the nanocomposites of chitosan with silver and copper NPs and carbon nanotubes was assessed with an emphasis on their impact on fish health. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of each preparation and the growth curves of Aeromonas hydrophila exposed to different nanocomposites were measured. Five groups of Oreochromis niloticus were exposed to chi

Estradiol shapes mutualistic behaviour of female cleaner fish (Labroides dimidiatus - Valenciennes, 1839): Potential implications of environmental disturbance.

The presence of endocrine-derived compounds in the environment occurs due to a myriad of human or industrial activity and can disrupt the endocrine system of animals, including fish. One important group of endocrine disruptors are the estrogens, such as 17-β estradiol (E2, estradiol). Estrogens are gonadal steroid hormones, able to be influential even in small concentrations. Here, we demonstrate that E2 is linked to female' decisions made by an important coral reef species, the cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus, during interactions with other reef fishes (known as clients).
