Mapping a sustainable approach with whey-biosynthesized silver nanocomposites versus chemically synthesized silver nanoparticles in a chronic hippocampal toxicity rat model.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are increasingly utilized in food-contact materials and dairy processing systems. However, the chronic oral effects of these materials have not been sufficiently characterized. This study compared hippocampal responses to chemically synthesized AgNPs (8-11 nm) suspended in whey-based medium (WBM) at measured silver concentrations with those from biogenic silver nanocomposites (AgNCs; 13.3 ± 3.6 nm). These were administered orally to male Sprague-Dawley rats (120-150 g, n = 5 per group) for 90 days. AgNCs were biosynthesized by fermenting WBM with Lactobacillus acid

Embryonic lead (Pb) contact impairs lipid, oxidative, and behavioral markers in zebrafish across multiple generations.

The heavy metal lead (Pb) is widely accepted as a toxicant that impairs different physiological functions dependent on dose. The central nervous system (CNS) is highly sensitive to Pb especially when exposure occurs during early developmental periods. Moreover, even low Pb exposures during development can be detrimental and have long-lasting effects on the individual. Pb has also been implicated to exert changes across generations, impairing physiological traits as well as behavioral markers exerting an impairment in the health span. In this study, the developmental effect of environmental-rel

Global, regional, and national burden of tuberculosis and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis by HIV status, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading global cause of death from a single infectious agent. Recent reductions in global health funding have threatened TB control, making comprehensive assessment of TB, HIV-related TB, and drug-resistant TB burdens before these disruptions essential for shaping effective responses. The WHO End TB Strategy sets targets of a 95% reduction in TB deaths and a 90% reduction in TB incidence between 2015 and 2035. Using results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023, this study aims to assess the burden of TB and multidr

Toxicological effects of the environmental pollutant perfluoronanoic acid on the ground-dwelling arthropod Solenopsis invicta.

Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), widely employed in surfactants, coatings, plastics, corrosion inhibitors, and fire-extinguishing agents, is less regulated than PFOS or PFOA but displays higher bioaccumulation and potential toxicity. Most toxicity assessments have focused on mammals, fish, and algae, with limited research on ground-dwelling arthropods, especially ants. Here, we examined PFNA's toxic effects on red imported fire ants (RIFAs), a prevalent ground-dwelling species in South China. Stomach and contact toxicity experiments revealed that PFNA significantly reduced RIFA viability, with p

Chemical Screening and Nematicidal Activity of Essential Oils from Macaronesian and Mediterranean Plants for Controlling Plant-Parasitic Nematodes.

Plant-parasitic nematodes are highly damaging pests responsible for heavy losses in a considerable number of plant crops. Common pest management strategies rely on the use of synthetic chemical nematicides, which have led to serious concerns regarding their impact on human health and the environment. The essential oils (EOs) obtained from aromatic plant species can provide a good source of agents for the sustainable control of nematodes, due to higher biodegradability, generally low toxicity for mammals, fish, and birds, and lower bioaccumulation in the environment. This study aimed to evaluat

D-tetramethrin induces cardiac looping failure in zebrafish during embryonic development.

Cardiac looping is a crucial process during embryonic development. Abnormalities or failures in cardiac looping can lead to congenital heart defects, thereby affecting normal physiological function. Environmental pollutant exposure is one of the major causes of cardiac looping failure. D-tetramethrin is a hygienic insecticide widely used in households and public places, that can enter the human body through contact, insect transmission, and the food chain, thereby impacting human health. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to different concentrations of D-tetramethrin to analyze its

Does Personality Modulate the Sensitivity to Contaminants? A Case Study with Cadmium and Caffeine.

Personality has been reported to influence fish response to stress. This study aimed to assess whether shy and bold fish display different sensitivities to two environmental contaminants: caffeine (CAF) and cadmium (Cd). Thus, the sensitivity to Cd was compared based on lethal concentrations (LCs). The potential different response to CAF, known to alter the social behavior and locomotor activity of zebrafish, was studied using behavioral parameters. Overall, different LC values were found for each group: 48 h LC50 values of 4.79 (shy fish) and 8.20 mg·L-1 (bold fish); and 96 h LC50 values of 3

Avermectin induces photoreceptor functional impairment and color vision deficits in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The effects of avermectin on the visual function of nontarget organisms, particularly aquatic organisms, require further evaluation. Avermectin can come into direct contact with the eyes of nontarget organisms through air or water. However, few studies have investigated the safety of avermectin in the eyes of nontarget organisms. Therefore, it is important to assess its safety in the eyes of nontarget organisms. The results demonstrate that avermectin induces ocular morphological abnormalities, retinal structural damage, and decreased locomotor behavior in zebrafish larvae. Further analyses in

The role of the ferroptosis pathway in the toxic mechanism of TCDD-induced liver damage in zebrafish.

Dioxins, especially 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) are harmful environmental pollutants, which is known to accumulate in humans and animals through ingestion, drinking water, and direct contact, leading to severe liver steatosis and cell death. This study used zebrafish as an experimental model to explore whether TCDD affects the liver via the ferroptosis pathway. The study examined microscopic and ultrastructural characteristics, oxidative stress-related indicators, iron content, and related gene and protein expression in zebrafish larvae liver cells. The results showed that TCDD

Delivery of Hexaconazole by the Carboxymethylcellulose grafting and Cellulase/pH responsiveness hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles.

Conventional pesticides are easily lost, and poorly targeted deposition causes pollution and economic losses because of their large particle sizes. Cellulase/pH Responsiveness Hollow Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles (Hex/HMSN-CMC) was developed to respond rapidly to changes in the environment. The particle size of Hex/HMSN-CMC was 133.44 nm. The characterization results confirmed the introduction of CMC and a Hex loading capacity of 12 %. Controlled-release kinetics indicated that the drug-loaded system could exhibit specific responses to pH and cellulase, with the cumulative release rate excee

Protective Effects of Squid Gonad Phospholipids Against Hepatotoxicity Induced by Multi-Glycoside From Tripterygium wilfordii (GTW): Inhibition of Inflammatory Response and Boost of GTW Metabolism in Zebrafish.

Multi-glycoside from Tripterygium wilfordii Hook.f. (GTW) has shown clinical efficacy in suppressing immunological dysfunction, but is associated with severe hepatotoxicity. Phospholipids derived from marine organisms, particularly enriched in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, possess various beneficial bioactivities and significant medicinal value. However, the antagonistic action of phospholipids against GTW-induced hepatotoxicity remains unclear. In this study, we explored the protective effect of squid gonads-derived phospholipids (SPLs) against GTW-induced hepatotoxicity using a zeb

Developmental and neurobehavioral toxicity of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in zebrafish larvae.

Di-ethyl hexyl phthalate (DEHP), a plasticizer used in medical devices and cosmetics, easily leaches into the environment due to its weak chemical bonds with plastics. Humans and other organisms are exposed to DEHP through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact, inflicting toxic effects like neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity. However, there is a lack of information on its developmental toxicity, and its role in demyelination is also not well understood. We explored the adverse effects of DEHP during the early developmental stage of zebrafish larvae, focusing on its de
