With the advancement of analytical techniques and the global increase in plastic pollution, nanoplastics (NPs) have been increasingly detected across all ecosystems and in deep tissues, including the human brain. Notably, NPs are capable of acting as vectors for co-contaminants such as heavy metals, raising concerns about their combined toxicity. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to 250 nm polystyrene NPs (1000 µg/L), either alone or in combination with 10 µg/L of methylmercury (MeHg), during the first 30 days of development. INTRODUCTION: Cr(VI) is a heavy metal contaminant, can diffuse to ecosystems and harm aquatic animals. Gills, as a vital organ in direct contact with the aquatic environment, have become a key target tissue for assessing the toxicological effects of heavy metal pollution of water bodies due to their sensitivity to heavy metal exposure. However, 3the effects of Cr(VI) on the gill tissues in fish have been less studied. In this study, we revealed the multiple effects of chromium toxicity by assessing the oxidative damage, transcriptomic and metabolomic changes of Cr(VI) on gill tissues of Thymal

The spiraling whitefly, Aleurodicus dispersus Russell (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is a highly polyphagous and invasive pest that poses serious challenges to crop protection, particularly in tropical and subtropical agroecosystems. Given the rising concern over pesticide resistance and environmental risks associated with conventional insecticides, this study was conducted under controlled laboratory conditions to compare the efficacy of selected botanicals, fish oil rosin soap (FORS), organic salt, and synthetic insecticides against multiple life stages of A. dispersus. Standardized bioassays-incl

Zebrafish epidermis is an accessible tissue to evaluate the impact of drugs on epithelial integrity. Although ethylene glycol-bis(β-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA E3889, Sigma-Aldrich, CABA-Argentina), a calcium chelator, is widely used to disrupt epithelial monolayers in vitro, its application to zebrafish in vivo remains limited. We found that short-term exposure to EGTA induced tail damage ranging from minor and reversible to severe and lethal; at the tissue level, it caused disruption of cadherin-mediated cell-cell contacts and of the barrier function in the epidermis.

Single and mixture exposure to plant protection products (PPPs) can affect non-target organisms at sublethal concentrations, yet the ecological relevance of behavioural effects remains underexplored. Behavioural disruptions can compromise survival and fitness, with exposure occurring across terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Here, we assess the behavioural impact of environmentally relevant PPP concentrations on two ecologically and toxicologically important model species: honeybees (Apis mellifera) and zebrafish (Danio rerio). These organisms represent distinct exposure pathways: pollinator-

The increasing presence of synthetic dyes in aquatic environments presents a serious threat to ecosystems and human health. This study investigates the potential of natural biomaterials, specifically fish-derived components extracted from Cyprinus carpio (fish bladder and fish scales), for the simultaneous retention and degradation of a potentially toxic dye: Malachite Green (MG). The biomaterials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric ana

Phenazopyridine is an azo dye analgesic routinely used in the management of urinary tract infections. An overdose of this pharmaceutical agent causes methemoglobinemia and renal failure across all age groups. There is limited knowledge regarding the implications of early phenazopyridine exposure, whether via medicinal use or inadvertent contact, or its toxicity in specific organs in living organisms. Moreover, 40-50 % of this drug gets eliminated in its native form and hence it contributes to the pharmaceutical burden in the environment. In this study, we used zebrafish, a versatile model syst

Fluorene (FL), a low-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), is increasingly detected in freshwater environments, yet its mechanistic toxicity remains poorly characterized. This study evaluated FL-induced toxicity in Bellamya bengalensis (BB) and Anabas testudineus (AT) under acute (96hrs) and chronic exposures (28 and 45 days respectively). Acute assays revealed concentration-dependent mortality, with 96-h LC50 values of 3.074 mg/L for BB and 1.991 mg/L for AT, indicating higher fish sensitivity. Behavioral impairments-reduced crawling and mucus secretion in BB, and erratic sw

BACKGROUND: Conventional pesticide formulations often exhibit poor utilization efficiency, rapid photodegradation, and ecological persistence, which severely limit their field efficacy. Herein, we report a dual pH/light stimuli-responsive delivery system based on magnesium-doped zirconium-porphyrin metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the targeted control of rice sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani).
RESULTS: The trifluoroacetic acid-mediated synthesis yielded uniform PCN-222 nanoparticles (⁓140 nm), while subsequent Mg2+ doping and polydopamine-assisted prochloraz (Pro) encapsulation produced f

Gabapentin lactam (GBP-L), a transformation product of the anticonvulsant gabapentin, persists in surface waters at concentrations reaching μg/L levels due to its recalcitrance to conventional treatment processes. Despite growing concerns about pharmaceutical transformation products, their mechanistic toxicity pathways remain poorly characterized. Here, we used zebrafish embryo-larval models to investigate the neurodevelopmental effects of environmentally relevant GBP-L concentrations (8, 80, and 800 μg/L). Exposure to GBP-L had no significant effect on the survival rate of zebrafish embryos,

Microplastics (MPs), as ubiquitous pollutants in aquatic environments, constitute a significant component of water pollution, posing substantial ingestion risks to directly exposed fish. However, research on the potential toxic effects and underlying mechanisms of MPs on fish gills remains insufficient. Therefore, this study investigated the impacts of exposure to different concentrations of polystyrene MPs (100 and 400 μg/L) on the histological structure and gene expression in the gills of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus). Through integrated histopathological and transcriptomic analyses,

Sediments provide habitat and food for benthos, and phthalates (PAEs) have been detected in numerous river and marine sediments as a widely used plastic additive. PAEs in sediments is not only toxic to benthos, but also poses a threat to pelagic fish and human health through the food chain, so it is essential to comprehensively assess the contamination of sediments with PAEs. This paper presents a critical evaluation of PAEs in sediments, which is embodied in the analysis of the sources of PAEs in sediments from multiple perspectives. Biological production is indispensable, while artificial sy

Worldwide production of alkyl phenols and ethoxylated alkyl phenols is high due to their broad industrial uses. It has been widely documented that they are endocrine disruptors, and it has been suggested that they could exert neurotoxic effects. However, a lack of information about the neurotoxic effects of APs and APEs prevails. In this study, the bisphenol A (BPA), 4-nonylphenol (NP), and 3‑tert-butylphenol (tertBP) effects on brain and spinal cord of Nile tilapia exposed to environmental concentrations were evaluated by assessing acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), a

Sea turtle mortality is often related to materials that reach the coast from different anthropic activities worldwide. This study aimed to investigate whether sea turtle mortality was related to older marine problems, such as solid waste, or one of the largest oil spill accidents on the Brazilian coast, that occurred in 2019. We posed three questions: 1) Are there solid residues in the digestive tract samples, and which typology is the most abundant? 2) Can meso‑ and macro-waste marine pollutants cause mortality? 3) Is the dark material found really oil? A total of 25 gastrointestinal content

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) is mainly secreted by the hypothalamus to regulate stress when environmental factors change. Gills contact with water directly and may also secrete CRH to maintain local homeostasis. Ocean acidification changes water chemical parameters and is becoming an important environmental stressor for marine fish. The response of brain and gill CRH systems to ocean acidification remains unclear. In this study, marine medaka were exposed to CO2-acidified seawater (440 ppm, 1000 ppm, and 1800 ppm CO2) for 2 h, 4 h, 24 h, and 7 d, respectively. At 2 h and 4 h, the expr

Benthic freshwater cyanobacteria have the potential to produce toxins. Compared with more extensively studied plankton species, little is known about the impact of harmful benthic cyanobacteria on aquatic organisms. As demersal fish are usually in direct contact with benthic cyanobacteria, it is important to understand their interactive effects. This study investigated the physio-chemical responses of two demersal fish (Xenocypris davidi and Crucian carp) after exposure to benthic Oscillatoria (producing cylindrospermopsin, 2 × 106 cells/mL) for 7 days. Interestingly, benthic Oscillatoria had
