Fish skin mucosal surface becomes a barrier of antibiotic resistance genes under apramycin exposure.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are a kind of emerging environmental contamination, and are commonly found in antibiotic application situations, attracting wide attention. Fish skin mucosal surface (SMS), as the contact interface between fish and water, is the first line of defense against external pollutant invasion. Antibiotics are widely used in aquaculture, and SMS may be exposed to antibiotics. However, what happens to SMS when antibiotics are applied, and whether ARGs are enriched in SMS are not clear. In this study, Zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to antibiotic and antibiotic re

Effect of microplastics on sodium hypochlorite disinfection and changes in its toxicity on zebrafish.

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in water may affect the efficacy of the disinfection process and induce toxicity changes to MPs themselves during disinfection. Therefore, this study evaluated the two-way effects of polyethylene microplastic (MP) particles in water and wastewater during sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) disinfection. On the one hand, it has been confirmed that the presence of MPs reduced the disinfection efficiency of NaClO. The required CT (concentration of the disinfection × contact time) for a 2-4-log inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in different water samples was in

Safety evaluation of the food enzyme triacylglycerol lipase from the non-genetically modified Penicillium caseifulvum strain AE-LRF.

The food enzyme triacylglycerol lipase (triacylglycerol acylhydrolase; EC 3.1.1.3) is produced with the non-genetically modified Penicillium caseifulvum strain AE-LRF by Amano Enzyme Inc. The food enzyme was free from viable cells of the production organism. It is intended to be used in four food manufacturing processes. Dietary exposure to the food enzyme-total organic solids (TOS) was estimated to be up to 0.013 mg TOS/kg body weight (bw) per day in European populations. Genotoxicity tests did not indicate a safety concern. The systemic toxicity was assessed by means of a repeated dose 90-da

Regrettable Substitutes and the Brain: What Animal Models and Human Studies Tell Us about the Neurodevelopmental Effects of Bisphenol, Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, and Phthalate Replacements.

In recent decades, emerging evidence has identified endocrine and neurologic health concerns related to exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including bisphenol A (BPA), certain per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFASs), and phthalates. This has resulted in consumer pressure to remove these chemicals from the market, especially in food-contact materials and personal care products, driving their replacement with structurally or functionally similar substitutes. However, these "new-generation" chemicals may be just as or more harmful than their predecessors and some have not recei

Update of the scientific opinion on tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its derivatives in food.

The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2011 risk assessment on tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and five derivatives in food. Neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity were considered as the critical effects of TBBPA in rodent studies. The available evidence indicates that the carcinogenicity of TBBPA occurs via non-genotoxic mechanisms. Taking into account the new data, the CONTAM Panel considered it appropriate to set a tolerable daily intake (TDI). Based on decreased interest in social interaction in male mice, a lowest observed adverse effect level (LOAEL) of 0.2 mg/kg body weight (bw) per

Estrogenic, Genotoxic, and Antibacterial Effects of Chemicals from Cryogenically Milled Tire Tread.

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) contain complex mixtures of chemicals and release them to the environment, and potential toxic effects of these chemicals still need to be characterized. We used a standardized surrogate for TRWP, cryogenically milled tire tread (CMTT), to isolate and evaluate effects of tire-associated chemicals. We examined organic chemical mixtures extracted and leached from CMTT for the toxicity endpoints genotoxicity, estrogenicity, and inhibition of bacterial luminescence. The bioassays were performed after chromatographic separation on high-performance thin-layer chro

Pyridaben inhibits cell cycle progression and delays early embryonic development in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Pyridaben is a broad-spectrum, contact-killing acaricide that can be used to control a variety of harmful food and plant mites. Pyridaben displays cardiotoxicity and liver toxicity toward fish, but the effects on fish embryonic development have not been characterized. We exposed early zebrafish embryos to 20, 30, and 40 μg/L concentrations of pyridaben. The exposure caused developmental abnormalities, including delayed embryonic shield formation, yolk sac resorption, decreases in body length, reduced pigmentation, and delays in hatching. Pyridaben caused a significant increase in the transcrip

Novel collagen gradient membranes with multiphasic structures: Preparation, characterization, and biocompatibility.

Scaffolds with multiphasic structures are considered to be superior for guided tissue regeneration. Two types of tilapia skin collagen gradient membranes (stepped gradient and linear gradient) with multiphasic structures were prepared by controlling the collagen concentrations and the freezing rates. The results revealed that collagen gradient membranes were more capable of guiding tissue regeneration compared to homogeneous membranes. These two gradient membranes featured a dense outer layer and a loose inner layer, with good mechanical properties as indicated by tensile strengths of more tha

Rearing conditions (isolated versus group rearing) affect rotenone-induced changes in the behavior of zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos in the coiling assay.

Under regulations such as REACH, testing of novel and established compounds for their (neuro)toxic potential is a legal requirement in many countries. These are largely based on animal-, cost-, and time-intensive in vivo models, not in line with the 3 Rs' principle of animal experimentation. Thus, the development of alternative test methods has also received increasing attention in neurotoxicology. Such methods focus either on physiological alterations in brain development and neuronal pathways or on behavioral changes. An example of a behavioral developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) assay is the

Disrupted development in fathead minnow embryos exposed to wetland waters from the Athabasca Oil Sands Region, Alberta, Canada.

To assess aquatic toxicity of natural wetlands in the Athabasca oil sands region (AOSR) of northern Alberta, fifteen collected water samples were tested for their ability to affect survival and development of fathead minnow embryos. Wetland waters were also assessed for toxicants from natural oil sands bitumen deposits (Na, Cl, metals, naphthenic acids (NAs), naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and alkylated PAHs). Water samples from four wetlands caused toxicity to fish embryos. The most potent wetland water, HAT-S5, caused significantly decrea

Harmful impacts of microplastic pollution on poultry and biodegradation techniques using microorganisms for consumer health protection: A review.

Microplastics (MPs) are small plastic particles less than five millimeters in size. Microplastic pollution poses a serious threat to ecosystems, affecting both biotic and abiotic components. Current techniques used to eliminate microplastics include recycling, landfilling, incineration, and biodegradation. Microplastics have been detected in various animal species, including poultry, fish, mammals, and invertebrates, indicating widespread exposure and potential bioaccumulation. In the Middle East, MPs contamination was discovered in chicken purchased from food shops, chain supermarkets, and op

Exposure to amitriptyline disturbs behaviors in adult zebrafish and their offspring via altering neurotransmitter levels.

Amitriptyline (AMI), one of the widely used tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), has become a pharmaceutical contaminant frequently detected in aquatic ecosystems. However, the impacts of AMI exposure and underlying mechanisms on fish are still limited. In this study, adult zebrafish (F0) were exposed to AMI at 0 (control), 0.8, and 8 μg/L for 14 days. Subsequently, the exposed zebrafish were paired for spawning, and their offspring (F1) were reared in an AMI-free medium until 5 days post-fertilization (dpf). This study aimed to assess variations in behaviors and neurotransmitter levels in both t

The effects of diatom polyunsaturated aldehydes on embryonic and larval zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Marine diatoms are pervasive in many planktonic and benthic environments and represent an important food source for a wide range of species. Some diatoms produce polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) as defensive toxins. PUA exposure is known to reduce the fecundity of invertebrate grazers like copepods and echinoderm larvae, but little is known about the effects of PUAs on vertebrates. Many fish species are likely to come into close contact with diatoms. Many may deposit eggs on diatom-coated substrates, consume diatoms as larvae, and/or feed heavily on zooplankters that may be gut-loaded with dia

Transgenerational neurotoxic effects of triphenyltin on marine medaka: Impaired dopaminergic system function.

Triphenyltin (TPT), a widely used environmental contaminant in antifouling paints, is known for its neurotoxic effects. To investigate the multigenerational impacts of long-term exposure (6 weeks) to environmental concentrations of TPT (100 ng/L) on either parent, we performed mixed mating between control and exposed groups (males or females). Although there was no direct contact with TPT in the subsequent generations, both the first and second generations displayed behavioral abnormalities, including reduced activity and impaired cognitive function, with pronounced gender differences and anxi

Microplastics in aquatic systems: A comprehensive review of its distribution, environmental interactions, and health risks.

Microplastics (MPs) have become a critical pollutant, accumulating in aquatic ecosystems and posing significant environmental and human health risks. Approximately 5.25 trillion plastic particles float in global oceans, releasing up to 23,600 metric tonnes of dissolved organic carbon annually, which disrupts microbial dynamics. MPs arise from the breakdown of larger plastics, degraded by photodegradation, thermal degradation, and biological processes, which are influenced by polymer type and environmental factors. As carriers, MPs absorb and transport contaminants such as heavy metals, per- an

Biotransport and toxic effects of micro- and nanoplastics in fish model and their potential risk to humans: A review.

The growing body of scientific evidence suggests that micro- and nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems and human health. These particles can enter organisms through ingestion, inhalation, dermal contact, and trophic transfer. Exposure can directly affect multiple organs and systems (respiratory, digestive, neurological, reproductive, urinary, cardiovascular) and activate extensive intracellular signaling, inducing cytotoxicity involving mechanisms such as membrane disruption, extracellular polymer degradation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, DNA damag
