First report of homoanatoxin-a and associated dog neurotoxicosis in New Zealand.

In November 2005, at least five dogs died rapidly after contact with water from the Hutt River (lower North Island, New Zealand). Necropsy performed 24h later on one of the dogs (a 20-month-old Labrador) revealed few findings of interest, except for copious amounts of froth in the respiratory tract down to the bifurcation of the trachea and large quantities of algal material in the dog's stomach. Low and relatively stable flows in the Hutt River during spring had resulted in the proliferation of benthic cyanobacteria that formed large black/brown mats along the river edge. Samples from the Lab

Chronic oral exposure to bunker C fuel oil causes adrenal insufficiency in ranch mink (Mustela vison).

Animals living in the near-shore marine environment are predisposed to contact with chemical contaminants through land- and ocean-based activities. The release of petroleum hydrocarbons into the marine environment is a stressor to this environment and its resident wildlife. The stress response to chemical threats is dependent on an intact hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which also may be a target to the effects of these chemicals. Ranch mink (Mustela vison) were used as surrogates for sea otters (Enhydra lutris) to examine the development of adrenal hypertrophy after chronic, oral exposur

Primary irritant and delayed-contact hypersensitivity reactions to the freshwater cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii and its associated toxin cylindrospermopsin.

BACKGROUND: Freshwater cyanobacteria are common inhabitants of recreational waterbodies throughout the world; some cyanobacteria can dominate the phytoplankton and form blooms, many of which are toxic. Numerous reports in the literature describe pruritic skin rashes after recreational or occupational exposure to cyanobacteria, but there has been little research conducted on the cutaneous effects of cyanobacteria. Using the mouse ear swelling test (MEST), we sought to determine whether three toxin-producing cyanobacteria isolates and the purified cyanotoxin cylindrospermopsin produced delayed-c

Biochemical and physiological analyses of a hemolytic toxin isolated from a sea anemone Actineria villosa.

A species of venomous sea anemone Actineria villosa was recently found inhabiting the coastal areas of Okinawa, Japan. This marine animal produces various proteinous toxins, so that a local health organization was called for medical treatment for those who had accidental contact with this animal. In this study we analyzed the biochemical and physiological properties of hemolytic protein from A. villosa. The toxin purified from the tentacles of the animals was found to be a protein with a molecular weight of approximately 19 kDa. We named this newly found hemolytic toxin of A. villosa, Avt-I. I

Biological and health effects of exposure to kerosene-based jet fuels and performance additives.

Over 2 million military and civilian personnel per year (over 1 million in the United States) are occupationally exposed, respectively, to jet propulsion fuel-8 (JP-8), JP-8 +100 or JP-5, or to the civil aviation equivalents Jet A or Jet A-1. Approximately 60 billion gallon of these kerosene-based jet fuels are annually consumed worldwide (26 billion gallon in the United States), including over 5 billion gallon of JP-8 by the militaries of the United States and other NATO countries. JP-8, for example, represents the largest single chemical exposure in the U.S. military (2.53 billion gallon in

Human visual function in the North Carolina clinical study on possible estuary-associated syndrome.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency assisted the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services in conducting a study to investigate the potential for an association between fish kills in the North Carolina estuary system and the risk for persistent health effects. Impetus for the study was recent evidence suggesting that estuarine dinoflagellates, including members of the toxic Pfiesteria complex (TPC), P. piscicida and P. schumwayae, may release a toxin(s) that kills fish and adversely affects human health. This report describes one component of the study in which visual system

[Undesirable reactions from contact with marine organisms].

The contact of some marine organisms with the skin may prove to be traumatic and sometimes very dangerous. Some coelenterates, fishes, urchins, sea snakes, cephalopods, molluscs and other sea organisms are responsible for dermatological lesions, associated or not with toxic or allergic reactions exhibiting systemic effects.

Progressive maturation resistance to microcystin-LR cytotoxicity in two different hepatospheroidal models.

To develop three-dimensional (3D) cytotoxicity models further, microcystin-induced cytoskeletal disruption was tested in two different models of multicellular hepatocyte aggregate formation (hepatospheroids). Rat hepatocyte suspensions were seeded either onto poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate)-treated culture wells (poly-HEMA) or in a rotating wall vessel (RWV) device which provides minimal shear forces and enhances differentiated 3D growth. Ninety percent of spheroids forming on poly-HEMA tended to fuse and form nonhomogeneous multilobular structures by day 4 of incubation. In contrast, spheroi

The influence of petrochemicals and stress on the immune system of seabirds.

There is increasing attention directed to the role of environmental pollutants in altering immune function. Only with the identification of the responsible environmental toxicants, and an understanding of their mechanisms of action, can we hope to treat immunotoxic injuries. This situation is exemplified by the exposure of wild birds to oil spills, the subsequent potential for direct toxicity from the oil, and the secondary toxicity of stress-induced immune modulation. Immunosuppressive mechanisms related to oil ingestion and handling stress are implicated in the morbidity and mortality of sea
