RATIONALE: Central nervous system lymphoma typically arises in the deep cerebral regions, while occurrence in the Meckel cave at the skull base is exceedingly rare, with fewer than 1 hundred cases reported globally. Lesions in this area are often misdiagnosed as trigeminal schwannomas or meningiomas. This report aims to enhance clinical recognition of this rare entity by presenting a meticulously analyzed case that was initially misdiagnosed as a trigeminal schwannoma due to overlapping radiological features. Through detailed clinicopathological correlation, we seek to identify key diagnostic

Background Granulomatous skin lesions pose a diagnostic challenge due to overlapping clinical and histopathological features. Objectives To describe the clinical and histopathological features of facial granulomatous lesions and their clinical mimics, and evaluate the utility of clinico-pathological correlation in making the final diagnosis. Methods This was a cross-sectional study including 77 patients with clinically suspected granulomatous skin lesions on the face. Diagnosis was based on clinico-pathological features, and where required, ancillary investigations and/or therapeutic trial. Cl

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by non-caseating granulomatous inflammation involving the oral and maxillofacial region. Its heterogeneous clinical presentation and overlap with systemic granulomatous diseases often make diagnosis challenging. We report the case of a 54-year-old woman presenting with a four-month history of progressive mandibular mucosal hypertrophy mimicking an epulis-like lesion. Clinical examination revealed multiple pedunculated, firm, painless mucosal lesions localized to the anterior mandibular ridge in a fully edentul

BACKGROUND: Primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the lip is a rare subtype of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma that presents a diagnostic challenge due to its infrequent location and nonspecific clinical symptoms. The early suspicion of this diagnosis is often delayed because of its overlap with benign inflammation/infection, such as abscesses and mucoceles.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a 65-year-old male with worsening swelling of the upper lip that was initially diagnosed as a maxillary space infection. Imaging studies, including ultrasound and MRI, showed a poorly de

INTRODUCTION: En coup de sabre (ECDS) and Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) are rare, localised scleroderma subtypes, often considered to be overlapping variants of morphea. Hemimasticatory spasm (HMS), a distinct rare neuromuscular disorder characterised by unilateral paroxysmal contraction of the jaw muscles, has rarely been reported in association with these conditions.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old man presented with a linear, cicatricial alopecic patch over the left parietal scalp, along with indurated and bound-down skin over the left cheek. This was followed by progressive depression and

BACKGROUND: The application of non-invasive brain stimulation in the rehabilitation of bilingual individuals with aphasia following a stroke is understudied. Recent studies show benefits of anodal cerebellar transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in bilinguals, while in monolinguals, repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) targeting the motor cortex of the lips seems to be effective in aphasia recovery.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the effects of inhibitory continuous theta burst rTMS stimulation targeting the right motor cortex of the lips during picture naming task in the

Plasma cell gingivitis (PCG) is an uncommon plasma-cell-rich inflammatory disorder of the gingiva that may clinically resemble plaque-associated enlargement, granulomatous disease, hematologic disease, or plasma-cell neoplasia. Its association with cheilitis is rare, and diagnosis requires clinicopathologic correlation. An 18-year-old female presented with a 1-year history of progressive gingival enlargement and upper-lip swelling. Intraoral examination showed generalized erythematous marginal and papillary gingival enlargement with loss of stippling, bleeding on probing, pseudopocketing, and

Background/Objectives: Canalicular adenoma (CaA) is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm that primarily arises in minor salivary glands. Due to histological overlaps with other benign and malignant tumors, accurate diagnosis remains a challenge. This systematic review aims to comprehensively evaluate the clinical presentation, histopathological features, immunohistochemical (IHC) profiles, treatment modalities, and outcomes of CaA affecting the minor salivary glands. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar was conducted for case reports and case serie

OBJECTIVE: 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11 beta HSD1) converts inactive cortisone to active cortisol. 11 beta HSD1 activity is increased in GH deficiency and inhibited by GH and IGF-I in acromegaly. However it is not known whether these changes in cortisol metabolism exert significant effects during hydrocortisone therapy, and the effect has not been studied in patients taking cortisone acetate. We have studied the effect of GH induced 11 beta HSD1 inhibition in hypopituitary adults with severe GH deficiency to determine whether this inhibition has a different magnitude of effe

Background: Peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the oral cavity are rare and encompass both benign and malignant entities. Differentiating between these lesions remains challenging due to overlapping clinical and histopathological characteristics. Case presentation: We present two cases illustrating the biological spectrum of peripheral nerve sheath tumors in the oral cavity. The first case involves a 76-year-old male with a recurrent lower lip lesion initially diagnosed as benign, which progressed to a high-grade malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). The second case describes a 20-ye

OBJECTIVE: Positive signs are clinical signs that are not explained by a structural neurological lesion and are considered the hallmark of functional neurological disorder (FND). In the literature and in clinical experience, positive signs are observed among patients without FND. The aim of the study was to examine the significance of positive signs among headache patients.
METHODS: The authors of this prospective study recruited patients in headache consultation at the University Hospital Inselspital, Bern, Switzerland. Inclusion criteria were headache or facial pain in the past 3 months and

INTRODUCTION: Nasal glial heterotopias, or nasal gliomas, are rare congenital midline lesions composed of ectopic, non-neoplastic glial tissue. They are often mistaken for encephaloceles due to overlapping clinical and embryologic features. Accurate diagnosis is essential to avoid complications associated with surgical intervention.
METHODS: The authors present the case of a newborn female infant born at 35 weeks and 6 days of gestation with a midline nasal mass, respiratory distress, and multiple dysmorphic features. Prenatal and postnatal imaging revealed a pedunculated nasal lesion without

BACKGROUND: Cellular cervical adenomyoma (CCA) is a rare benign tumor composed of proliferative smooth muscle cells and benign endocervical-type glands. Due to its nonspecific clinical and imaging features, CCA can mimic cervical malignancies, posing a diagnostic challenge.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old woman presented with irregular vaginal bleeding. Pelvic examination revealed an approximately 3 cm friable mass on the posterior cervical lip. Transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) showed a well-circumscribed, heterogeneous lesion with mild peripheral vascularity, favoring a cervical leiomyoma. In

Oral lesions with similar clinical presentation often conceal distinct histopathological profiles, creating diagnostic challenges and potential risks of misdiagnosis. This report presents the cases of three patients whose oral lesions appeared macroscopically alike but revealed markedly different microscopic characteristics. The first case involved a 20-year-old man with a persistent lower lip lesion that had recurred after two prior interventions; histopathological analysis confirmed a mucocele characterized by mucin extravasation and chronic inflammatory infiltrate. The second case was of a

Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) is a leishmania infection; that usually affects the oral and nasal mucosa. The coexistence of leishmania and malignancy is rarely reported and mainly in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of an overlapping between leishmania and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in a 60-year-old immunocompetent Syrian female. The patient presented with a one-year crusty nodule on the lower lip. Since she lives in an endemic region, leishmaniasis was suggested, and confirmed with a Giemsa-stained smear. After 20 days of meglumine antimoniate treatment, the patient reveale

BACKGROUND: Amyloidosis is characterized by extracellular amyloid protein deposition. When amyloidosis intersects with basal cell carcinoma (BCC), it introduces complex diagnostic challenges. This study explored the overlap between primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis (PLCA) and BCC, examining amyloid deposits in BCC, systemic amyloidosis risk in PLCA, and various treatment methods.
METHODS: Two case studies were discussed, followed by a literature review, in which PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library databases were utilized. The search, covering studies from infinity u

The diagnostic process and discrimination of mucosal lesions present a formidable challenge for numerous clinicians, primarily attributable to the common overlap of clinical manifestations observed across various categories, including infectious, autoimmune, connective tissue, and systemic vascular inflammatory diseases. In cases of mucosal lesions, syphilis presents distinctive characteristics that can help clinicians differentiate it from other conditions. The most common manifestation of primary syphilis is mostly a painless, firm, indurated ulcer known as a chancre, which typically appears

A new bisexual species of Rotylenchus is described and illustrated based on morphological, morphometric and molecular characterizations. Rotylenchus zhongshanensis sp. nov. is characterized by having a conoid lip region complying with the basic pattern for Hoplolaimidae, but with pharyngeal glands slightly overlapping intestine dorsally and cuticle thickened abnormally in female tail terminus. Females have robust stylet (30.1-33.8 μm). The pharyngeal gland has short dorsal (11.2-16.8 μm) overlap on the intestine. The vulva is located at 48.0-56.5% of body length, and phasmids are pore-like, 4-

Mucosal melanoma, or so-called mucosal-oral melanoma is a rare but serious diagnostic and therapeutic problem. The "primary mixed" mucocutaneous forms of melanoma, which affect both the mucosa and the adjacent skin, are also particularly problematic and rare. Given that the staging, diagnosis, and treatment of mucosal (oral) melanoma differs from that of cutaneous melanoma, staging in mixed melanoma (primary mucocutaneous melanoma) as well as decisions for each subsequent diagnostic and therapeutic step should be individualized and modified according to the recommendations of the respective tw

We investigated the role of amino acid metabolism (AAM) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) tissues to explore its prognostic value and potential therapeutic strategies. A risk score based on four AAM-related genes (AMG) was constructed that could predict the prognosis of HNSCC. These four genes were up-regulated in HNSCC tissues and might act as oncogenes. Internal validation in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) by bootstrapping showed that patients with high-risk scores had a poorer prognosis than patients with low-risk scores, and this was confirmed in the Gene Expression Omnibus
