Development and internal validation of the NOTICE assessment as a non-biological measure of prenatal nicotine, tobacco, and cannabis use and exposure.

OBJECTIVES: Accurate measurement of tobacco, nicotine and cannabis use and exposure during pregnancy is essential for research and clinical care, yet existing perinatal surveillance relies on simplified self-report that inadequately captures exposure patterns. Biological assays provide objective measurement but are invasive, costly, limited to short detection windows, and impractical for repeated or population-level use. This study aimed to develop and internally validate the Nicotine, Tobacco and Cannabis Use and Exposure (NOTICE) assessment as a low-burden, non-biological behavioural tool fo

Future Treatments for Tobacco Dependence.

Scientific evidence supports that the combination of psychological counseling and pharmacological treatment is the most effective healthcare intervention to help smokers quit. Four types of medications have been shown to be safe and effective: nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), bupropion, varenicline, and cytisinicline. Nevertheless, based on the results of new studies, we can point out several opportunities for development clinical research in this field: (a) finding the most effective doses for cytisinicline, (b) finding the effectiveness and safety of cytisinicline in smokers with chronic

Heated Tobacco Product Awareness and Use Among Young Adult Texas College Students During a Period of Renewed Market Activity, 2025-2026.

Little is known about heated tobacco product (HTP; e.g., IQOS) use among young adults following IQOS reentry to the US market, initially centered in Austin, Texas. We examined HTP awareness and use among Texas college students during renewed market activity. Repeated cross-sectional surveys included 17,750 participants (18-29y) attending 19 Texas colleges in 2025 and 2026. Mixed-effects logistic regression models examined changes in HTP awareness and use by survey year, campus location (Austin vs. non-Austin), and demographic, tobacco use, and cessation correlates. Overall, 14.8% reported HTP

Secondhand smoke exposure and current tobacco and/or nicotine use among adolescents in Kenya and Nigeria: a survey-weighted inverse probability weighting analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is associated with adolescent tobacco and nicotine use but nationally representative evidence from sub-Saharan Africa is limited. We examined this association among adolescents in Kenya and Nigeria using survey-weighted inverse probability weighting. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data from the 2024 Data on Youth Tobacco in Africa household survey of adolescents aged 10-17 years in Kenya (n=6435) and Nigeria (n=7502). SHS exposure was self-reported. Current use of any tobacco and/or nicotine product was self-reported past-30-day use of cigar

Urban-Rural and Demographic Differences in Substance Use Among High School Students - Youth Risk Behavior Survey, United States, 2025.

Adolescent substance use remains a critical public health concern. Understanding patterns of substance use might guide prevention strategies and identify populations in need of focused, tailored interventions. This report links nationally representative 2025 Youth Risk Behavior Survey data with school characteristics data to describe substance use behaviors and differences by demographic characteristics and among students in public schools for whom locale information was available, by urban-rural classification. Current (i.e., past 30-day) measures included prescription opioid misuse and use o

Post-policy evaluation lags of tobacco and nicotine product policies: a systematic review from the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review examines the time interval between policy implementation and evaluation of behavioral results in tobacco control studies (evaluation lag) as well as reported estimates. Results can help policymakers avoid premature conclusions and make more informed decisions about policy effectiveness. METHODS: We reviewed studies from 2010 onward evaluating the effects of policies implemented at national-level or across majority provinces on behavioral outcomes, including tobacco use, cessation attempts, and secondhand smoke exposure, in the United States, Canada, Australia

Abolition by design: implementing the dismantling of the commercial tobacco and nicotine industry.

The commercial tobacco and nicotine industry continues to drive preventable disease and death globally. Despite progress in tobacco control, industry power, product diversification, market expansion, and policy interference have constrained the impact of incremental regulatory approaches. Downstream interventions, such as cessation supports and lung cancer screening, remain essential but respond to accumulated harms rather than preventing exposure at its source. This paper presents an implementation framework that positions abolition as a staged, governable, and legally supported public health

Sports, Gigs, and TikToks: Multichannel Advertising of Oral Nicotine Pouches.

This commentary highlights the aggressive advertising strategies being used to market oral nicotine pouches, including through online media, motorsport sponsorships, and out-of-home adverts. We underscore the need for balanced policy measures that maintain access to reduced harm alternatives for existing tobacco and nicotine users while minimizing exposure to youth and nonusers.

Coolants, organic acids, flavourings and other additives that facilitate inhalation of tobacco and nicotine products: implications for regulation.

To inform regulatory policy, this article summarises findings on inhalation facilitation from the ninth report of the WHO Study Group on Tobacco Product Regulation. Some additives counteract the harshness and bitterness of tobacco and nicotine product aerosols, making them easier to inhale. Additives that promote inhalability may perpetuate and increase the use of inhaled tobacco and nicotine products, especially by young people. Thus, as a class, additives that facilitate inhalation are an important regulatory target to prevent tobacco and nicotine product uptake. We defined inhalation facili

Impact of the intensified follow-up procedure of patients lost to 6-month follow-up after an intensive smoking and nicotine cessation intervention in practice: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Post-intervention follow-up is challenging in research and practice. In tobacco reports, patients with missing follow-up were considered smokers. Based on patient and staff preferences, an add-on intensified follow-up procedure after intensive tobacco and nicotine cessation interventions was developed. This study examined the impact of the new procedure on patients lost to follow-up and compared their cessation status with that of those who completed routine follow-up. METHODS: Between January and February 2023, 2114 patients participated in the Danish STOPbase for Tobacco and Nic

Marketing strategies in business-to-business advertisements for oral nicotine products.

INTRODUCTION: Although the popularity of oral nicotine products (ONPs) such as ZYN and On! is growing globally, there is limited research on their marketing and advertising. This report describes recent ONP marketing communication to retailers. Promotion to retailers can provide insight into new product flavours and styles, as well as future marketing strategies targeting consumers. METHODS: We obtained all unique ONP print and online advertisements (ads) (N=50) targeted towards US businesses between January 2016 and August 2022 from Vivvix (formerly Numerator Ad Intel). Describing ZYN-Related Content on TikTok: Content Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Nicotine pouches are the fastest-growing oral smokeless tobacco or nicotine product category in the United States, and there are concerns about their potential appeal to youth. Few studies have surveilled discussions about nicotine pouches on TikTok, an audiovisual platform popular among youth. To address this gap, this study conducted a content analysis of TikTok posts related to the leading nicotine pouch brand, ZYN. AIMS AND METHODS: Publicly available posts (N = 665) from 10 ZYN-related hashtags were collected from the TikTok Application Programming Interface (API) between J

The UK Tobacco and Vapes Bill (2023/4): framing strategies used by tobacco and nicotine industry actors faced with an endgame policy (a generational sales ban of tobacco products) and nicotine product restrictions.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, the UK government proposed a Bill introducing a generational ban on the sale of tobacco products and measures targeting youth nicotine product (NP) use. Industries' responses remain unexplored. METHODS: We analysed 43 consultation and evidence submissions from tobacco and nicotine industry-linked actors, assessing their connections to transnational tobacco companies (TTCs) and using an evidence-based taxonomy to examine framing strategies. RESULTS: TTCs and actors with known current TTC links accounted for 42% of submissions. Other actors-some with historic TTC ties-were

Urinary Tobacco and Nicotine Exposure Biomarkers as Predictors of Transitions between Cigarette and e-Cigarette Use in the Exhale Longitudinal Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary tobacco and nicotine exposure biomarkers may be predictive of subsequent transitions in product use. METHODS: We used data from an observational study of 371 adults who smoked cigarettes daily, some of whom also used e-cigarettes, and who were followed every 2 months for up to 2 years (Wisconsin, United States, 2015-2019). Using a multistate transition model, we assessed continuous associations between transition propensities and urinary tobacco biomarker concentrations, namely 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol) (NNAL) and NE-2 (cotinine + trans-3'-hydroxycot

Differences in AUTOS- and FTND-assessed dependence on various tobacco products among Chinese current tobacco/nicotine users.

Combustible cigarettes remain the dominant tobacco product in China, although use of emerging tobacco/nicotine products such as electronic cigarettes (ECs), heated tobacco products (HTPs), smokeless tobacco and nicotine pouches (NPs) is increasing. However, their addictive potential is not well understood. We conducted an online survey (June-September 2025) among 5,901 adult tobacco/nicotine users in China, assessing dependence using the Autonomy Over Tobacco Scale (AUTOS) and the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). General linear regression indicated that EC-only users had the low
