Regulatory, excise tax, and institutional governance of electronic nicotine delivery systems in low- and middle-income countries: A comparative policy analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use remains a major global cause of preventable mortality, with a disproportionate burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have entered these markets rapidly, but governance frameworks remain fragmented, unstable, and poorly compared across LMIC settings. This study examined variation in the regulatory, excise tax, and institutional governance of ENDS across eleven LMICs and identified the structural patterns underlying that variation. METHODS: We conducted a structured comparative policy analysis of Bangladesh, Brazi

Product acceptance and cigarette reduction: Results from a Velo® pouch actual use study among United States adults who smoke.

OBJECTIVE: Approximately 28.8 million United States adults currently smoke cigarettes. Tobacco Harm Reduction aims to migrate adults who smoke (AWS), and would otherwise continue smoking, to alternative nicotine products. This study evaluated the impact of Velo® products on cigarette consumption over a 6-week actual use period (AUP). METHODS: In total, 1105 AWS were enrolled from ten United States-based study sites in, 2022 and provided access to 12 Velo® products (selecting up to five at a time) for ad libitum use. Participants' daily tobacco and nicotine product use, including Velo®, was se

The PATHS survey: a participatory-informed, multilingual instrument for assessing tobacco and nicotine-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours among people with a migration background in Switzerland.

INTRODUCTION: Research on tobacco and nicotine use among people with migration backgrounds is characterised by methodological limitations, including a predominant focus on behavioural outcomes, limited integration of knowledge and attitudes, and a lack of participatory approaches. Standard population surveys further restrict linguistic accessibility and often fail to capture the complexity of migration-related experiences, thereby limiting the interpretability of observed health inequalities. We thus aimed to develop a multilingual, participatory survey instrument assessing knowledge, attitude

Longitudinal analysis of geographical inequalities in retail density of tobacco and nicotine vapour products in Scotland, 2020-2024.

OBJECTIVE: Legislative efforts have aimed to reduce the visibility and accessibility of tobacco to limit use and prevent uptake, but less attention has been paid to emerging new nicotine products (NNPs). This study examines changes in the density and socio-spatial distribution of tobacco and nicotine vapour products (NVPs, the primary type of NNPs) in Scotland between 2020 and 24. METHODS: National register data from 2020 to 2024 were used to examine changes in the count and density of outlets selling tobacco and/or NVPs across Scotland. Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) was utilised to assess

Alternative tobacco and nicotine products during anticancer therapy: a systematic review of mechanistic toxicology evidence, treatment-resistance signals, and potential hazards.

The aim of this review is to determine the effect of alternative tobacco/nicotine products on response to chemotherapy, including mechanistic toxicology evidence, treatment-resistance signals and potential hazard. The literature was searched in PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases in June 2026. Currently, there has been no epidemiological study investigating effects of alternative products on chemotherapy response. There are some evidence that snus using increases risk of cancer-related death and reduces survival rate. However, for e-cigarettes the weight of such evidence is lower. Furt

The effects of HIV-1 regulatory Tat expression on nicotine dependence in mice.

HIV-1 affects nearly 40 million people worldwide, with people living with HIV disproportionately impacted by tobacco and nicotine use. Despite the high smoking prevalence in this population, the mechanisms underlying nicotine dependence in this context remain poorly understood. Using an HIV-1 Tat transgenic mouse model, we investigated the effects of Tat expression on nicotine intake, preference, and withdrawal-related behaviors. Male and female Tat(+)/Tat(-) mice received chronic nicotine or saline via osmotic minipumps for 14 days and spontaneous withdrawal was evaluated. Withdrawal signs of

Key challenges for in vitro testing of tobacco and next generation products for regulatory applications: Recommendations for the Ames test.

The Ames bacterial mutagenesis assay (Ames test) has been used for more than 50 years, to help assess the safety of a variety of single chemicals and complex mixtures in the form of solids, liquids or aerosols. Because of the diverse range of substances that need to be tested, many modifications of this test, as well as modifications of the methods by which the test substances are prepared and applied to the bacterial test system, have been developed. Currently, there is a need for mutagenicity testing of both traditional tobacco products and next generation products (NGPs) such as e-cigarette

Global analysis of regulatory definitions of tobacco and nicotine-containing products.

INTRODUCTION: The proliferation of nicotine-containing products challenges global tobacco control progress. National regulations often rely on product definitions to enforce restrictions or prohibitions. Incomplete legal definitions can leave certain products unregulated, undermining public health efforts. We analysed how countries define tobacco and nicotine-containing products in national laws to map current regulatory coverage. METHODS: We reviewed tobacco control-related national laws of the 189 Signatories and Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), assessing t

Vaping: Respiratory Impacts and Public Health Challenges in the Americas.

The use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), also known as electronic-cigarette (e-cig) or vaping, is a public health threat throughout the Americas. Teenagers and young adults have the highest rates of use of these tobacco products. However, vaping has a gateway effect, which has led to dual use of both combustible tobacco and nicotine vaping products, which is concerning given that greater adverse health effects of e-cigarettes are seen in the context of co-use with combustible tobacco. Multiple policy approaches have been used across North and South America, with varying success.

An Assessment of the Provision of Vaping Products by UK Stop Smoking Services Using Data From Freedom of Information Requests.

Introduction Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disease and arises due to prolonged and repeated inhalational exposure to chemical toxicants found in cigarette smoke. Within this context, vaping products, also termed e‑cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems, have been positioned by public health bodies as being substantially less harmful than combustible cigarettes. Furthermore, evidence also suggests that vaping products may be more effective in supporting smoking cessation than traditional support such as nicotine replacement therapy. The UK National

Nicotine-Mediated Redox and Nitrosative Stress in Cardiorenal Health.

Nicotine exposure is increasingly widespread due to the expansion of the use of noncombustible tobacco and nicotine-replacement products; yet nicotine is still being framed as an addictive but relatively benign compound. This review synthesizes clinical and experimental evidence linking nicotine exposure to cardiorenal disease, emphasizing that risks persist after cessation. We discuss here a central novel concept that damage caused by nicotine in tissues is not determined solely by receptor signaling, as nicotine exists in chemical forms capable of strong receptor-independent membrane diffusi

Infrastructure of tobacco and nicotine cessation services in Finnish healthcare: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Many countries have made significant progress in implementing effective tobacco control policies. Despite the availability of clinical treatment guidelines for smoking cessation, their integration into routine healthcare systems is less well-known. In Finland, recommendations addressing the infrastructure of tobacco and nicotine cessation, aimed at healthcare service providers, were published in 2024. This study aims to provide a baseline assessment for their evaluation. METHODS: This cross-sectional study collected data in autumn 2024 from twenty-one wellbeing service counties

European Code Against Cancer, 5th edition - tobacco and nicotine containing products, second-hand smoke, alcohol and cancer.

Tobacco use, second-hand tobacco smoke (SHS) exposure and alcohol consumption are well-established carcinogens and major public health concerns. In the European Union (EU), tobacco and alcohol use are the leading preventable causes of cancer and four other major noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), significantly contributing to NCD-related morbidity and mortality. Despite declining prevalence, consumption of these substances is still high in the region, especially among the most deprived. There is strong evidence that quitting smoking, minimising exposure to SHS and eliminating or reducing alcohol

A Narrative Review of the Potential Impact of Next-Generation Tobacco and Nicotine Products on Cardiovascular Health.

Cigarette smoking is a cause of serious disease in smokers, including cardiovascular disease (CVD). The processes underpinning the development of CVD are well understood. These involve many cell types and cellular processes contributing to the development of atherosclerotic plaques in blood vessels, leading to impaired tissue oxygen supply and acute manifestations such as myocardial infarction and stroke. Cigarette smoke contains thousands of chemicals, some of which can be harmful to the cardiovascular system and may promote atherogenesis. In this narrative review, we assess the growing body

Global burden and trends of tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer in adolescents and young adults: a secondary analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Tracheal, bronchus, and lung (TBL) cancer is a major global cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality. Adolescents and young adults (AYAs, ages 15-39 years) represent a distinctive demographic with unique epidemiological characteristics-including sex-specific trends, differing risk factor profiles, and distinct biological features-yet they are often overlooked in global cancer assessments. Understanding the TBL cancer burden in this age group is critical as they may serve as a sentinel population for emerging risk exposures including changing smoking patterns, e-cigarette use

A Joint Survival Modeling and Therapy Knowledge Graph Framework to Characterize Opioid Use Disorder Trajectories.

MOTIVATION: Opioid use disorder (OUD) often emerges following prescription opioid exposure and follows a dynamic clinical course characterized by onset, remission, and relapse. Large-scale cohorts linking electronic health records (EHR) with rich longitudinal survey data, such as the All of Us Research Program, enable computational modeling of stage-specific risk and provide an opportunity to connect predictive factors with potential treatment options. RESULTS: We developed a multi-stage computational framework to model transitions across OUD onset, treatment-related remission, and relapse, a
