A retrospective study was undertaken in 1990 of 188 patients with the diagnosis of non small cell carcinoma of the lung referred to the Department of Radiation Oncology in 1984. Most patients (178/188) received a course of radiotherapy. This was definitive in 23, palliative in 148 (primary site in 113, metastases in 16, primary plus metastases in 19) and postoperative in 7. This report describes an exploratory population-based study of maternal and perinatal risk factors for childhood leukemia in Sweden. The Swedish National Cancer Registry ascertained 411 cases in successive birth cohorts from 1973 through 1984 recorded in the Swedish Medical Birth Registry. Small bowel obstruction (SBO) as a late complication of the treatment of Hodgkin's disease was found in 32 of 398 (8%) patients followed over a 20 year period. Our calculation provides the first population-based incidence rate of childhood mesothelioma in the United States. Based on these data and on our pathology review, we conclude that mesothelioma occurs rarely in children and that this diagnosis is difficult to establish. Retrospective and prospective epidemiologic studies are being conducted as part of a national survey of plutonium workers at four Department of Energy facilities (Los Alamos, NM; Rocky Flats, CO; Mound Laboratory, OH; and Savannah River, SC).
