Molecular interactions between capsicum protein and capsanthin: enhancement of complex formation and physicochemical stability by ultrasound and microwave treatments.

To investigate the mechanisms by which ultrasound (US), microwave (MW), and ultrasound-microwave combined (UM) treatments enhance the stability of capsanthin (Cap) in chili products, this study examined the effects of US, MW, and UM on Cap stability within the capsicum protein (CP)-Cap complex system. The characteristics and molecular structure of the complex (CCAP) were also analyzed. Results indicated that all treatments improved CP-Cap binding rate and CCAP stability, enhancing the resistance of Cap to light, heat, and acid-base stress, with MW showing the strongest effect. MW induced globa

Structural Stability and Thermoelectric Properties of CoSbS under High Pressure.

The structural stability of CoSbS under extremely high-pressure conditions was investigated by using in situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction. Remarkably, CoSbS demonstrates exceptional structural stability even at ∼60 GPa. Building upon these stable structural characteristics, we employed first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory to analyze the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of CoSbS under high pressure. The study reveals that pressure significantly modifies the electronic structure of CoSbS, leading to a progressive reduction in the band gap, pronounced

Enhancing photothermal therapy effectiveness via tartrazine-induced optical clearing of biological tissues.

Photothermal therapies offer a powerful strategy for noninvasive treatment of cancer and other pathological conditions by converting light energy into localized heat to ablate diseased tissues or induce local release of antigens. However, the efficacy and precision of these therapies are severely restricted by optical scattering in biological tissues, which limits light penetration and spatial accuracy in vivo. In this work, we leverage the food coloring dye tartrazine-a strongly absorbing molecule in UV-VIS range ([Formula: see text]250 nm and [Formula: see text]430 nm) and with minimal absor

Proteomic profiling of a Sporobolomyces yeast reveals global responses to UV-B-induced oxidative stress.

RESEARCH BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation induces oxidative stress through the generation of reactive oxygen species, affecting organisms across all domains of life. While UV-stress responses have been extensively studied in the ascomycete yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and animal systems, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying UV tolerance in basidiomycete, UV-resistant yeasts. Carotenoid-producing yeasts of the genus Sporobolomyces represent an attractive model to investigate whether conserved oxidative stress pathways, including bZip transcription factor signall

Photon Management in Photochemical Synthesis and Reactor Scale-Up.

ConspectusPhotochemical methods have become indispensable in modern organic synthesis by enabling unique reactivities under mild conditions through electron transfer, energy transfer, and other radical-based pathways. In contrast to thermally driven reactions, however, photochemical processes are fundamentally governed by the delivery and utilization of photons. Wavelength, light intensity, photon flux, optical path length, and reactor geometry collectively determine how efficiently photons are absorbed and translated into chemical reactivity. Importantly, increasing light intensity does not n

Effects of Arginine on Hierarchical Protein Aggregation.

Arginine is widely used in protein formulations to suppress protein aggregation and prolong the lifetime of the native, functional state which undergoes different stresses during storage, shipping and handling. However, arginine's differential effects on protein aggregation pathways remain unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of arginine on heat- and acid-induced aggregation of immunoglobulin G and heat-induced aggregation of several model proteins. Arginine suppressed the formation of insoluble aggregates but had limited impact on monomer recovery, particularly on immunoglobulin G. Inst

Effects of UVC-modified gallic acid (UVC-GA) on the quality and cytotoxicity of squid surimi.

Fried foods are susceptible to quality deterioration and heterocyclic amine (HCA) formation during high-temperature processing. Conventional antioxidants have limited efficacy, and research on improving the performance of natural antioxidants through photodynamic modification is insufficient. In this study, gallic acid (GA) was irradiated with 225 nm ultraviolet C (UVC) for 6 h to prepare UVC-modified gallic acid (UVC-GA). The effects of UVC-GA on the quality and cytotoxicity of fried squid surimi were then investigated. Results demonstrated that gallic acid was converted into naphthoquinone,

Engineering molecular rotor-stator ligand architectures on copper nanoclusters for efficient photothermal conversion.

Copper nanoclusters represent a promising yet underdeveloped frontier in materials science. Here, we propose a general and efficient strategy for enhancing photothermal conversion efficiency through the incorporation of rotor-stator ligand architectures onto copper nanocluster surfaces. As a representative example, we design carboxylate ligands functionalized with adamantane groups to stabilize a [Cu36(4-F-PhS)24(AdmCOO)6(PPh3)4H8]2- nanocluster. In this architecture, the adamantane unit functions as a molecular rotor, while the carboxylate group serves as a molecular stator. The engineered na

Pleiotropic roles of elongation factor P in Bacillus subtilis physiology revealed by phenotypic and multi-omics analyses.

UNLABELLED: Elongation factor P (EF-P) is conserved across the three kingdoms and alleviates ribosome stalling at the XPPX motif of a protein. A genome-wide ribosome-stalling atlas was previously created for the ancestral strain NCIB3610. However, reportedly, ribosome-stalling does not always decrease protein levels. To determine changes in protein levels in the efp mutant, we performed a proteomic analysis of the laboratory strain-based efp mutant. To evaluate its effects on translation, the amount of protein per mRNA molecule must be determined. Therefore, we performed the RNA-seq experiment

Temperature-attributable mortality projections under scenarios of climate change for Oslo, Norway.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Climate change and evolving of population dynamics, including ageing and changes in population size, are reshaping temperature-attributable mortality patterns. However, there is limited evidence on the prospective trajectory of heat- and cold-attributable mortality in Oslo, particularly under combined scenarios of global warming and population development. This study aims to project heat- and cold-attributable mortality in Oslo and assess the distinct contributions of each of these drivers, utilising high-resolution data. METHODS: We conducted a two-step approach with time se

Light-Harvesting Photothermal Hotspots Enabled by NIR Scattering-Absorption Coupling.

Efficient near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion is constrained by photon loss from scattering and attenuation in complex media. We present a scattering-absorption coupling strategy that pairs broadband photon scattering with plasmonic absorption to deliver supra-additive heating. Nanodiamonds (ND) multiply scatter and trap NIR photons, elevating local photon density, while neighboring gold nanostars (AuNS) convert the enriched flux into heat with high efficiency. A multi-scale framework links mechanism to outcome: finite-difference time-domain calculations quantify AuNS absorbed-power ga

Extreme heat and physical and mental health: A qualitative study with low-income women in South Texas.

Heat waves in the US are becoming more frequent, longer, and more intense due to climate change. South Texas is especially vulnerable because it is experiencing the highest increases in heat "danger days" nationally and has a high number of residents living in unincorporated neighborhoods known as colonias, which often lack basic infrastructure. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore how extreme heat affects the physical and mental health of Latina women who live in South Texas colonias. Focus groups with 18 women ages 20-70 revealed a cycle of physical and mental health consequen

Supramolecular peptide hydrogel-mediated synergistic antibiotic-photothermal therapy for potent antibacterial applications.

Bacterial infection usually exacerbates inflammation and is one of the important factors impeding wound healing. At present, dressings for treating wound infections often include antibiotics, silver ions, fibers, etc., but their therapeutic efficacy is still limited. To enhance antibiotic effectiveness and overcome drug resistance, developing efficient drug delivery systems is imperative. Herein, we rationally designed a three-component peptide hydrogel Nap-Phe-Phe-Thr-Asp-Asp-Tyr (NapFFTDDY) co-encapsulating the photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) and ciprofloxacin (Cip) to establish a no

No Effect of High-Amylose Maize Starch on Pre- or Postexercise Hydration Status, Thermophysiological Strain, or Exhaustive Exercise Performance During Exertional Heat Stress in Endurance Runners.

High-amylose maize starch (HAMS), containing fermentable resistant starch (RS), is suggested to improve fluid absorption/retention in athletes but lacks supporting evidence and may increase gastrointestinal symptom (GIS) risk. This study investigated the use of HAMS in pre- and postexercise hydration protocols on hydration status and GIS before, during, and after exertional heat stress (EHS), and thermophysiological strain and exhaustive exercise performance during EHS. Ten endurance-trained runners (eight men and two women) completed two trials in randomized order, consuming a HAMS beverage (

A wheat canopy albedo high-throughput phenotyping method and its relationship with canopy architecture and leaf properties.

Heat stress damage leads to yield penalties in many wheat-growing areas. Climate change models predict warmer scenarios and more frequent heat shocks. Consequently, wheat breeders need to develop more productive varieties for warm conditions, and therefore, the identification of heat-tolerance traits is needed. Albedo is an integrative trait of the optical properties of the canopy defined as the ratio of reflected light to total light received. High albedos in warm conditions may help reduce damaging radiation. Despite its potential relevance for heat avoidance, albedo has been little explored

Synthesis and photocatalytic activity of CeO2-NbC-x catalysts for degrading oxytetracycline in aquaculture water bodies.

The aquaculture water body is rich in antibiotics, which has caused great harm to the natural environment. It is urgent to adopt special means to degrade antibiotics from the source and reduce their impact on human production and life. In this study, the CeO2@NbC (CeO2-NbC-x (where x denotes the wt% of NbC)) catalyst was synthesized by the molten salt method, polyacrylamide gel method and heat treatment technology. Multiple characterization methods confirmed that there were no other impurities in the CeO2-NbC-x catalyst, and a special contact was formed between the CeO2 and NbC interfaces. The
