Heat-related illness in athletes.

Heat stroke in athletes is entirely preventable. Exertional heat illness is generally the result of increased heat production and impaired dissipation of heat. It should be treated aggressively to avoid life-threatening complications. The continuum of heat illness includes mild disease (heat edema, heat rash, heat cramps, heat syncope), heat exhaustion, and the most severe form, potentially life-threatening heat stroke. Heat exhaustion typically presents with dizziness, malaise, nausea, and vomiting, or excessive fatigue with accompanying mild temperature elevations. The condition can progress

[Heat waves: health impacts].

During the summer of 2003, record high temperatures were reported across Europe, causing thousands of casualties. Heat waves are sporadic recurrent events, characterised by intense and prolonged heat, associated with excess mortality and morbidity. The most frequent cause of death directly attributable to heat is heat stroke but heat waves are known to cause increases in all-cause mortality, specially circulatory and respiratory mortality. Epidemiological studies demonstrate excess casualties cluster in specific risk groups. The elderly, those with chronic medical conditions and the socially i

Heat-related deaths--United States, 1999-2003.

Heat-related illnesses (e.g., heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat syncope, or heatstroke) can occur when high ambient temperatures overcome the body's natural ability to dissipate heat. Older adults, young children, and persons with chronic medical conditions are particularly susceptible to these illnesses and are at high risk for heat-related mortality. Previous analyses of the risk factors associated with heat-related deaths have been based on the underlying cause entered on the death certificate and have not included decedents for whom hyperthermia was listed as a contributing factor but not

Exertional heat illness and environmental conditions during a single football season in the southeast.

CONTEXT: Recommendations for heat illness prevention provided by sports medicine associations do not always account for sex differences, specific age populations, regional environmental conditions, equipment worn during activity, or the athlete's size or preexisting level of fitness. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the rate of exertional heat illness (EHI) among collegiate football athletes and to monitor environmental conditions during American football practice for a 3-month period. DESIGN: Epidemiologic study in which we reviewed the occurrence rates of EHI and wet bulb globe temperature readings

Heat-related illness.

Heat-related illness represents a continuum of disorders from minor syndromes such as heat cramps, heat syncope, and heat exhaustion to the severely life-threatening disorder known as heat stroke. It represents an important cause of wilderness-related morbidity and mortality.

Exertional heat illness in Air Force basic military trainees.

OBJECTIVE: Exertional heat illnesses (heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat cramps) are a serious problem in military operations. Air Force basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base is a prime example of where exertional heat illnesses can occur. This project was conducted to evaluate the problem o exertional heat illnesses during basic military training a Lackland Air Force Base. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Ambulatory Data System, the Air Force Reportable Event Surveillance System, and a published report in the December 1999 issue of Military Medicine (Drehner, Neuhauser,

Fluid and electrolyte disturbances in heat illness.

Three exercise-related heat illnesses are described in the literature -- heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat syncope, and heat stroke. Of these, only exercise-induced heat stroke, which occurs infrequently, is definitely a heat illness caused by an increased rate of heat production unmatched by adequate heat loss causing progressive heat retention with the body temperature rising to dangerously high levels (> 41 degrees C). The terms heat cramps and heat exhaustion are misleading as neither is caused by an elevated body temperature; nor is there evidence that either is caused by specific flui

Heat illness: on-site diagnosis and cooling.

Heatstroke is a true sports emergency. By recognizing the key signs and symptoms a core body temperature above 40.5 degrees C and mental status changes on-site physicians can begin urgent management of heatstroke. Cooling must begin immediately; ice water immersion is best if practical, but other measures can be effective. Other conditions common in the heat, like 'heat cramps,' 'heat exhaustion,' and 'heat syncope,' are less serious and generally require less drastic measures. Cramps typically respond to sodium replacement, and heat exhaustion and syncope require rest and possibly cooling and

Heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses. The maladies of summer.

The spectrum of heat-related illnesses ranges from simple syncope to life-threatening heatstroke. Persons of all ages can be affected. Heat edema, heat cramps, heat syncope, and heat exhaustion respond readily to simple management techniques. Treatment of heatstroke must include aggressive cooling, adequate fluid and electrolyte repletion, maintenance of adequate cardiovascular performance, and prompt correction of any related or resulting complications.

Heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses.

Preview Victims of high heat and humidity may be young and healthy or old and debilitated. In either case, severe heatstroke may present a life-threatening situation if treatment is delayed. In this article, the authors examine the various therapeutic options, including physical cooling methods and supportive measures. They also describe therapy for the less serious summer ailments of heat edema, heat cramps, and heat syncope.

Hyperthermia: New Thoughts on an Old Problem.

In brief: This article reviews the causes and treatment of the common heat illnesses-heat syncope, heat exhaustion, and exertional heatstroke. The authors discuss the effectiveness of cooling heatstroke victims in ice water vs water that has been cooled to a temperature of 15° C. The latter method is more practical and has been found as effective as cooling with ice water. The authors also present the energy depletion model, which shows the cycle that results in reduced exercise/heat tolerance and significant morbidity and mortality in victims of exercise-induced hyperthermia. This model predi

Heat stroke and related heat stress disorders.

Medical disorders related to environmental heat exposure are exceptionally common in persons who perform hard work in hot climates. They are also common in competitive athletes as well as in persons who participate in casual exercise to maintain health. The important issue of salt and water disturbances consequent to heavy sweating in hot climates is discussed in detail as are mechanisms of potassium deficiency and its implications. The major forms of environmental heat illness including heat syncope, heat cramp, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are presented in detail with relevant clinical e

Heat illness in the athlete.

Heat illness is one of the most common causes of disability in American football and there are frequent deaths caused by heatstroke. A better understanding of the physiology of heatstroke has changed the manner of the approach to heat problems in the past 25 years. Sweating is the way the body dissipates the internal heat produced by muscular exercise. Since sweat is hypotonic, the result of excessive loss of weight through sweating is a water deficit in the body. The clinical disorders resulting from exercise in hot and humid environment are heat cramps, heat syncope, heat exhaustion, and hea
