Effects of cryo-facial mask on running performance in amateur middle-distance runners.

The excess heat accumulated during exercise can lead to stress-induced fatigue, possibly impairing athletic performance. Various precooling techniques have been applied to enhance thermal comfort, reduce perception of effort, and improve endurance. In this randomized crossover study, twelve male amateur middle-distance runners (age: 33.69 ± 5.9 years; body mass: 71.9 ± 4.4 kg; height: 178.4 ± 5.6 cm; V˙O2 peak: 63.3 ± 5.6 mL min-1·kg-1) wore a facial cooling mask before a time-to-exhaustion (TTE) test on a treadmill, under cryostimulation or control conditions. The running performance comprise

The Clinical Profile of Heatstroke Patients Admitted to the Intensive Care Unit: A Case Series From a Tertiary Care Center in New Delhi, India.

Heat-related illnesses include a spectrum of disorders ranging from heat syncope, muscle cramps, and heat exhaustion to heat emergencies such as heatstroke. Severe heatwaves can lead to extremely high environmental temperatures and a spurt of cases of heat-related illnesses and heatstroke. The incidence of such heat-related medical emergencies was much higher in 2024 compared to previous years throughout North and Central India. Here, we are describing a case series of five patients admitted to the intensive care unit of a tertiary care center in New Delhi during the month of June 2024.

Exertional Heat Stroke Survival at the Falmouth Road Race: 180 New Cases With Expanded Analysis.

Rotator cuff pathology is present in nearly half the adult population over the age of 50 years and remains a leading cause of shoulder pain and dysfunction. These musculotendinous injuries may be the result of an acute trauma or chronic degeneration. Clinical examination involves inspection, range of motion, and strength assessment with special testing used to isolate the involved rotator cuff muscles. The classification of these injuries involves identification of tear size, thickness, morphology, and the presence of tendon retraction or muscular atrophy to guide clinical management. Magnetic

The 2024 report of the Lancet Countdown on health and climate change: facing record-breaking threats from delayed action.

UNLABELLED: Despite the initial hope inspired by the 2015 Paris Agreement, the world is now dangerously close to breaching its target of limiting global multiyear mean heating to 1·5°C. Annual mean surface temperature reached a record high of 1·45°C above the pre-industrial baseline in 2023, and new temperature highs were recorded throughout 2024. The resulting climatic extremes are increasingly claiming lives and livelihoods worldwide. The Lancet Countdown: tracking progress on health and climate change was established the same year the Paris Agreement entered into force, to monitor the healt

Diver Underwater Cycling Endurance After Short-Term Warm and Hot Water Acclimation.

INTRODUCTION: It is unclear whether immersion heat acclimation benefits exercise in warm water conditions. This study examined the effects of heat acclimation strategies on heart rate (HR), core temperature, and time to exhaustion (TTE) during cycling exercise in varying warm water conditions. METHODS: Twenty male divers completed this study at the Navy Experimental Diving Unit. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of two 9-day heat acclimation groups. The first group (WARM; n = 10) cycled for 2 hours at 50 W in 34.4 °C water, while the second group (HOT; n = 10) cycled for 1 hour against m

Integrated transcriptome and trajectory analysis of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma identifies putative precancer populations.

The incidence of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) increases with age, and blood involvement portends a worse prognosis. To advance our understanding of the development of CTCL and identify potential therapeutic targets, we performed integrative analyses of paired single-cell RNA and T-cell receptor (TCR) sequencing of peripheral blood CD4+ T cells from patients with CTCL to reveal disease-unifying features. The malignant CD4+ T cells of CTCL showed highly diverse transcriptomic profiles across patients, with most displaying a mature Th2 differentiation and T-cell exhaustion phenotype. TCR-CDR3

TIGIT inhibition and lenalidomide synergistically promote antimyeloma immune responses after stem cell transplantation in mice.

Autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) with subsequent lenalidomide maintenance is standard consolidation therapy for multiple myeloma, and a subset of patients achieve durable progression-free survival that is suggestive of long-term immune control. Nonetheless, most patients ultimately relapse, suggesting immune escape. TIGIT appears to be a potent inhibitor of myeloma-specific immunity and represents a promising new checkpoint target. Here we demonstrate high expression of TIGIT on activated CD8+ T cells in mobilized peripheral blood stem cell grafts from patients with myeloma. To guid

Pulmonary ventilation and gas exchange during prolonged exercise in humans: Influence of dehydration, hyperthermia and sympathoadrenal activity.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of the study? Ventilation increases during prolonged intense exercise, but the impact of dehydration and hyperthermia, with associated blunting of pulmonary circulation, and independent influences of dehydration, hyperthermia and sympathoadrenal discharge on ventilatory and pulmonary gas exchange responses remain unclear. What is the main finding and its importance? Dehydration and hyperthermia led to hyperventilation and compensatory adjustments in pulmonary CO2 and O2 exchange, such that CO2 output increased and O2 uptake remained unchanged despite

Effects of different external cooling placements prior to and during exercise on athletic performance in the heat: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Nowadays, many high-profile international sport events are often held in warm or hot environments, hence, it is inevitable for these elite athletes to be prepared for the challenges from the heat. Owing to internal cooling may cause gastrointestinal discomfort to athletes, external cooling technique seems to be a more applicable method to deal with thermal stress. Central cooling mainly refers to head, face, neck and torso cooling, can help to reduce skin temperature and relieve thermal perception. Peripheral cooling mainly refers to four limbs cooling, can help to mitigate metabol

Improvement in the diagnosis and practices of emergency healthcare providers for heat emergencies after HEAT (heat emergency awareness & treatment) an educational intervention: a multicenter quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of heat emergencies, including heat stroke and heat exhaustion, have increased recently due to climate change. This has affected global health and has become an issue of consideration for human health and well-being. Due to overlapping clinical manifestations with other diseases, and most of these emergencies occurring in an elderly patient, patients with a comorbid condition, or patients on poly medicine, diagnosing and managing them in the emergency department can be challenging. This study assessed whether an educational training on heat emergencies, defined as hea

Cooling cities through urban green infrastructure: a health impact assessment of European cities.

BACKGROUND: High ambient temperatures are associated with many health effects, including premature mortality. The combination of global warming due to climate change and the expansion of the global built environment mean that the intensification of urban heat islands (UHIs) is expected, accompanied by adverse effects on population health. Urban green infrastructure can reduce local temperatures. We aimed to estimate the mortality burden that could be attributed to UHIs and the mortality burden that would be prevented by increasing urban tree coverage in 93 European cities. METHODS: We did a q

Heat flux systems for body core temperature assessment during exercise.

Heat flux systems are increasingly used to assess core body temperature. However, validation of multiple systems is scarce. Therefore, an experiment was performed in which three commercially available heat flux systems (3 M, Medisim and Core) were compared to rectal temperature (Tre). Five females and four males performed exercise in a climate chamber set at 18 °C/50% relative humidity until exhaustion. Exercise duration was 36.3 ± 5.6 min (mean ± standard deviation). Tre in rest was 37.2 ± 0.3 °C. Medisim's-values were lower than Tre (36.9 ± 0.4 °C, p < 0.05); 3 M (37.2 ± 0.1 °C) and Core's (

Excess mortality attributed to heat and cold: a health impact assessment study in 854 cities in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Heat and cold are established environmental risk factors for human health. However, mapping the related health burden is a difficult task due to the complexity of the associations and the differences in vulnerability and demographic distributions. In this study, we did a comprehensive mortality impact assessment due to heat and cold in European urban areas, considering geographical differences and age-specific risks. METHODS: We included urban areas across Europe between Jan 1, 2000, and Dec 12, 2019, using the Urban Audit dataset of Eurostat and adults aged 20 years and older liv
