Distinct risk factors for exertional heat exhaustion in competitive versus recreational amateur golfers: a stratified cross-sectional study.

Although preventing heat illness is critical in golf, risk profiles likely vary by engagement level. This study investigated whether risk factors for exertional heat exhaustion (EHE) differ between competitive and recreational golfers. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study targeting amateur golfers in Japan during the summers of 2024 and 2025. A stratified analysis was performed on competitive (n = 485) and recreational (n = 259) groups using multivariable logistic regression to identify independent risk factors. Although perceived dehydration and loss of appetite were universal r

Dynamic responses in the human methylome to exertional heat exhaustion, heat injury, and heat stroke.

Exertional heat illness encompasses a continuum from heat exhaustion (EHE) to heat stroke (EHS), yet the molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. DNA methylation offers a stable epigenetic signature linking environmental stress to gene regulation and long-term physiological outcomes. We profiled genome-wide DNA methylation in blood from active-duty service members hospitalized for EHE (n = 36), heat injury (EHI; n = 18), or EHS (n = 50). Blood was collected longitudinally and analyzed using the Illumina 850 K array, with normalization and time-course clustering (TCseq) to identify co-reg

Heat Beyond the Kitchen: Embodied Strain, Time Poverty, and the Life-Embedded Nature of Employee Experience in Culinary Labour.

This study examines how employee experience (EX) in professional kitchens is constituted through the interplay of embodied strain, temporal constraints, care responsibilities, and the meanings attached to work. Drawing on an embedded single-case study conducted in the main kitchen of a five-star city hotel in Istanbul, the study is based on in-depth interviews with workers across hierarchical levels. The findings show that physical strain, long and irregular working hours, and non-work care burdens are not experienced as separate challenges, but as mutually reinforcing pressures that extend in

Short-term endurance training in the cold with layered clothing mitigates perceptual strain during exercise in the heat.

PURPOSE: We examined whether short-term endurance training in the cold combined with layered clothing enhances cardiovascular, thermoregulatory, and performance adaptations. METHODS: Sixteen healthy males completed five consecutive days of endurance cycling in the cold (10 °C, 50% relative humidity [rH]) while wearing either thermal layered clothing (WEAR) or light clothing (CON). Before and after training, participants performed a graded exercise test, a time-to-exhaustion test, and a heat stress test (30 min at 35 °C, 50% rH). RESULTS: During training, heart rate, skin temperature, and swe

Heat exhaustion, domestic heat exposure and socioeconomic disparities among older adults: a cross-sectional mediation analysis from Germany.

BACKGROUND: Older adults are particularly vulnerable to the effects of heatwaves and extreme heat due to physiological changes often exacerbated by chronic diseases and decreased mobility. Although cool indoor temperatures can moderate the health consequences of extreme outdoor heat to some extent, it is important to recognize that access to cool indoor temperatures is distributed unequally across population groups. This study aimed to assess the mediating effect of (indoor) domestic heat exposure on the relationship between socioeconomic position and heat exhaustion in older adults. METHODS:

Ketone monoester ingestion and cognitive and physical performance during exercise-heat stress.

BACKGROUND: Sustaining cognitive and physical performance under extreme environmental conditions is critical for special operation forces (SOF). Hyperthermia negatively impacts cognitive function due to reductions in cerebral blood flow, substrate availability, thermal tolerance, and increased cardiovascular strain. While ketone monoester have demonstrated beneficial effects on cognition, their efficacy during exercise-heat stress remains unexplored. METHODS: Seventeen endurance-trained males (age = 23.8 ± 5.2 y; VO2max = 58.6 ± 3.2 ml·kg-1·min-1) completed a randomized, double-blind, counter

Generalized Tetanus in an Unvaccinated 52-Year-Old Male Gardener: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges in a Low-Resource Setting.

Tetanus remains a life-threatening but preventable disease, which continues to manifest in adults lacking sufficient tetanus vaccination and accessibility to tetanus immunoglobulin (TIG). The case discussed is of an unvaccinated 52-year-old Pakistani male patient who developed progressive trismus, difficulty in swallowing, and general spasms following a minor foot wound. The early symptomatology was attributed to psychological stress or heat exhaustion; thus, there was an initial delay in diagnosis. His clinical course was further complicated by the unavailability of TIG, severe autonomic dysf

Proteomic Profiling of Human Sweat Reveals Molecular Adaptations to Heat Acclimatization Induced by Isothermic Conditioning.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged physical exertion in hot and/or humid environments can induce physiological strain and increase the risk of heat exhaustion or exertional heat stroke (EHS). Heat acclimatization (HA) optimizes an individual's ability to tolerate heat and is therefore widely adopted to improve exercise performance in thermally challenging environments. Sweat is a key thermoregulatory indicator reflective of physiological adaptations during HA and hence is regarded as a valuable resource for monitoring HA. However, knowledge of molecular-level changes and adaptations in sweat associated w

Weft-Backed Cooling Fabric for Personal Thermal and Moisture Management.

During intense physical activity or exposure to solar radiation in hot and humid environments, heat continuously accumulates at the body surface and induces excessive sweating, thereby increasing the risks of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke, which severely compromise human thermal and moisture comfort. Consequently, textiles with integrated heat and moisture management capabilities have attracted considerable attention. However, many reported materials still rely on electrospinning, multilayer membrane assembly, or complex postfunctionalization, which may limit scalable fabr

Preventing heat-related illness in people with severe and persistent mental illness: a quality improvement educational intervention.

BACKGROUND: Climate change poses severe health risks to people with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI), particularly from extreme heat events. People living with schizophrenia had three-fold higher mortality during the 2021 heat dome event in British Columbia. Multiple factors increase vulnerability, including thermoregulation impairment from neuroleptic medications and neurobiological changes, cognitive symptoms affecting risk comprehension, social isolation, comorbid physical conditions, housing instability, and barriers to accessing cooling resources due to stigma and poverty. Skin Calorimetry of the Vastus Lateralis During Incremental Exercise: Thermal Analysis and Modeling.

In this study, we examined the thermal response of the vastus lateralis muscle using a skin calorimeter designed for localized measurements. Five healthy young male participants (20-23 years old) performed an incremental test on a cycle ergometer at 20 W·min-1 until exhaustion. The calorimeter's thermostat was maintained at 30 °C. Ambient temperature was 23 ± 1 °C, and relative humidity ranged from 55% to 60%. The measured heat flow was modeled using functions relating mechanical power output to the thermal response. The model included the exercise phase, recovery, and sweat evaporation. The p

Acute kidney injury and liver damage are the most common forms of end organ damage in exertional heat illness in otherwise healthy young adults.

Exertional heat illness (EHI) is an under-recognized cause of emergency department admissions in otherwise healthy young people in athletic and occupational settings. Specifically, the frequency and severity of end-organ damage in EHI, which include exertional heat stroke (EHS), heat injury (HI), and heat exhaustion (HE) require better characterization to optimize triage and patient care. In the present study, we characterized end-organ damage following emergency department admission for EHI in young, otherwise healthy military service members who collapsed during training exercises.
