Trauma and Hyperthermia.

AUDIENCE: Emergency medicine residents and medical students on emergency medicine rotation. INTRODUCTION: Participating in strenuous activities during hot, humid weather places a person at risk for heat emergencies such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. When the environmental temperature is greater than 35° Celsius (95◦ F), the body can no longer radiate heat to the environment. When the humidity is greater than 75%, the body can no longer use evaporation for cooling.1 The hot, humid environment has effectively eliminated both mechanisms to decrease body heat, and the individual is at risk

Effect of sprint interval cycling with blood flow restriction on capillary blood lactate, cognitive function and perceptual response: a randomized controlled trial.

Regular participation in physical activity can slow age-related functional and cognitive decline but many have cited a lack of time and energy as key barriers to exercise adherence. Hence, exercises with lower time commitment may appeal to sedentary individuals or working adults who perform insufficient physical activity. Sprint interval exercise with blood flow restriction (BFR-SIE) is a time-efficient exercise modality that may augment cognitive gains through enhanced metabolic stimulation and cerebrovascular alterations. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effect of BFR-SIE on capillary

Andrographolide Promotes Ferroptosis in Pancreatic Cancer via Targeting and Activating HSP90/GPX4 Ubiquitination.

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma accounts for 90% of pancreatic cancer cases, the deadliest kind. PC patients' poor immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and other responses lead to a generally failed treatment strategy. Thus, understanding molecular processes is essential for creating novel PC therapies. The natural chemical andrographolide (ADG) from Andrographis paniculata shows anticancer properties against various cancer types. The method by which ADG fights pancreatic cancer is unknown. In PC cell lines, ADG inhibited cell proliferation and migration, caused G0/G1 phase arrest, and caused cell death due

Responding to a warming planet: a scoping review of climate change literacy, perceived health impacts, and mental health outcomes among African students.

BACKGROUND: Climate change represents an urgent global health and environmental challenge, with youth in Africa, who account for over 60% of the continent's population, being disproportionately affected due to limited adaptive capacities, inadequate education, and fragile mental health systems. Climate change literacy, defined as the ability to obtain, process, and apply climate-related information, is crucial for fostering awareness, adaptive behaviours, and psychological resilience among students. Simultaneously, growing evidence points to the mental health consequences of climate change, in

Citizen interpreters in crisis response: Social capital, ethical trade-offs, and hybrid quality control in emergency language services-A comparative analysis of volunteer-led practices in COVID-19 pandemic and climate disasters.

This study investigates the dual role of citizen interpreters in addressing emergency language gaps during crises, combining social capital theory and crisis ethics. Through comparative case studies of coronavirus disease 2019 responses in Montreal's multilingual communities and Hurricane Ida relief efforts within Louisiana's Haitian-Cajun networks, this research identifies three core tensions: the paradox of relational proximity, trade-offs between immediacy and accuracy in terminology translation, and challenges in scaling informal volunteer networks. The study introduces a hybrid quality co

Can Body Mass Index Values and/or Player Position be Viable Predictors for Exertional Heat Illness in American Football Players?

BACKGROUND: Exertional heat illnesses (EHIs) affect thousands of high school athletes each year. Although there are clear risk patterns for fatal EHIs based on player characteristics, there is less information on these associations for nonfatal EHIs. HYPOTHESIS: Prediction of nonfatal EHI risk in American high school football participants can be determined using commonly available data on body mass index (BMI) values and/or player position. STUDY DESIGN: Epidemiological study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3. METHODS: Participants from 22 high schools in the state of Georgia in the United State

Epidemiological characteristics of heat-related illness: a nationwide study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Heat-related illness (HRI) is expected to occur more frequently and become a prominent issue worldwide in the context of global warming and climate change. Previous epidemiological studies of HRI were generally limited to selected populations or specific settings. The objective of this study was to characterize the epidemiological characteristics of HRI in a general population at the national level to fill the data gaps. METHODS: Using the National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified all HRI patients in Taiwan between 2000 and 2018. We described the epidemiological c

Thermal stress indication for heat-related illnesses by climate change in Nigeria using multivariate analysis.

Biometeorology typifies climate change threats with indices such as the thermal stress index (TSI) for heat-related illnesses. The study aimed to evaluate the actual TSI (which has five categories: TSI < 27 (safe), 27 < TSI < 32 (heat fatigue), 32 < TSI < 41 (sunstroke and heat exhaustion), 41 < TSI < 54 (sunstroke and heat cramps), and TSI > 54 (sunstroke, heat stroke and heat confusion, or delirium) across four rain-fed provinces (Markudi in Benue state, Benin in Edo state, Minna in Niger state and Ondo in Ondo state) using 32-year (1987-2018) monthly temperature and relative humidity data o

Associations Between Temperature and Location of Injury or Condition Among Heat-Related Emergency Department Visits.

High ambient temperature poses significant health risk globally. However, the relative importance of different exposure pathways leading to health risks remains unclear. For 9 US states during 2016-2018, ED visit records for heat exhaustion and heat stroke (HEAT), fluid and electrolyte imbalance (FEI), volume depletion (VD), and acute kidney injury (AKI) were identified via diagnosis codes. Co-diagnosed Y92 subcodes (Y codes) were used to categorize the patient's location at the time of injury or condition. Logistic regressions were used to estimate nonlinear associations between same-day temp

Cervical Vessels Color Doppler Ultrasound Findings in Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Comparative Analytical Study.

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis is a common complication in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), which is often associated with immunosuppressive therapies including steroids, azathioprine, and biologics such as infliximab. Although CMV infections related to upadacitinib, a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor, have been reported, they typically occur after prolonged use. Consequently, early onset CMV colitis following the initiation of JAK inhibitors has not been extensively recognised. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 68-year-old Japanese woman with refractory UC who developed CMV

Supplementation with Live and Heat-Treated Lacticaseibacillus paracasei NB23 Enhances Endurance and Attenuates Exercise-Induced Fatigue in Mice.

Background: Exercise-induced fatigue arises primarily from energy substrate depletion and the accumulation of metabolites such as lactate and ammonia, which impair performance and delay recovery. Emerging evidence implicates gut microbiota modulation-particularly via probiotics-as a means to optimize host energy metabolism and accelerate clearance of fatigue-associated by-products. Objective: This study aimed to determine whether live or heat-inactivated Lacticaseibacillus paracasei NB23 can enhance exercise endurance and attenuate fatigue biomarkers in a murine model. Methods: Forty male Inst

Clinical and molecular features of acquired resistance to immunotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer.

Although immunotherapy with PD-(L)1 blockade is routine for lung cancer, little is known about acquired resistance. Among 1,201 patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with PD-(L)1 blockade, acquired resistance is common, occurring in >60% of initial responders. Acquired resistance shows differential expression of inflammation and interferon (IFN) signaling. Relapsed tumors can be separated by upregulated or stable expression of IFNγ response genes. Upregulation of IFNγ response genes is associated with putative routes of resistance characterized by signatures of persistent IF
