Impacts of Climate Change and Heat Stress on Farmworkers' Health: A Scoping Review.

Due to the continuous rise of global temperatures and heatwaves worldwide as a result of climate change, concerns for the health and safety of working populations have increased. Workers in the food production chain, particularly farmworkers, are especially vulnerable to heat stress due to the strenuous nature of their work, which is performed primarily outdoors under poor working conditions. At the cross-section of climate change and farmworkers' health, a scoping review was undertaken to summarize the existing knowledge regarding the health impacts associated with climate change and heat str

Understanding Farmworker Fluid Intake Using Intersectionality Theory.

In the United States, Latino farmworkers are disproportionately at risk for death from heat-related illnesses. To elicit Latino farmworker perceptions on their fluid intake and heat stress, a qualitative descriptive, community-informed research study was conducted in eastern North Carolina. A total of 28 Mexican farmworkers participated in one of 4 focus groups. Using content analysis and guided by Intersectionality theory, themes and subthemes were identified. The first theme was Absence of Protection, represented by 2 subthemes: (1a) Intense Climate Considerations; and (1b) Workplace Exploit

Structural snapshots of the mechanism of TRPV2 channel activation by small-molecule agonists.

Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are polymodal sensors that play critical roles in various physiological processes in living organisms. These cation-permeable channels respond to a variety of physical and chemical stimuli, including cold and hot temperatures, acidic pH, and mechanical stress, often determining a sensory frontier of defense against hostile environments. Vanilloid (V) subfamily is the most studied category of TRP channels that includes six closely related members: highly calcium-selective TRPV5-6 and non-selective TRPV1-4. A remarkable feature of TRPV1-4 is their abil

Fluid Intake and Hydration Status Among North Carolina Farmworkers: A Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Agricultural workers are disproportionately at risk for heat-related morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to explore how sociocultural and occupational factors, and environmental heat stress influenced fluid intake and hydration status among Latino farmworkers working in eastern North Carolina. METHODS: A community-informed, mixed methods research study was conducted in partnership with staff at a federally qualified health center. In summer 2020, we recruited Latino farmworkers at migrant camps. Twenty-eight male, migrant farmworkers participated in focus group

Symposium review: Environmental effects on mammary immunity and health.

Environmental effects on pathogen abundance and access are precursors to mastitis. Indeed, high heat and humidity, and unsanitary housing and equipment, are associated with greater pathogen load and exposure. Although less is known about effects of environment on a cow's ability to resist infection, several indicators suggest that it can affect pathogen responses. Mastitis incidence and bulk tank somatic cell count vary with season, typically peaking in summer. Recent controlled studies have revealed that heat stress exposure results in changes in the microbiome of the cow and her environment,

Hyperthermia and Serotonin: The Quest for a "Better Cyproheptadine".

Fine temperature control is essential in homeothermic animals. Both hyper- and hypothermia can have deleterious effects. Multiple, efficient and partly redundant mechanisms of adjusting the body temperature to the value set by the internal thermostat exist. The neural circuitry of temperature control and the neurotransmitters involved are reviewed. The GABAergic inhibitory output from the brain thermostat in the preoptic area POA to subaltern neural circuitry of temperature control (Nucleus Raphe Dorsalis and Nucleus Raphe Pallidus) is a function of the balance between the (opposite) effects m

Type I diabetes suppresses intracellular calcium ion increase normally evoked by heat stress in rat skeletal muscle.

Heat stress, via its effects on muscle intracellular Ca2+ concentrations ([Ca2+]i), has been invoked as a putative therapeutic countermeasure to type 1 diabetes-induced muscle atrophy. Using a circulation- and neurally intact in vivo muscle preparation, we tested the hypothesis that impaired muscle Ca2+ homeostasis in type 1 diabetic rats is due to attenuated heat stress tolerance mediated via transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1). Male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to one of the following four groups: 1) healthy control 30°C (CONT 30°C); 2) CONT 40°C; 3) diabetes 30°C (DIA 30°

Theoretical evaluation of enhanced gold nanoparticle delivery to PC3 tumors due to increased hydraulic conductivity or recovered lymphatic function after mild whole body hyperthermia.

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of hyperthermia-induced improvement of hydraulic conductivity and lymphatic function on both tumoral IFP reduction and nanoparticle delivery to PC3 tumors. We developed a theoretical model for nanoparticle transport in a tumor incorporating Starling's law, Darcy's law, transient convection, and diffusion of chemical species in porous media, and nanoparticle accumulation in tumors. Results have shown that both mechanisms were effective to decrease the IFP at the tumor center from 1600 Pa in the control without heating to 800 Pa in tumors

Alzheimer's disease as a chronic maladaptive polyamine stress response.

Polyamines are nitrogen-rich polycationic ubiquitous bioactive molecules with diverse evolutionary-conserved functions. Their activity interferes with numerous genes' expression resulting in cell proliferation and signaling modulation. The intracellular levels of polyamines are precisely controlled by an evolutionary-conserved machinery. Their transient synthesis is induced by heat stress, radiation, and other traumatic stimuli in a process termed the polyamine stress response (PSR). Notably, polyamine levels decline gradually with age; and external supplementation improves lifespan in model o

UCP1 and TRPM8 Expression in the Brown Fat Did Not Affect the Restriction of Menthol-Induced Hyperthermia by Estradiol in Ovariectomized Rats.

Estradiol (E2) modulates the central and peripheral thermoregulatory responses to cold. Menthol is an agonist of transient receptor potential melastatin type 8 (TRPM8), which is a peripheral cold receptor. E2 suppresses menthol-induced elevation of body temperature (Tb) in ovariectomized rats, but the mechanism is unknown. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of E2 on uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), a thermogenic gene, and TRPM8 mRNA levels in ovariectomized rats applied menthol. A silastic tube was implanted in ovariectomized rats with and without E2 underneath the dorsal sk

Protective Effects of Fisetin in the Mice Induced by Long-Term Scrotal Hyperthermia.

Exposure to heat in the male reproductive system can lead to transient periods of partial or complete infertility. The current study aimed to examine the beneficial effects of  Fisetin against spermatogenic disorders in mice affected by long-term scrotal hyperthermia. For this purpose, hyperthermia was induced daily by exposure to the temperature of 43 °C for 20 min for 5 weeks. Except for the Healthy group, six other groups were exposed to heat stress: two treated groups including Preventive and Curative which received oral administration of fisetin (10 mg/kg/day) starting immediately before

Tokishakuyakusan ameliorates lowered body temperature after immersion in cold water through the early recovery of blood flow in rats.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: 'Cold feeling' is a subjective feeling of unusual coldness that aggravates fatigue, stiffness, and other symptoms, thereby reducing quality of life. Tokishakuyakusan (TSS) is a Kampo medicine reported to improve cold feeling and is used to treat symptoms aggravated by cold feeling. However, the mechanism of action of TSS is unclear. Cold feeling may involve reduced blood flow and subsequent inhibition of heat transport. Therefore, elucidating the effects of TSS on blood flow is one of the most important research topics for clarifying the mechanism of action of T

Deficiency of TRPM2 leads to embryonic neurogenesis defects in hyperthermia.

Temperature homeostasis is critical for fetal development. The heat sensor protein TRPM2 (transient receptor potential channel M2) plays crucial roles in the heat response, but its function and specific mechanism in brain development remain largely unclear. Here, we observe that TRPM2 is expressed in neural stem cells. In hyperthermia, TRPM2 knockdown and knockout reduce the proliferation of neural progenitor cells (NPCs) and, accordingly, increase premature cortical neuron differentiation. In terms of the mechanism, TRPM2 regulates neural progenitor self-renewal by targeting SP5 (specificity

Hyperthermia induced by transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) antagonists in human clinical trials: Insights from mathematical modeling and meta-analysis.

Antagonists of the transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) channel alter body temperature (Tb) in laboratory animals and humans: most cause hyperthermia; some produce hypothermia; and yet others have no effect. TRPV1 can be activated by capsaicin (CAP), protons (low pH), and heat. First-generation (polymodal) TRPV1 antagonists potently block all three TRPV1 activation modes. Second-generation (mode-selective) TRPV1 antagonists potently block channel activation by CAP, but exert different effects (e.g., potentiation, no effect, or low-potency inhibition) in the proton mode, heat mode,

When Should a Heat-Tolerance Test Be Scheduled After Clinical Recovery From an Exertional Heat Illness?

OBJECTIVE: Researchers have produced a hypothesis of transient heat intolerance (HI) after exertional heat stroke (EHS). Based on this hypothesis, heat-tolerance testing (HTT) has been postponed until weeks 6 to 8 after EHS and other types of exertional heat illness (EHI). We compared the HTT results of participants after either EHS or other EHI who were tested earlier (≤6-week group) versus those who were tested later (>6-week group) to verify the hypothesis. DESIGN: Cohort study. SETTING: Data obtained from records of military athletes who experienced EHS or EHI. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICI
