Heat-Related Illness in Midwestern Hispanic Farmworkers: A Descriptive Analysis of Hydration Status and Reported Symptoms.

Heat-related illness (HRI) is a largely undocumented phenomenon in Midwestern Hispanic migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the United States. Frequently, the physiological burden of crop production is overlooked while workers are in the fields. We completed a mixed-methods study using a cross-sectional survey among migrant and seasonal farmworkers about their experience with HRI symptoms ( N = 148) and conducted an intensive surveillance on a smaller group of workers ( N = 20) in field trials ( N = 57 trials) using a chest-strapped multi-parameter monitoring wearable sensor (MPMWS) that measur

Is Heat Intolerance State or Trait?

The existing literature suggests two standpoints in defining heat intolerance, which are heat tolerance as state or trait. The former bases its case in the plasticity of human physiology, where one may gain or lose the adaptations associated with heat acclimatization and the ability to tolerate heat is considered transient. This phenomenon is exemplified in the recovery process of exertional heat stroke (EHS) patients in that victims of EHS are able to eventually regain heat tolerance and return to activity without recurrent episodes of EHS. On the other hand, an increasing number of reports i

Heart rate variability dynamics during treatment for exertional heat strain when immediate response is not possible.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Does a delay in cold water immersion treatment affect the cardiac autonomic control of exertionally heat-strained individuals? What is the main finding and its importance? Cold water immersion is effective for treating exertionally heat-strained individuals even when treatment is commenced with a significant delay. However, that treatment delay leads to only partial/transient restoration of cardiac autonomic control. Therefore, we recommend that exertional heatstroke patients are continuously monitored for several hours even after core

Heat Stress Perception among Native and Migrant Workers in Italian Industries-Case Studies from the Construction and Agricultural Sectors.

Climate change will increase the frequency and severity of hazard events such as heat waves, with important effects in several European regions. It is of importance to consider overall effects as well as specific impact on vulnerable population groups such as outdoor workers. The agricultural and construction sectors represent two strategic occupational fields that in relatively recent years involve an increasing number of migrant workers, and therefore require a better management of cultural aspects, that may interact with and impact on heat-related health risk. For this reason, the present s

Impact of different temperature stimuli on the expression of myosin heavy chain isoforms during recovery from bupivacaine-induced muscle injury in rats.

Limited information exists regarding the impact of different temperature stimuli on myosin heavy chain (MyHC) expression in skeletal muscle during recovery from injury. Therefore, this experiment investigated the impact of both cold and heat exposure on the MyHC isoform profile in the rat soleus during recovery from injury. Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control, bupivacaine-injected (BPVC), BPVC with icing, and BPVC with heat stress groups. Muscle injury was induced by intramuscular injection of bupivacaine into soleus muscles of male Wistar rats. Icing treatment (0°C for 20 min)

Reassessment of temperature-humidity index for measuring heat stress in crossbred dairy cattle of a sub-tropical region.

The temperature-humidity index (THI) has been extensively applied for assessing heat stress in moderate to hot conditions in dairy cattle. However, there exist wide variation between researchers in defining an appropriate range of THI values for denoting different levels of stress. The present study was aimed to reassess previously described heat stress indicators of dairy cattle of sub-tropical region of India. From comparative evaluation of meteorological data over previous four years (2014-2017) the period of year when high THI prevailed in the region was determined. Accordingly, the time p

Heat Stress Impacts on Cardiac Mortality in Nepali Migrant Workers in Qatar.

BACKGROUND: Qatar is a major destination country for Nepali migrant workers (NMWs; main age range 25-35 years) in the construction trade. These 120,000+ NMWs are exposed to various occupational hazards, including excessive heat, and 3-4 workers die each week. Our study aimed to show whether heat exposure caused deaths. METHODS: The worker population and mortality data of NMWs were retrieved from government institutions in Nepal. Heat exposure was assessed by monthly estimates of daily wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), for in-shade conditions, from data collected at the Doha weather station f

HO-1 reduces heat stress-induced apoptosis in bovine granulosa cells by suppressing oxidative stress.

Heat stress negatively affects reproduction in cattle by disrupting the normal function of ovarian granulosa cells (GCs), ultimately leading to oxidative damage and cell death via apoptosis. Heme oxygenase-1(HO-1) is a member of the heat shock protein family, which are associated with cellular antioxidant defenses and anti-apoptotic functions. Recent studies demonstrated that HO-1 is upregulated in heat-stressed cells. In the present study, we investigated the expression of HO-1 in bovine GCs transiently exposed to heat stress and characterized the expression and activity of key oxidative stre

Transient hyperthermia during oxygenated rewarming of isolated rat livers.

Pretransplant machine perfusion of donor grafts has gained clinical appreciation to improve graft function and survival after transplantation. This study was aimed as pilot investigation to evaluate the additive potential of a transient ex vivo heat shock treatment of the isolated organ during machine perfusion to further protect the graft from subsequent reperfusion injury. Rat livers were retrieved after 20 min of cardiac arrest and preserved for 18 h by cold storage in HTK solution. Prior to reperfusion, livers were subjected to 2 h of reconditioning machine perfusion with gradual increase

Proteomics fingerprints of systemic mechanisms of adaptation to bile in Lactobacillus fermentum.

Lactobacillus fermentum is a natural resident of the human GIT and is used as a probiotic. A unique property of L. fermentum is its ability to tolerate, colonize, and survive in the harsh conditions of bile, which facilitates transient colonization of the host colon. In the current study, we investigated the key mechanisms of action involved in bacterial survival in the presence of bile, using high-resolution mass spectrometry. A total of 1071 proteins were identified, among which 378 were up-regulated and 368 down-regulated by ≥2-fold (t-test, p < .05). Differentially regulated proteins compr

PARPs and PAR as novel pharmacological targets for the treatment of stress granule-associated disorders.

Among the post-translational modifications, ADP-ribosylation has been for long time the least integrated in the scheme of the structural protein modifications affecting physiological functions. In spite of the original findings on bacterial-dependent ADP-ribosylation catalysed by toxins such as cholera and pertussis toxin, only with the discovery of the poly-ADP-ribosyl polymerase (PARP) family the field has finally expanded and the role of ADP-ribosylation has been recognised in both physiological and pathological processes, including cancer, infectious and neurodegenerative diseases. This is

Context-Dependent and Disease-Specific Diversity in Protein Interactions within Stress Granules.

Stress granules (SGs) are transient ribonucleoprotein (RNP) aggregates that form during cellular stress and are increasingly implicated in human neurodegeneration. To study the proteome and compositional diversity of SGs in different cell types and in the context of neurodegeneration-linked mutations, we used ascorbate peroxidase (APEX) proximity labeling, mass spectrometry, and immunofluorescence to identify ∼150 previously unknown human SG components. A highly integrated, pre-existing SG protein interaction network in unstressed cells facilitates rapid coalescence into larger SGs. Approximat

GSK2193874 treatment at heatstroke onset reduced cell apoptosis in heatstroke mice.

Heatstroke is still a potentially fatal threat during summer heat waves, despite improved prevention and treatment. It is reported that the transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) inhibitor may protect septicemia mice. Many aspects of heatstroke have been defined, from the sepsis-mimic inflammatory response to hyperthermia. Hence, TRPV4 may be a therapeutic target for heatstroke. The results in murine models of heatstroke verified that GSK2193874, as a selected TRPV4 inhibitor, was injected at heatstroke onset, and then reduced the reduction of core temperature, the death rate, wet/dry

"I Think the Temperature was 110 Degrees!": Work Safety Discussions Among Hispanic Farmworkers.

Heat-related illness (HRI) among migrant and seasonal farmworkers is an occupational risk addressed through varying mitigation strategies by individual workers and supervisors. The purpose of this pilot study was to describe farmworkers' experience with HRI prevention strategies and assess HRI information seeking preferences, especially the feasibility of using mobile phone apps to access this information. Five focus groups were administered to Hispanic farmworkers in South Carolina. Questions included the following topics: health information seeking preferences; farmworkers' perceptions of oc

In Vivo Hyperthermic Stress Model: An Easy Tool to Study the Effects of Oxidative Stress on Neuronal Tau Functionality in Mouse Brain.

Oxidative damage is an early event in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer disease. To increase oxidative stress in AD-related mouse models is essential to study early mechanisms involved in the physiopathology of these diseases. In this chapter, we describe an experimental mouse model of transient and acute hyperthermic stress to induce in vivo an increase of oxidative stress in the brain of any kind of wild-type or transgenic mouse.

Yeast Short-Lived Actin-Associated Protein Forms a Metastable Prion in Response to Thermal Stress.

Self-perpetuating ordered protein aggregates (amyloids and prions) are associated with a variety of neurodegenerative disorders. Although environmental agents have been linked to certain amyloid diseases, the molecular basis of their action remains unclear. We have employed endogenous yeast prions as a model system to study environmental control of amyloid formation. A short-lived actin-associated yeast protein Lsb2 can trigger prion formation by other proteins in a mode regulated by the cytoskeleton and ubiquitin-dependent processes. Here, we show that such a heterologous prion induction is d
