Cell phone radiation exposure and its biological interaction is the present concern of debate. Present study aimed to investigate the effect of 3G cell phone exposure with computer controlled 2-D stepper motor on 45-day-old male Wistar rat brain. Animals were exposed for 2 h a day for 60 days by using mobile phone with angular movement up to zero to 30°. The variation of the motor is restricted to 90° with respect to the horizontal plane, moving at a pre-determined rate of 2° per minute. Immediately after 60 days of exposure, animals were scarified and numbers of parameters (DNA double-strand

Heat and immune stress can affect athletes in a wide range of sports and environmental conditions. The classical thermoregulatory model of heat stress has been well characterized, as has a wide range of practical strategies largely centered on cooling and heat-acclimation training. In the last decade evidence has emerged of an inflammatory pathway that can also contribute to heat stress. Studies are now addressing the complex and dynamic interplay between hyperthermia, the coagulation cascade, and a systemic inflammatory response occurring after transient damage to the gastrointestinal tract.

Tungsten has been chosen as the main candidate for plasma facing components (PFCs) due to its superior properties under extreme operating conditions in future nuclear fusion reactors such as ITER. One of the serious issues for PFCs is the high heat load during transient events such as ELMs and disruption in the reactor. Recrystallization and grain size growth in PFC materials caused by transients are undesirable changes in the material, since the isotropic microstructure developed after recrystallization exhibits a higher ductile-to-brittle transition temperature which increases with the grain

Schizophrenia (SZ) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are highly heritable neuropsychiatric disorders, although environmental factors, such as maternal immune activation (MIA), play a role as well. Cytokines mediate the effects of MIA on neurogenesis and behavior in animal models. However, MIA stimulators can also induce a febrile reaction, which could have independent effects on neurogenesis through heat shock (HS)-regulated cellular stress pathways. However, this has not been well-studied. To help understand the role of fever in MIA, we used a recently described model of human brain develop

We herein report the rare case of a 56-year-old man who suffered from heat stroke. Although he was in a coma with convulsions on arrival and developed multiorgan failure, he recovered after two weeks of successful treatments. Hyperintense signals on the right temporoparietooccipital cortex, which disappeared within one week, were demonstrated on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance images. A diagnosis of transient cortical injury caused by heat stroke was suggested. Although the cerebellum is most susceptible to lesion formation, the mechanisms underlying heat stroke are multifactorial and ma

Although the health risk to farmworkers of working in hot conditions is recognized, potential for excessive heat exposure in housing affecting rest and recovery has been ignored. We assessed heat index in common and sleeping rooms in 170 North Carolina farmworker camps across a summer and examined associations with time of summer and air conditioning use. We recorded dangerous heat indexes in most rooms, regardless of time or air conditioning. Policies to reduce heat indexes in farmworker housing should be developed.

Phytocystatins are proteinaceous inhibitors of cysteine proteases. They have been implicated in the regulation of plant protein turnover and in defense against pathogens and insects. Here, we have characterized an Arabidopsis phytocystatin family gene, Arabidopsis thaliana phytocystatin 4 (AtCYS4). AtCYS4 was induced by heat stress. The heat shock tolerance of AtCYS4-overexpressing transgenic plants was greater than that of wild-type and cys4 knock-down plants, as measured by fresh weight and root length. Although no heat shock elements were identified in the 5'-flanking region of the AtCYS4 g

Oxidative stress aggravates brain injury following ischemia. The glutathione (GSH) system plays a pivotal role in combating oxidative stress in various cell types. To determine whether oral GSH administration elicits anti-oxidative effects, we assessed its potential neuroprotective effects in transient bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) mice. In naïve mice, acute oral administration of GSH significantly increased GSH levels by 1h in the cortex and hippocampus. Eleven days after BCCAO, untreated mice showed significantly decreased GSH levels and an inverse elevation of glutathion

The TRP family of cation-permeable channels owes its name to a Drosophila TRP mutant with impaired vision due to transient rather than sustained receptor potential. Mammalian TRP channels can be grouped into 6 subfamilies, including TRPC, TRPM, TRPV, TRPA, TRPP and TRPML and a number of TRP family members have been identified in the vasculature. TRP channels play an important functional role in the vasculature as mediators of cation influx across the plasma membrane, thus contributing to a large number of processes such as vascular smooth muscle contraction and vascular pressure or the respons

Heat stroke (HS) induces a rapid elevation in a number of circulating cytokines. This is often attributed to the stimulatory effects of endotoxin, released from damaged intestine, on immune cells. However, parenchymal cells also produce cytokines, and skeletal muscle, comprising a large proportion of body mass, is thought to participate. We tested the hypothesis that skeletal muscle exhibits a cytokine response to HS that parallels the systemic response in conscious mice heated to a core temperature of 42.4°C (TcMax). Diaphragm and hindlimb muscles showed a rapid rise in interleukin-6 (IL-6) a

Important conceptual changes concerning human thermoregulation have occurred in the last decade. While the hypothalamus maintains its central role in sensing core temperature and providing connectivity to orchestrate heat loss and cold defense autonomic neuronal mechanisms, it is now regarded as one of multiple, independent thermoeffector pathways that control core body temperature. Recent research in primate central and peripheral thermosensitivity has emphasized the importance of temperature-activated transient receptor potential (TRP) channels and afferent neuronal pathways from peripheral

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) might account for the cognitive deficits associated with vascular cognitive impairment, but the mechanisms of hypoperfusion insulting to the cognition remain obscure. In the present study, Wistar rats underwent permanent occlusion of bilateral common carotid arteries to induce CCH. 2D-DIGE combined with MALDI-TOF MS was applied to determine the proteins that were differentially expressed in synaptosomes of prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. ATPsynβ, NDUFS1, UQCRC1 and Hsp70 were elevated both in synaptosomes of cortex and hippocampus at week 2 after operati

Heat shock proteins (Hsp) play critical roles in the body's self-defense under a variety of stresses, including heat shock, oxidative stress, radiation, and wounds, through the regulation of folding and functions of relevant cellular proteins. Exercise increases the levels of Hsp through elevated temperature, hormones, calcium fluxes, reactive oxygen species (ROS), or mechanical deformation of tissues. Isotonic contractions and endurance- type activities tend to increase Hsp60 and Hsp70. Eccentric muscle contractions lead to phosphorylation and translocation of Hsp25/27. Exercise-induced trans

INTRODUCTION: Exertional heat stroke (EHS) is a major concern in military trainees performing intense physical exercise, with substantial morbidity rates. Prehospital diagnosis of EHS is essentially clinical. Thus, soldiers, command personnel, and medical staff are taught to recognize this injury and immediately begin aggressive treatment to prevent further deterioration.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: During 2007, 5 otherwise healthy Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers were diagnosed with EHS while performing strenuous exercise. They were treated vigorously according to the IDF EHS-treatment protoc

Exercise-associated collapse (EAC) commonly occurs after the completion of endurance running events. EAC is a collapse in conscious athletes who are unable to stand or walk unaided as a result of light headedness, faintness and dizziness or syncope causing a collapse that occurs after completion of an exertional event. Although EAC is perhaps the most common aetiology confronted by the medical provider attending to collapsed athletes in a finish-line tent, providers must first maintain vigilance for other potential life-threatening aetiologies that cause collapse, such as cardiac arrest, exert

Cerebral ischemia is a major cause of death and long-term disability worldwide. Ischemic penumbra, the electrically silent but metabolically viable perifocal brain tissue, is the target for the much elusive stroke therapy. To characterize the molecular events of the dynamic penumbra, we applied an iTRAQ-based shotgun proteomic approach in an in vitro neuronal model, using the rat B104 neuroblastoma cell line. Various functional and cytometric assays were performed to establish the relevant time-point and conditions for ischemia to recapitulate the pathology of the penumbra. Two replicate iTRAQ

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the acute cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses to repeated 70 degrees head-up tilts (HUT) performed following exercise-induced hyperthermia.
METHODS: Eight male subjects underwent intermittent episodes of 70 degrees HUT in either a non-exercise/ non-heat stress state (NH) or an exercise-induced hyperthermic state (EIH). Subjects remained supine for 30 min in a thermoneutral environment (22 degrees C) and were subsequently exposed to three successive 6-min 70 degrees head-up tilts (HUT1, HUT2, HUT3), each separated by 10 min of supine resting.
